CHAPTER 8

For a while, nothing broke. That was the most dangerous part. Liora almost believed it. Almost. The world looked normal again—sunlight, moving people, steady skies. But she had started learning something important now: Normal was not the same as safe. Not anymore. She stood by the window of a small apartment Cael had taken her to, watching the city breathe outside like nothing had ever ended before. Behind her, Cael was quietly making tea. Like this was life. Like they weren’t standing on the edge of something fragile. “You’re staring again,” he said gently. Liora turned slightly. “I can’t help it,” she replied. “It feels like if I look away… it’ll change.” Cael handed her a cup. “It might,” he said honestly. That should have scared her. But instead, she smiled faintly. “You’re very calm for someone who says the world keeps ending,” she said. Cael looked at her for a moment. “I’ve learned that panic doesn’t stop it,” he replied. “Then what does?” she asked softly. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he said, “You.” The words settled between them again. Always her. Always the center of something too big to understand. Liora looked down at her cup. “I still don’t know what I am to you,” she admitted quietly. Cael stepped closer. “You’re the reason I keep choosing this world,” he said. “That doesn’t sound like an answer,” she replied. “It is,” he said softly. “Just not one you like yet.” That made her laugh lightly. A small sound. But real. Later that evening, they walked through the city together. Side by side. No urgency. Just closeness. Their hands brushed once… then stayed that way. Not fully holding. Not fully apart. Something in between. Liora noticed how people moved normally around them, unaware of everything hidden beneath their peace. “Do you think they know?” she asked quietly. “Know what?” Cael replied. “That everything could disappear again.” Cael looked at the crowd. “No,” he said. “They’re allowed to forget.” Liora frowned slightly. “And we’re not?” Cael’s grip on her hand tightened just a little. “No,” he said softly. “We’re not.” They stopped near a small streetlight glowing warm in the evening. The air felt calmer there. Safer. Liora leaned lightly against Cael’s shoulder without thinking. He didn’t move away. Instead, he adjusted slightly so she could lean more comfortably. That small action made her heart feel strange. Soft. Heavy. Good. “You’re different here,” she said quietly. “Here?” he asked. “In this version,” she clarified. “You’re… softer.” Cael looked at her. “I don’t lower my guard,” he said. She tilted her head slightly. “No?” He shook his head. “I just trust you more when you’re close.” That made her look up at him. Slowly. “Why?” she asked. Cael didn’t hesitate this time. “Because when you’re close,” he said softly, “the world doesn’t feel like it’s falling apart.” That silence after his words felt warmer than the streetlight above them. Liora shifted slightly so she was facing him now. “Cael,” she said. “Yes?” “If everything resets again… will you still find me?” He looked at her carefully. “I always do,” he said. “But will you remember me?” she asked. That question made something flicker in his eyes. Not fear. But something deeper. Something like pain. “I don’t always remember,” he admitted. Her chest tightened slightly. “But I still come back?” she asked. Cael nodded. “Every time.” That hit her harder than she expected. A quiet wind passed through the street. Liora stepped closer to him now. “So even if you forget me,” she said softly, “you still choose me?” Cael looked at her for a long moment. “Yes,” he said. That one word felt like everything. Liora smiled faintly. “That sounds like love,” she said. Cael didn’t deny it. He just looked at her. Like she was something he refused to lose again. For a moment, the world stayed calm. Too calm. Liora should have known better. She felt it first. A small pressure in the air. A shift. Cael noticed immediately. His body went still. “…It’s starting,” he said quietly. Liora straightened. “What is?” Cael looked at the sky. The faintest line appeared above them. So small it could have been imagination. But it wasn’t. “The balance is breaking,” he said. Liora swallowed. “We were just okay,” she whispered. Cael turned to her. “That’s usually when it begins.” The streetlight flickered. Once. Twice. Liora grabbed his arm instinctively. “Not again…” she said softly. Cael placed his hand over hers. “This time is different,” he said. “How?” she asked. He looked at her. “Because now you remember me too.” That stopped her completely. The crack in the sky began forming again. Far away. But visible. Like a warning returning. Liora’s heart tightened. “So what do we do?” she asked. Cael stepped closer. This time, he didn’t hesitate. “We choose faster,” he said. Her breath shook slightly. “Choose what?” Cael lifted his hand gently to her cheek. “Each other,” he said softly. “But this time,” he added, “we don’t wait for the world to approve it.” Liora stared at him. Fear was there again. But so was something stronger now. Understanding. “And if it ends again?” she whispered. Cael leaned his forehead lightly against hers. “Then we start again,” he said. A pause. Then softer— “Or we stop pretending we’re afraid of loving each other.” That made her eyes close slightly. Because that… felt true. The sky crack widened slightly in the distance. But here, in this moment, they didn’t move away. Liora stayed close. Cael stayed closer. And for the first time… The ending didn’t feel like an ending. It felt like a choice they were finally ready to make together.
