A Fight Between Brothers

1420 Words
The next morning, Kin woke up like nothing happened yesterday, he showered, dressed up, made breakfast, and went to wake Lucas up, who was still deeply asleep, with an open mouth. Kin tried to wake him up gently, but Lucas didn't budge, so he put down the tray, that had bread, water and a painkiller in it, and took the blanket away, that still didn't wake him up and he just crawled up like a baby, Kin then tried shaking him and shouting at him to wake up, that didn't work either, which got him worried and when he was about to call an ambulance, Lucas opened one eye and asked if he can massage his head. Kin sighed and did just that, he sat on the bed, Lucas put his head on his (Kin's) lap and enjoyed the massage. Ten minutes later, Kin felt his phone vibrate and remembered that he had a job, that he ditched yesterday for Leonard and he couldn't do that again. "You need to get up, I have to go." Kin moved Lucas's off of his lap, and got up to get ready for work. He already skipped the day before, if he continues like this, he would eventually lose his job, a company doesn’t function on its own. "Go where?" Lucas asked curiously. "My job." Kin said and just then he remembered that he told neither Lucas and Layla about getting the job, he completely forgot because one, they weren't that supportive, two, they both weren't in the city. And maybe those were just excused he told himself and planned on telling Lucas days after, or maybe he was too excited about getting a job and didn't consider telling Layla or Lucas, for the reason that he doesn't see them as a family but as book characters that he needed to look after. "You got a job? Ow, my head." Lucas got up too fast and the headache hit hard. "Here." Kin handed him the painkiller and water. “And yes, I got the job, I just forgot to tell you." Kin said as Lucas was drinking the water; he angrily put it down and looked at Kin with disappointment. "You forgot? That's your excuse? How did you forget to tell your only brother about the first you got? We could have celebrated, I would have congratulated you." Lucas was deeply hurt because of this; Kin always told him everything, be it from the groceries he got, a person who confessed to him, a grade he got, talking to someone and anything really, and to hide something like having a job from him was like a stab to the heart for him; he didn't expect it from Kin, the person who once told him about the amount of toilet paper he used. Lucas opposed it, yes, but he still wanted Kin to tell him about it, because he would at least be aware why his brother had a different schedule than usual, and he would even fake being happy for him. "Would you? Because when I told you I wanted to get a job, you were so against it that I thought you were going to lock me up in the house if I did get a job." Kin wasn't ready to admit his mistake, for him, he did nothing wrong, he simply forgot, he didn't find the time to tell Lucas, that was it, Lucas didn't need to make such a big deal about it. "I would never do that." That was a lie. "I am happy for you and I would have been happier if you told me by yourself instead of me finding out in this way." Lucas would have probably pretended to be him because he wouldn't see him much, but he would have at least known properly, instead of the middle of him going through a hangover. "I am sorry, okay? I didn't think it would hurt you this much." Kin said and that just made the knife go deeper in Lucas's chest and he couldn't stay seated anymore and got up. "You are becoming someone else and I hate it." Lucas said before he left the room and slammed the door behind him. "Lucas! Lucas, wait! Damn it!" Kin tried to follow him but Lucas left the house, in his pajamas and with no phone, before he could catch up to him, and Kin didn't even have a car to follow him with, and Layla's car was in repair, plus he had no clue where he could go, he didn't have the number of any of his friends, but maybe it was for the best, they both needed some distance for now. And with that, Kin put the breakfast he prepared in the fridge and left the house, and went to the company in a taxi, where a load of work was waiting for him because he skipped one day; now imagine with me, Kin was the CEO of one company and he had to keep working until 11 pm because he skipped a day, what could have happened to Leonard, who owned several companies and was the holder of all of them, well the answer was easy, he couldn't leave his office for three days and only had a one hour break, that he could eat in, other than that, he was glued to documents or something similar. In those three days, Kin was also working the whole day and could only come back home at 8 pm, to an empty home, because Lucas hadn't come back since he left and he was over that by the fourth day, he wanted to give him space but that doesn't mean, he was going to let him disappear, so on a Saturday evening, Kin got in Layla's car and went around the city looking for Lucas, he started with the company he was working at, no news, he was working from distance and no one knew where he was, not his coworkers, not his office friends, no one; next, he visited his favorite park, he wasn't there, the cinema, the theatre, his favorite restaurant and when he couldn't find him anywhere, his last resolution was to go to the road Kin was killed in, the last place Lucas saw the old Kin in, that was the only place he could think of and he was right. He parked the car in front of the location their car was stopped at and started walking around, to where Lucas and Layla ran to that night, he walked for around fifteen minutes, until he found someone sitting with his back against a tree, he approached the person and he had Lucas's pajama on, so he was sure he found him. Lucas had his head buried in his lap and was busy thinking about the old days, that he didn't notice Kin noticing, he only did notice when he heard a soft sorry from him. "Was it this that changed you?" Lucas asked without taking his head off his lap. He was thinking about that day, the day Kin survived or did he? Or did the one he knew die in that day? "If you are talking about almost dying then yes, it made appreciate life more." Kin didn't know how to explain to Lucas that he wasn't the same person he knew for more than ten years, actually, he did, but he wasn't willing to tell him the truth, he wasn't ready and he would probably never be ready. "Will you ever go back to your old self?" Lucas didn't like this version of his brother, he wanted his old self back, the person who put him and Layla before everything and anything, but unfortunately, that person was gone and he only had Lin now, a person who valued himself more than others. "No." Kin said and Lucas didn't say anything after that and kept his head in his lap. Lucas wasn’t ready for that answer, he wanted Kin to tell him yes, that this was only temporary, that he would come back to the old him soon, but that wasn’t the answer he got and it got him more depressed than he already was. Kin couldn’t lie to him, he wasn’t that Kin and he could never be, no matter how he would try or pretend, he would never be him, so he wasn’t even going to try, he will just blame it on the incident until he is dead.
