Chapter 11: The Purge Event

1760 Words
She immediately noticed that something about the message seemed odd… almost familiar. Kate noticed her expression immediately. "What happened?" Zamora quickly locked the screen. "Nothing." The stranger eyed her warily, but just as he was about to say anything, another system alert echoed throughout the city. DISTRICT 4 CURFEW VIOLATIONS EXCEEDING EXPECTED LIMITS. ENFORCER SWEEPS INCREASED. Far away, sirens screamed louder across the skyline while drones flooded throughout the lower streets, scanning buildings and alleyways with red searchlights. "We're running out of time," the stranger muttered. Then, suddenly, several survivors sprinted past them through the rain, carrying stolen supplies and smartphones. One of them laughed hysterically. "Yes, I'm rich!" Another survivor immediately tackled him into the flooded street. Their phones collided, and a notification flashed brightly. TRANSFER COMPLETE: 8,000 CREDITS RECEIVED. Kate stared in disbelief. "You can steal credits directly?" The stranger nodded once. "If transfer permissions unlock during combat or death, yes." "What kind of place is this…?" Nobody answered her because, honestly, they were starting to understand themselves. Then another scream echoed nearby. A player stumbled out from beneath a collapsed overpass, his skin badly burned from the acid rain, while blood streamed down his face. "HELP ME—" TARGET IDENTIFIED. A red laser flashed on his chest from above, and the guy just froze right there. Slowly descending from the transport platforms hovering in midair were a group of enforcers who landed in the center of the flooded road. "Please…" he whispered weakly. One enforcer stepped forward. "Survival probability below acceptable threshold." The player started crying. "No, please— I can still work—" The enforcer raised its weapon. BOOM. The body collapsed lifelessly into the neon water. PLAYER GUEST119 HAS BEEN TERMINATED. LEVEL ONE REASSIGNMENT INITIATED. The enforcers immediately walked away afterward as if nothing had happened. Kate looked sick. "They didn't even hesitate…" The stranger's expression remained cold. "Elysium removes liabilities." Then her phone vibrated again. PRIVATE MESSAGE UPDATED. The screen glitched wildly before a countdown appeared. BLACK MARKET ACCESS: 00:14:59 REMAINING. Another sentence slowly appeared underneath. HIGH-VALUE TARGET DETECTED IN DISTRICT 9. BONUS REWARD AVAILABLE. Her insides churned with force because something about that particular message made her feel some sort of connection. And then suddenly every screen throughout the district flickered overhead. PLAYER CAIN HAS PURCHASED A TEMPORARY CURFEW EXEMPTION. DISTRICT STATUS UPDATED. Nearby survivors reacted immediately. "How much money does this guy HAVE?!" "He's already safe?!" One woman looked completely broken. "We're still trying to survive…" The stranger suddenly grabbed her arm. "Forget the message." "What?" "District 9 is dangerous." He said flatly "More dangerous than this?" she snapped. PLAYER COCKPRINCESS HAS BEEN TERMINATED DURING A GANGBANG SESSION. LEVEL ONE REASSIGNMENT INITIATED. His silence answered her immediately, and then another system announcement echoed throughout Elysium. "I guess that's a good way to go," someone shouted nearby BLACK MARKET EVENT ACTIVE. ILLEGAL TRANSACTIONS TEMPORARILY UNTRACEABLE. The city changed instantly, and hidden doors opened beneath neon signs. Masked civilians emerged from underground entrances, and weapons appeared openly throughout the streets. Even some drones suddenly rerouted away from certain districts. Kate looked horrified. "The entire city just changed…" "No," the stranger said quietly. "This is the real city." Acid rain continued pouring through the glowing streets while Elysium transformed around them completely. Civilians who had looked normal moments ago now openly carried weapons, modified tech, and glowing black-market devices through the city, while holographic advertisements flickered wildly overhead. BLACK MARKET EVENT ACTIVE. ILLEGAL TRANSACTIONS TEMPORARILY UNTRACEABLE. The announcement echoed repeatedly throughout the district. "So crime is just… allowed now?" Kate asked. The stranger shook his head. "Only because the system profits from it." That sentence hit Zamora harder than expected because he sounded like someone who already understood this world far too well. Then another global alert flashed overhead. PLAYER KAI HAS OPENED A REGISTERED SAFEHOUSE IN DISTRICT 3. SURVIVAL RATING INCREASED. Players throughout the street reacted instantly. "A safehouse?!" "How much did that cost?" "That fast?!" She noticed it immediately because every alert changed people: some became hopeful, some greedy, and some looked helplessly desperate. Elysium controlled everyone through progression, and then her phone vibrated again. BLACK MARKET ACCESS: 00:09:44 REMAINING. The stranger noticed her screen this time. "You're still getting messages?" Kate frowned deeply. "What messages?" Before she could answer, another alert interrupted them. SEVERE WEATHER ESCALATION DETECTED. VOID STORM ACTIVITY RISING IN UPPER DISTRICTS. This time, even the wealthy floating platforms in the sky above the city activated their massive shield barriers, and glowing aircraft were evacuating civilians further inside the skyscrapers. The rich themselves looked scared, and the stranger looked up at the dark clouds gathering above Elysium. "We need shelter now." Then, suddenly, screaming erupted farther down the street. "THEY'RE RAIDING THE TUNNELS!" Several survivors sprinted through the rain toward them while drones chased overhead, firing red tracking lasers across the flooded roads. Behind them, armoured enforcers advanced slowly through the streets, executing players one after another. