After Georges left, I went straight to Victor’s door. We had parted over a misunderstanding, and even though I hadn’t done anything wrong, I didn’t want to leave things as they were. I knocked and waited a moment. I tried again a few moments later, but the door still wouldn’t open. I rang the doorbell, thinking he might be at the other end of the apartment or in the shower. Still no response. I then stuck my ear to the door, hearing nothing. He wasn’t here. He might have gone out for a run. I turned back and, after a quick shower, collapsed on my bed for a well-deserved rest. When, several hours later, my mobile phone rang, I was completely disoriented.
