Chapter two. The warning

CHAPTER TWO: THE WARNING The figure stood in the doorway, motionless. Adaeze’s breath caught in her throat. Her Bible was still clutched tightly in her hands, her fingers digging into the leather cover. The dim moonlight from the window cast eerie shadows on the walls, making the figure appear even taller. Whoever it was… they were watching her. The wind outside howled again, rattling the old metal window frame. The door creaked slightly, as if daring the figure to take a step inside. Adaeze swallowed hard. She was alone. The other junior students in her dorm were fast asleep, exhausted from the day’s activities. If she screamed, would anyone wake up? The figure suddenly took a step forward. Adaeze’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Who—who is there?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. The figure didn’t respond immediately. Instead, it moved forward just enough for the moonlight to catch its face. Adaeze’s blood ran cold. It was Blessing Ogundele, an SS2 student. One of the popular girls. But there was something different about her tonight. Her usually bright eyes looked dull, almost lifeless. Her face was pale, and there was something… unnatural about the way she was standing. Like she wasn’t entirely herself. “Go back to sleep, little girl,” Blessing’s voice was flat, almost robotic. “You don’t want to know things that don’t concern you.” Adaeze’s fingers tightened around her Bible. Something was wrong. She had seen Blessing before—laughing in the dining hall, gossiping with her friends after prep. But this? This wasn’t the same Blessing. It was as if she was being controlled by something else. Something dark. Adaeze inhaled deeply, forcing herself to speak. “Who sent you?” Blessing blinked, her lips parting slightly as if confused by the question. Then, slowly, a smile stretched across her face—unnatural, too wide, too forced. “The Shadows are watching,” she whispered. “And they don’t like nosy girls.” The candle on Adaeze’s bedside table flickered violently. Then, just as suddenly as she had appeared, Blessing turned and walked away, disappearing into the dark corridor. The door creaked shut behind her. Adaeze sat frozen for a long time, her mind racing. This was a warning. But from who? And more importantly… What would happen if she didn’t listen? --- THE CIRCLE OF FEAR The next morning, Divine Grace Girls’ College buzzed with its usual activities. Students moved around the compound, rushing to the assembly ground, chatting about assignments and weekend gist. But Oluchi Nwosu wasn’t paying attention to any of it. She sat at the edge of her bed, her mind replaying what she had seen the night before—the hooded girls, the secret gathering, the eerie silence of their footsteps. Her stomach twisted. She needed to talk to someone. But who? Not the teachers—they wouldn’t believe her. Not her classmates—most of them were either too afraid or too ignorant to notice anything unusual. Her only real option was Farida. She found her best friend near the lockers, fixing her tie in front of the tiny cracked mirror. “Farida,” Oluchi whispered urgently, pulling her aside. “I saw them again last night.” Farida sighed, already looking exhausted. “Oluchi, I told you to stop this matter.” “No, listen to me,” Oluchi pressed. “They were wearing robes. They went to the old classroom block. I swear, something is going on in this school, and it’s not normal.” Farida turned to her, lowering her voice. “Of course it’s not normal. Everyone knows that. But we keep quiet because that’s the only way to survive.” Oluchi’s stomach dropped. “So you believe me?” Farida sighed again. “Believe you? My dear, I have believed since JSS2.” Oluchi’s eyes widened. “You knew?” Farida nodded, her expression grim. “I didn’t just know. I saw.” A chill ran through Oluchi’s body. Farida took a deep breath before continuing, her voice barely above a whisper. “I saw what happened to Angela.” Angela. The name sent shivers down Oluchi’s spine. Angela had been one of the smartest, brightest SS1 girls in the school. But last term, something changed. She became quiet, withdrawn. And then… she vanished. No explanation. No transfer letter. No goodbyes. One day she was in school. The next day, she was gone. And nobody ever spoke about her again. Farida’s voice shook as she said, “She found out something she wasn’t supposed to. And then she disappeared.” Oluchi’s mouth felt dry. Now, she was sure of one thing. She was in danger. --- A TRAP IS SET At that very moment, deep inside the old classroom block, Senior Yewande sat on a wooden chair, calmly drinking tea from a small white cup. She listened as Aisha whispered something in her ear. Then she smiled. “Oluchi Nwosu,” she said, swirling the tea in her cup. “She’s getting too curious.” Chiamaka smirked. “What should we do about her?” Yewande took a slow sip, savoring the warmth before setting the cup down. Then she leaned forward, her eyes glinting with something cold and dangerous. “Let’s invite her,” she said. “Let’s show her what happens to girls who don’t mind their business.” Aisha grinned. Chiamaka laughed. And somewhere, across the school compound, Oluchi felt a sudden chill run down her spine. Like something… or someone… had just marked her for destruction. --- TO BE CONTINUED… Do you want Chapter Three?
