On the other side of the city, two students were studying together, with the male student explaining a math problem to his friend, who was failing to understand the question but she eventually got it and was able to think of a possible answer, that was close but not exactly the right one. The two continued to study until they were interrupted by the door being opened and Nicholas’s mother got in and told them to come and have dinner, then continue to study.
Layla, who was starving, immediately put her pen down and followed Nicholas to the kitchen, where the table was already set and the food ready to be devoured; Layla sat down and waited for Nicholas to sit, and started eating, the food was amazing, she tasted Nicholas’s lunch before but she never expected the warm one to be this good.
“It’s really tasty.” Layla commented with a wide smile and put another piece of meat in her mouth; Nicholas’s mother thanked her and told her to eat as much as she wanted.
“I am happy Nicholas has such a beautiful and diligent friend; he must be really lucky to have you around.” The mother said, which got her son to almost choke on his food because he knew what she meant with those words, his mother wanted to have a girlfriend so badly for some reason, he was only 18, it wasn’t like he was at the age to be married, he still had a long way to go but she desperately wanted him to have a lover, wasn’t having Layla as a friend enough? It was for him.
“I am the lucky one, Nicholas is an amazing person, he is like the little brother I wished I had.” Layla said and glanced at Nicholas and flashed him a smile, she understood him and was ready to cover for him; they were bros, he didn’t see her as a potential lover and she didn’t either, and that idea had to be in his mother’s head.
“A brother…” the dear mother said in a disappointed tone and looked down with a sad expression. When they saw that, Layla regretted what she said and Nicholas started feeling bad.
“Is that bad?” Layla asked with an anxious expression and the mother denied and excused herself to go rest in her room, she was tired from making dinner.
“She thinks I am gay.” Nicholas said which made Layla spit out her water, from her mouth and nose. He gave her a tissue and started explaining. “She is scared I will be excluded from my grandpa’s will if I am gay, my uncle was and my transgender cousin was as well.”
“Oh, but wait, you are not, you have a crush on…” Before she got to say the name, Nicholas stopped her with blushed cheeks and told her he doesn’t, she nodded and said sure, she didn’t believe him, he would start sweating whenever she would start talking to him and he would stare at her for half of the class, he had a crush.
“She found my manga collection.” Nicholas admitted with a sigh, as he started cleaning the table, to escape from Layla’s stare.
“What? How? Didn’t you say you hid it well?” Layla knew about Nicholas’s otaku tendencies and she didn’t mind, for the most part, but she didn’t like how he read full-blown smuts in class sometimes, right before chemistry too.
“I did but she found out somehow.” The day when he found his mother in his room, with his mangas on the floor, was the most horrifying day he had to live through; his mother’s stare, her scared eyes, her shaky voice when she said that she would accept him no matter what but they won’t, that he should consider his life before anything, how she left his room, with tears in her eyes, he chased after her and explained everything, she said she believed him at the moment, but she didn’t.
“That’s bad, I forgot you are a fudanshi and I saw your collection, of course, she is going to think you are gay, have you seen the titles of those things? Crazy and talking of bl books, do you have any about a brother falling for his adopted or stepbrother.” Layla could use some material for how she will push her brothers close and from what Nicholas described mangas.
“Of course, I have five mangas with that topic, want me to lend them to you?” Nicholas went to otaku mode and started thinking of the mangas he had, he had a few, some he would prefer Layla never knew about but he had some, she can read without wanting to bleach her eyes.
“Yes, that would be amazing.” Layla said and got up to help Nicholas to do the dishes.
“But I am going to warn you, your innocence will be gone.” He said as he handed her a wet plate for her to dry.
“Innocence walked out of my door the moment I started using the internet so don’t worry, I have seen it all.”
“No, you didn’t, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Nicholas shrugged as they continued to clean the dishes, under his mother’s eyes, she was happy to see her son interact with a girl and Layla was a wonderful girl, she would make a great wife for her son.
After they finished cleaning the dishes, they were back to studying and an hour later, they were done, it was almost midnight and they were both sleepy and ready to go to slumber, so Layla Lucas to pick her up and Nicholas said he would be there in ten minutes.
While waiting for him, Layla put her head on a pillow and asked: “What would you think if your dad suddenly came back and made your time with your mom much shorter? You would hate it, right?”
“No, because my dad makes my mom happy, her smile when he is here is the widest one, I can see all year and it warms my heart to see her happy, if something makes her happy then I wouldn’t hate it, I would love it because what makes her happy makes me happy.” Nicholas responded honestly; his dad was always on business trips and they don’t see him that often but when they do, his mother would be the brightest she can be and it always made him joyous to see her like that.
When she heard that, Layla remembered Kin’s depressed look when he was sitting in the house, she missed seeing his smile every day and if what Nicholas said was true, that would come back if he had a job, something he wanted to do. She doesn’t want to spend time with a sad Kin, she preferred a happy Kin with fewer hours to spend with rather than the Kin right now.
And with that, Layla left Nicholas’s house with the plan to fully support Kin and ask Lucas to do so; after she hugged Nicholas at the door, she waved goodbye at him and walked to her brother’s car, who didn’t look that happy, he looked like he stubbed his toe and wasn’t over it yet.
“What’s wrong, Lu? Did dad and mom say something?” Layla asked since what usually made Lucas upset was their parents scolding him for nothing and demanding he does more for the company, they always had unreasonable expectations on Lucas and that always pushed him to depression and anxiety, which she hated but she could nothing about it, after all, she was just a high schooler and a girl.
“No, it’s Kin, I want to lock him up, put him in a cage, and have him for myself forever.”
