AMARA’S POV
The hospital doesn’t feel like a battlefield anymore.
It feels like a place we keep returning to.
Not because we have to.
Because something here changed us.
Alexander is sitting up more today.
Still careful.
Still recovering.
But more like himself again.
Just… different.
Less guarded.
Not completely open.
But no longer unreachable.
I notice it in small things.
The way he watches me without immediately looking away.
The way he speaks without weighing every word like it’s a negotiation.
The way silence between us doesn’t feel like distance anymore.
I sit down beside him, placing my bag on the chair.
He looks at me.
“Long day?” he asks quietly.
I shrug slightly.
“Not really.”
A pause.
Then I add—
“Just tiring in a different way.”
He nods like he understands without needing details.
That alone feels new.
He used to always need explanations.
Now he just… listens.
---
ALEXANDER’S POV
She looks calmer today.
Not fully rested.
But lighter than before.
That is what I notice first.
Not her words.
Her presence.
It no longer feels like she is holding herself together in front of me.
It feels like she is simply here.
I find myself watching her more than I intend to.
Not in the way I used to.
Not analyzing.
Just… noticing.
“I have something to tell you,” I say after a while.
She looks up immediately.
“Go on.”
I hesitate.
Then—
“I’m being discharged soon.”
Silence follows.
Not heavy.
Just real.
Her expression shifts slightly.
“Oh.”
That’s all she says at first.
Then softer—
“That’s good.”
I watch her carefully.
“Is it?”
She looks at me for a moment.
Then nods.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But it feels strange.”
That honesty lands differently.
Because she is not pretending anymore either.
---
AMARA’S POV
I don’t know why that makes something in my chest tighten.
Maybe because I got used to this place more than I expected.
Or maybe because I got used to him here.
Alexander watches me quietly.
“You don’t like it?” he asks.
I shake my head.
“That’s not what I said.”
A faint shift in his expression.
“Then what did you mean?”
I hesitate.
Because I don’t want to overthink it.
But I also don’t want to lie.
“I mean…” I start slowly. “It feels like everything is moving again.”
Silence.
Then I add softly—
“And I’m not sure I’m ready for that speed yet.”
He nods once.
No pressure.
No correction.
Just understanding.
That alone makes my shoulders relax slightly.
---
ALEXANDER’S POV
She is not afraid of me anymore.
Not in the way she used to be.
Now she is afraid of change.
That is different.
And important.
Because change means uncertainty.
I understand that better than I used to.
“I can slow down,” I say quietly.
She looks at me immediately.
“You don’t need to slow down your life because of me.”
A pause.
Then I answer honestly.
“It’s not because of you.”
Her expression softens slightly.
“Then why?”
I think about it carefully.
Then say—
“Because I don’t want to go back to the version of things where I don’t notice what matters.”
Silence.
She doesn’t respond immediately.
But she doesn’t look away either.
That tells me enough.
---
AMARA’S POV
There’s something about the way he says that.
It doesn’t feel like control.
It feels like awareness.
Like he’s choosing to stay present now instead of running ahead.
I adjust slightly in my seat.
“Alexander,” I say quietly.
He looks at me immediately.
“Yes.”
I hesitate.
Then—
“Do you ever feel like everything changed too fast?”
A pause.
His answer is immediate.
“Yes.”
That honesty surprises me slightly.
Then he adds—
“But I don’t think it was wrong.”
That makes me look at him more carefully.
“Why?”
His voice lowers slightly.
“Because I think I would’ve kept missing things if nothing forced me to stop.”
That lands deeper than expected.
Because I know exactly what he means.
---
ALEXANDER’S POV
There is a quiet between us again.
But it is not empty.
It feels like understanding settling slowly into place.
She leans back slightly in her chair.
Not leaving.
Just resting.
And I realize something I didn’t before.
She is no longer adjusting herself around me constantly.
She is just existing.
And I am doing the same.
That is new.
And stable in a different way.
---
AMARA’S POV
After a while, I stand slowly.
“I should go get some air,” I say.
He nods slightly.
“Come back.”
It’s not a request anymore.
It’s simple.
I pause at the door.
Then turn slightly.
“I will.”
And for some reason—
I don’t hesitate when I say it.
Not even a little.
---
ALEXANDER’S POV
She leaves the room.
But it doesn’t feel like absence anymore.
Just temporary space.
And I find myself thinking something quietly I wouldn’t have allowed before.
I want her to come back.
Not because I need her here.
But because I want her here.
And that difference is something I am still learning how to understand.
