CHAPTER 4

The moment their hands touched, the world reacted. Not slowly. Not gently. But like something had been waiting for permission. The crack in the sky widened with a sharp pulse of light, stretching across the horizon like a wound that refused to heal. Outside the bookstore, the looping movements shattered into chaos—people stumbling out of repeated patterns, voices overlapping in confusion, time breaking apart completely. Liora gasped, tightening her grip on Cael’s hand. “Why is it reacting like this?” she asked, fear rising again. Cael didn’t let go. “Because you chose to stay,” he said. Her chest tightened. “That’s a bad thing?” He hesitated. And that hesitation was enough. The ground trembled again, stronger this time. A glass vase near the window slipped and shattered on the floor. Liora flinched. “This is getting worse!” she said. Cael stepped closer, placing himself slightly in front of her without thinking. Protective. Instinctive. “I won’t let anything happen to you,” he said firmly. Liora stared at him. Even now… with the world breaking apart… he was focused on her. Not the sky. Not the danger. Her. “Why do you keep protecting me?” she asked, her voice softer now. “Even when I’m the reason all of this is happening?” Cael looked at her like the answer was simple. “Because you’re still you.” That didn’t make sense. And yet… it did. Another crack split the sky. This time, something fell from it. Not debris. Not light. Something darker. A shadow-like ripple that moved unnaturally, like it didn’t belong in this world. Liora’s breath caught. “What is that?” Cael’s expression changed instantly. For the first time— Fear. “They’ve found us,” he said. Her heart dropped. “Who?” He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he pulled her back slightly. “Stay behind me.” The shadow moved closer, slipping through the broken sky like it had been waiting for a chance to enter. It didn’t have a clear shape. Just a presence. Cold. Watching. Hungry. Liora felt it immediately—like something was looking through her, not at her. “What is it?” she whispered. Cael’s voice lowered. “Something that exists between worlds,” he said. “Something that cleans up what shouldn’t exist.” Her pulse raced. “You mean… us?” He didn’t deny it. The shadow flickered closer, distorting the air around it. The lights in the bookstore burst. Darkness flooded the room again. Liora instinctively moved closer to Cael. “Why does it feel like it’s… after me?” she asked. Cael tightened his grip on her hand. “Because it is.” Her breath shook. “Why?” He finally said the truth. “Because you’re not supposed to remember me.” That hit harder than the fear. “Then why do I?” she asked, almost desperate now. Cael looked at her. Soft. Broken. “Because you chose me… even when you weren’t supposed to.” The shadow lunged. Fast. Too fast. Liora didn’t even have time to react. But Cael did. He stepped forward instantly, pulling her behind him as the shadow collided with something invisible—like a barrier formed by his presence alone. A burst of light flashed between them. The force pushed him back slightly. “Cael!” Liora cried. “I’m fine,” he said quickly, though his voice strained. The shadow recoiled, then circled slowly. Like it was studying them. Waiting. “What do we do?” Liora asked, panic rising again. Cael’s eyes stayed locked on the shadow. “We don’t let it separate us.” Her heart pounded. “Why?” His answer came without hesitation. “Because that’s how it wins.” The shadow moved again, faster this time—splitting into fragments, each one flickering like pieces of darkness trying to surround them. Liora’s fear spiked. “It’s multiplying!” “I know,” Cael said. He pulled her closer this time, his arm around her as he turned, keeping her shielded. The closeness hit her suddenly. His heartbeat. Fast. Steady. Real. Even in chaos. “Stay with me,” he said softly. Her voice trembled. “I am.” Another fragment lunged— But this time, Liora reacted. Without thinking. She reached out. And the moment her hand moved— Light burst from her. Bright. Blinding. The shadows froze instantly. The entire room went still. Even Cael. “Liora…” he whispered. She stared at her own hands. “What… did I just do?” The light faded slowly. The shadows retreated slightly, as if burned. Afraid. Cael looked at her differently now. Not just protective. Not just careful. But… certain. “You’re starting to remember,” he said. Her heart raced. “Remember what?” He stepped closer, still holding her. “Who you really are.” Outside, the sky cracked again. Louder. Wider. The world trembling harder now. Liora looked at him, overwhelmed. “I don’t understand anything,” she said. “I don’t know who I am… or why this is happening… or why you won’t leave even when everything is falling apart!” Her voice broke. “I’m scared.” The honesty hit harder than everything else. Cael didn’t hesitate this time. He pulled her fully into his arms. Holding her. Strong. Steady. “I know,” he said softly. “I know.” She didn’t pull away. Didn’t resist. Because somehow… That felt like the safest place in a breaking world. The shadows stayed at a distance now. Watching. Waiting. But not attacking. Liora’s breathing slowly calmed against him. “Why did it stop?” she asked quietly. Cael looked at the fading darkness. “Because of you,” he said. “That light… what was it?” He hesitated. Then said something that changed everything. “It’s the same power that ended the world.” Her heart skipped. “So I’m the danger.” “No,” he said firmly, pulling back slightly to look at her. “You’re the choice.” She searched his eyes. “What does that mean?” He didn’t answer directly. Instead, he said: “It means you decide how this ends.” The ground trembled again. Stronger. More urgent. Time was running out. Liora felt it now. That pull again. But clearer. Stronger. Like something inside her was waking up. Something powerful. Something dangerous. “What if I make the wrong choice?” she whispered. Cael looked at her. No fear. No doubt. “Then I’ll be right there with you,” he said. Her chest tightened. “Even if everything ends?” He didn’t hesitate. “Especially then.” Liora stared at him. At the way he stood. At the way he stayed. At the way he chose her… again and again. And for the first time— Her fear didn’t disappear. But it changed. It became something else. Something stronger. Something braver. She took a small step closer. Still in his arms. Still trembling. “…Then don’t leave me,” she said softly. Cael’s grip on her tightened. “I won’t.” Outside, the sky broke further. The world unraveling faster now. The shadows waiting. Time collapsing. But inside that moment— They stood together. Not running. Not hiding. Choosing. And somewhere deep within Liora— The truth continued to rise. Not just about who she was… But about what she was willing to become. Even if it meant— Loving him till the end of the world.
