CHAPTER 16

The world didn’t shatter this time. It peeled. Like something unfinished being pulled apart layer by layer, revealing what had always been hidden beneath it. Liora felt it before she saw it. A pull. Deep inside her chest. Not pain. Not fear. Something stronger. Something calling her beyond everything she had known. She stood still on the broken bridge with Cael beside her, watching the sky unravel—not cracking, not bleeding—but opening. And beyond it… there was no sky. Only light. Endless. Unfamiliar. Terrifying. Beautiful. Cael’s grip on her hand tightened. “It’s starting,” he said quietly. Liora didn’t look at him. “What is?” she asked. His voice lowered. “The place we were never supposed to reach.” That made her turn. His expression wasn’t calm anymore. For the first time— Cael looked unsure. “What happens if we go there?” she asked softly. Cael hesitated. Then answered honestly. “We find the truth,” he said. A pause. “Or we stop existing as we are.” Liora exhaled slowly. That didn’t scare her as much as it should have. Not anymore. The space around them began to dissolve. Not violently. Not suddenly. But like a memory fading at the edges. Buildings lost their shape. The bridge beneath their feet thinned into something unreal. And the sky— the sky was no longer above them. It was everywhere. Liora stepped forward. Cael pulled her back gently. “Wait,” he said. She looked at him. “We’ve been waiting this whole time,” she replied. That hit something inside him. But he didn’t argue. Because she was right. “Then we go together,” he said. Liora nodded. “Always,” she replied. They stepped forward. And the world let them go. There was no ground. No sky. No direction. Only light. And silence that felt like something watching. Liora felt weightless. But not lost. Because Cael’s hand was still in hers. And that was enough. “Is this… the system?” she asked softly. Cael looked around. “No,” he said quietly. “This is beneath it.” Her breath caught. “Beneath reality?” He nodded. “The place where it was built.” The light shifted. Slowly. Shapes began forming around them. Not physical. Not solid. Memories. Versions. Fragments. Liora saw herself— Hundreds of versions. Standing. Falling. Laughing. Crying. Loving. Losing. Every version of her that had ever existed… was here. Her breath trembled. “That’s… me,” she whispered. Cael nodded. “Yes.” She stepped forward slowly. “They’re all connected,” she said. “Yes,” he replied. “To you.” The fragments moved. Not randomly. They were drawn toward her. Like she was the center of everything. Liora felt it. The pull. The weight of all those lives. All those choices. All those endings. “I remember them,” she whispered. Her voice broke slightly. “I remember everything.” The system responded. Not as a voice this time. But as a presence. Something vast. Something ancient. Something watching her from everywhere at once. “CONVERGENCE CONFIRMED.” Liora froze. The word echoed through her. “Convergence…” she repeated softly. Cael stepped closer. “That’s what you are,” he said. Her eyes flickered. “All of them… are me?” Cael nodded. “Yes.” A pause. “And you are all of them.” The weight of that truth hit her all at once. Not just emotionally. But physically. Her body trembled slightly. Her breathing uneven. “I’ve lived all of this?” she whispered. “Yes,” Cael said gently. “And ended it,” he added softly. Liora turned toward him. “And you?” she asked. “What are you in all of this?” Cael hesitated. Then answered. “I am the one who stays.” That silence stretched between them. Heavy. Understanding. The system shifted again. Closer now. More focused. “ANCHOR INSTABILITY DETECTED.” Liora felt it immediately. Cael’s hand flickered slightly in hers. Her heart dropped. “No,” she said. She tightened her grip. “You’re not taking him again.” The light around them distorted. The system reacted. “ANCHOR MUST BE REMOVED.” Cael exhaled slowly. “This is the core,” he said quietly. “It won’t stop trying.” Liora looked at him. “Then we don’t let it win,” she said. The fragments of her other selves began moving faster now. Circling. Merging. Pulling toward her. Liora felt herself expanding. Not physically. But… completely. Like she was becoming everything she had ever been. “It’s too much,” she whispered. Cael stepped closer instantly. “Stay with me,” he said. Her voice trembled. “I don’t know where I end anymore.” Cael lifted her hand gently. “You end where I am,” he said. That grounded her. Not fully. But enough. She looked at him. “If I’m all of this,” she said slowly, “then I can change it.” Cael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What do you mean?” Liora stepped forward. Toward the center of the light. “I don’t have to follow the system,” she said. “I can rewrite it.” The system reacted violently. The space trembled. “UNAUTHORIZED ACTION.” Cael grabbed her arm. “Liora—this is dangerous.” She looked at him. “Everything about us has always been dangerous,” she said. Then softer— “But this time, I understand it.” She turned back toward the light. Toward herself. Toward everything. “I am not your error,” she said calmly. The system pulsed. “YOU ARE THE INSTABILITY.” Liora shook her head slowly. “No,” she said. “I am the choice.” The fragments surged toward her. Faster. Brighter. Stronger. Cael stepped closer behind her. “If you do this,” he said quietly, “there’s no going back.” Liora didn’t turn. “I know,” she said. She reached forward. Into the light. Into herself. “I choose love,” she whispered. The system screamed. Reality bent. Time fractured. Everything collapsed inward— And for the first time— Liora didn’t fall with it. She stood. At the center. Holding everything together. Not breaking. Not resetting. But becoming. Behind her, Cael watched in silence. Not afraid. Not uncertain. Just… there. Like he had always been. And as the light reshaped itself around her— one truth remained unbroken: No matter how many worlds ended… She would always choose him. And this time— the world would learn how to survive it.
