Bridgette's POV
I stepped outside to the cold gush of wind. My eyes brimmed with unshed tears as I watched a couple walk over with their daughter.
Her face was brimming with smiles and mine...it struck a perfect contrast to mine when I was her age.
"Ring..." The sudden ring of my phone snapped me out of my reverie, pulling me back to reality.
I picked the phone out of my coat pockets and checked the screen, a heavy exasperated sigh escaped from my lips at the name of the caller.
I swiped up, and the frantic voice of my assistant filled the line almost immediately.
"Hello Miss Bridgette, are you there?"
"Yes I'm Jennie, what's the matter, it's past work hour," I said my face scrunching at the urgency in her tone.
"The CEO is in the office and it seems like his assistant has dropped a message that he'll be here later in the day but..."
"But what Jennie, stop acting like you're in a heist," I retorted, my patience thinning.
"We didn't get ours and now, he's threatening to suspend our whole department for negligence of work," She said and I let out a hiss, as I waved down the nearest cab.
"He won't dare do that, Jennie, is he there with you?" I asked, stating the location to the driver.
"Ye—yes he is,"
"Good, now put the phone on speaker," I said, waiting for her words.
"I have, Miss Bridgette," She said.
"Hello there Mr. Rhysand, as my assistant might have already told you, whatever message was sent to each department surely didn't get to us," I said, indicating for the driver to go faster.
"Are you trying to make an excuse for your act of negligence, Bridgette?" The bastard asked, getting on my already thin nerve.
"I'm very sure you are intelligent enough to be in the position of the CEO Mr Rhysand, we did not receive the message, and if you are going to blame anyone, you should be blaming your secretary, not my people," I stated, as the car drove closer and I could see the high walls of the company.
"Are you trying to call me stupid?" He retorted, making me scoff in response to his ridiculous question.
"I'm very sure everyone heard what I said loud and clear, and Mr Rhys, there is no part I mentioned stupid," I said, as the car stopped in front of the company, I hurried in, save for the fact that the security already recognized me and I didn't have to go through the identification process.
"You've no excuses for your negligence Bridgette, and for that, your team will be suspended and..."
"There's no Mr Rhysand, and we definitely are not giving you an excuse, have your secretary check from her end if the messages reached us and then decide if we were making up an excuse or not," I said as I stepped into the elevator, pressing the buttons to my office floor.
He paused in his response, probably staring at his secretary with those evil brown eyes of his.
I could hear a slight whimper from underneath and he was about to say another word when the elevation door opened, and I stepped straight into my office.
"I believe we can talk better this way," I said before hanging up the call, announcing my presence in the room.
"Miss Bridgette," Jennie called, heaving a sigh of relief as I stepped into the office.
"You didn't have the mail sent to our department," I said, directing my attention to the cause of my nemesis tonight.
"I—I, I did," She argued, lowering her eyes to avoid contact with mine.
"Your actions are already a clear indication that you did not," I said before turning to him— Rhysand Warner, the CEO of the company I worked in and the man I hated the most.
"I believe the situation is clear now Mr Rhys, the fault isn't ours and as much as you might want to project this on us, I know that with your abilities, and sense of leadership, you know the person to hold at hand," I said, smirking at the fact that he was stuck for words.
"I'll make sure she's punished for that, not aside from that, where is your end of the task assigned to, I'm sure you wouldn't give me the excuse of not being told on time for that," He said, smirking at the thought that he might have gotten me in a corner.
"Not at all Mr. Rhys, my team and I are named the best team in the company for a reason, we already have everything in place," I cut in and stepped closer to Jennie.
"Jennie, bring them out," I said, and stepped sideways while she walked to my desk, bringing out the perfectly ready documents.
The men behind him lowered their heads
to hide their laughs, while I just stared with a hint of mockery as Jennie handed the documents to him.
"And is this what the arrangement is?" He asked, flipping the pages of the document annoyingly, looking and searching for the fault he'd never find in them.
"Well, you can have this back," He said, handing the documents back to me.
"The business partners are going to be arriving any time soon and I want you all to do your best, a single mistake and I'll make sure you pay for it in ways you won't imagine," He gruffed, while I turned my back on him, walking back to Jennie.
"Where are the rest, and why are you the only one here?" I asked.
"I've made a call to every one of them, and I came here first because I live in the company's apartment, and was the first person his secretary called," She explained, seething angrily at Rhysand's secretary.
"It's fine, we'll handle it," I muttered before plopping onto a seat, exhaustion washing over me.
The turmoil of emotions that coursed through me was crazy and I could only hold back my emotions—most especially the one that involved slamming the head of this bastard that stood before me against the wall.
