CHAPTER 11

When Forever Starts to Break It began with something small. A blink. That was all. Liora was standing by the window when the world shifted—so subtly she almost convinced herself it was her imagination. Almost. The sunlight outside dimmed for half a second, like someone had covered the sky with a hand. Then it returned. Bright. Warm. Normal. But her body reacted before her mind could catch up. Something was wrong. She turned slowly. “Cael?” she called softly. No answer. The apartment was still. Too still. Her heart tightened. “Cael…” she said again, louder this time. Silence. Then— A soft breath behind her. “I’m here.” She spun around immediately. Cael was standing near the doorway, but something about him felt… distant. Not physically. But like he wasn’t fully anchored in the room. “You scared me,” she said, letting out a shaky breath. Cael studied her for a moment. Then smiled faintly. “I didn’t mean to,” he said. But his voice didn’t fully match his expression. Liora noticed. She always noticed now. Something had changed. She stepped closer. “Are you okay?” she asked. Cael hesitated. That hesitation alone was enough to make her chest tighten. “I don’t know,” he admitted. Liora frowned. “What does that mean?” Cael looked toward the window. “The world feels… unstable again,” he said quietly. Liora turned sharply. “It was fine last night,” she said. “It always is before it isn’t,” he replied. That silence between them felt heavier now. Liora crossed her arms slightly. “No cracks,” she said, almost like she was convincing herself. “No shadows. Nothing is happening.” Cael looked at her. “That doesn’t mean it’s safe,” he said gently. She shook her head. “I don’t understand anymore,” she whispered. Cael stepped closer. “Liora…” But she stepped back slightly. Because something in his voice— was different. Not cold. Not distant. Just… uncertain. And Cael was never uncertain. “Tell me what’s going on,” she said firmly now. Cael studied her for a long moment. Then said something that made her heart drop slightly. “I think I’m starting to forget again.” Silence. Heavy. Immediate. Liora’s breath caught. “What?” Cael looked at his hand like it didn’t fully belong to him. “I can feel it slipping,” he said quietly. “The cycles… they’re pulling back.” Liora shook her head quickly. “No,” she said. “No, we broke the cycle. We stayed. We chose—” But Cael interrupted softly. “And that’s why it’s changing.” Her voice dropped. “That doesn’t make sense.” Cael stepped closer. “It does,” he said. “Because staying with you isn’t supposed to be stable.” That sentence hurt more than she expected. Liora stared at him. “So what are you saying?” she asked quietly. Cael hesitated. Then answered honestly. “I think I’m becoming part of the system again.” Her stomach dropped. “No…” she whispered. Cael looked at her carefully. “I don’t want to leave you,” he said. That made her step forward immediately. “Then don’t,” she said quickly. “Don’t let it happen.” Cael’s expression softened. “I don’t think it’s something I can stop,” he said. A silence followed. Different now. Not peaceful. Not safe. Uncertain. Liora felt something building in her chest. Fear. But also anger. “You promised,” she said quietly. Cael blinked slightly. “When?” She stepped closer. “When you said you always come back,” she said. “When you said you always stay.” Cael looked at her. “I do come back,” he said softly. “But not always as myself.” That broke something in her expression. Outside the window— the sky flickered again. Just once. But enough. Liora saw it immediately. “No…” she whispered. Cael turned toward it instantly. His entire body went still. That reaction told her everything before he even spoke. “It’s starting,” he said. Liora grabbed his arm. “No,” she said firmly. “Not again. Not after everything.” Cael looked at her hand on his arm. Then at her. “I don’t think this is something we can stop by holding on tighter,” he said softly. That made her grip loosen slightly. But she didn’t let go. “I don’t care,” she said. “I’m not losing you again.” Cael’s eyes softened. “You already have me,” he said quietly. Her voice trembled. “That’s not enough.” A pulse moved through the apartment. Like reality itself had taken a breath. Cael stepped closer. “Liora,” he said gently. But she shook her head. “No,” she said. “Not like this. Not again.” Her voice cracked slightly. “I finally had you.” Cael lifted his hand slowly toward her face. But stopped just before touching her. “I’m still here,” he said softly. But even he didn’t sound fully convinced anymore. The light in the room flickered. Once. Twice. Then steadied. But something had already changed. Liora felt it in her bones. The shift. The pull. The beginning of loss. “You’re fading,” she whispered. Cael didn’t deny it. That was worse. Silence stretched between them. Then Liora did something unexpected. She stepped forward. Closing the distance fully. Cael froze slightly. “Liora…” She looked up at him. “If you’re disappearing,” she said softly, “then I’m not wasting time pretending I’m okay.” Before he could respond— she kissed him. Not gentle like before. Not careful. But urgent. Desperate. Real. Like she was trying to hold him inside the moment itself. Cael froze for a split second. Then responded immediately. Pulling her closer. Holding her like he could anchor himself through her alone. The world outside flickered again. Harder this time. But neither of them pulled away. Not yet. Because this moment mattered more than the instability outside it. When they finally broke apart, Liora rested her forehead against his. Her voice was quiet. “I don’t care how many times it breaks,” she said. Cael looked at her softly. “Liora…” She continued. “I’ll find you every time,” she whispered. “Even if you forget me. Even if I forget myself. Even if the world erases everything.” Cael closed his eyes briefly. That hurt him more than anything. “I don’t want you to carry that,” he said softly. She shook her head. “I already do,” she replied. A silence followed. Then Cael said something quieter than everything before it. “What if I don’t come back the same?” Liora didn’t hesitate. “Then I’ll fall in love with you again,” she said. That broke him slightly. Emotion flickering across his face. The sky outside cracked. This time visibly. Liora saw it through the window. But she didn’t move. She stayed close to him. Cael looked at it too. Then back at her. “This is it,” he said quietly. Liora nodded slowly. “I know.” He stepped closer. “Are you scared?” he asked. She smiled faintly through everything. “Yes,” she admitted. “But not of you.” That made him still completely. The crack widened further. Light spilling through it. The apartment trembling slightly. But Liora reached for his hand anyway. “I choose you,” she said softly. Cael tightened his grip on her instantly. “And I choose you,” he replied. The world began to dissolve again. But this time— they didn’t run. They didn’t fight apart. They held each other as everything started to break. And in the middle of collapse— Liora whispered: “Find me again.” Cael answered immediately. “I always do.” And the world ended— not in fear. But in love refusing to let go.