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. PLAYER GUEST551 HAS BEEN TERMINATED. LEVEL ONE REASSIGNMENT INITIATED. PLAYER DANTE HAS BEEN TERMINATED. LEVEL ONE REASSIGNMENT INITIATED. PLAYER RHEA21 HAS BEEN DETAINED FOR ENFORCER PROCESSING. Kate froze. "Enforcer processing…?" The stranger immediately grabbed her arm. "You don't want to know." And then, all the lights in the entire area started flashing rapidly three times in a row, the cars slowed down, the drones stopped mid-air, and the advertisements showed static. Every screen throughout Elysium changed simultaneously. WARNING: REALITY INSTABILITY DETECTED. The stranger's expression changed instantly, and for the first time since entering Elysium, he looked genuinely afraid. "No…" he whispered. Far above the city, the crimson clouds slowly split apart, revealing a massive, glowing fracture stretching across the sky itself, as if reality were starting to tear open. Black energy pulsed outward throughout the clouds like veins, while holograms throughout the skyline glitched violently. WARNING: REALITY INSTABILITY DETECTED. PLEASE REMAIN CALM. Even the system voice sounded distorted now. "What the hell is THAT?!" Kate shouted. No response came. Even the civilians looked terrified now. Civiliansran inside their homes as the business centers closed up behind protective shields. Drones left the lower sections for good, flying up to the higher platform sections. Then suddenly— SCREEEEEEEEEECH. The sound echoed throughout the city, blurring Zamora's vision. For a moment of pure horror, she could see something standing in the fracture that existed over Elysium, looking right at her. It disappeared entirely after that, leaving her shocked and confused. "What did you see?" Before she could answer, every screen throughout the district changed again. EMERGENCY EVENT ACTIVE. VOID STORM DESCENDING INTO LOWER DISTRICTS. ALL CITIZENS SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. ALL BLACK MARKET ACTIVITIES TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED. That message alone caused panic. Masked civilians disappeared into underground entrances while hidden weapon vendors abandoned entire streets within seconds. "Why does that matter?" Kate asked. The stranger slowly looked toward the fracture above the city. "Because if the black market is shutting down…" His expression darkened. "…then something worse is coming." Suddenly, all the lights in Elysium went off simultaneously, and darkness engulfed the city immediately. Screams were heard from people all around the streets, and for the first time since entering Level Two…Elysium lost its feeling of control. UPPER DISTRICT EVACUATION FAILED. MULTIPLE ENFORCER SIGNALS LOST. SYSTEM STABILITY FALLING BELOW SAFE PARAMETERS. Kate's voice started shaking. "This isn't supposed to happen, is it?" "No," the stranger whispered. And that terrified Zamora more than anything else because until now, he had acted like Elysium was predictable. Then every phone throughout the city vibrated simultaneously. SURVIVE UNTIL MORNING. The normal seven-day timer vanished instantly afterward. Far-off explosions echoed throughout the city, while sirens blared across multiple districts simultaneously. UPPER DISTRICT ACCESS TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED. VOID STORM CONTAINMENT IN PROGRESS. The wealthy floating platforms, high above the city, sealed themselves off completely behind glowing barriers. "They're abandoning the lower districts…" Kate whispered. "Move," the stranger snapped immediately. The streets had already changed completely; civilians disappeared indoors, shops were sealed shut, and security drones retreated upward. But the players left outside? They were becoming desperate. Several survivors rushed past, carrying stolen supplies, while others fought over access to shelter cards and food packs. "No! That's mine!" "I paid for it!" "You're dead if you stay out here anyway!" BOOM. A gunshot echoed through the darkness, and nobody even reacted anymore, as Elysium was purging itself, and then her phone vibrated again. EMERGENCY MISSION AVAILABLE. SURVIVE UNTIL MORNING. REWARD: UNKNOWN. WARNING: LOWER DISTRICT SURVIVAL RATE DROPPING RAPIDLY. Around them, survivor phones flashed nonstop. SAFEHOUSE FULL. CURFEW SHELTERS LOCKED. MISSION FAILURE DETECTED. CREDIT TRANSFER DENIED. "We're running out of options," the stranger muttered while scanning nearby buildings desperately. Then suddenly Kate pointed farther down the flooded street. "There!" A glowing neon sign flickered weakly through the darkness ahead. UNDERCITY ACCESS. Unlike every other building around them, its doors were still open. But immediately, something didn't seem right. People were entering, but nobody was coming back out. The stranger stopped instantly. "No." Kate looked confused. "What?" "We're not going in there." He said coldly "Why not?!" Before he could answer, another alert echoed throughout the city MULTIPLE SURVIVORS MISSING IN LOWER DISTRICT TUNNELS. INVESTIGATION PENDING. "That's why," the stranger said quietly. Then, suddenly, screaming erupted farther down the street. "ENFORCERS!" A massive crowd of survivors flooded toward the tunnel entrance in complete panic while red drone lights scanned across the streets behind them. "Move!" "They're killing everyone!" Many others ran into her, forcing her sideways into the rain-soaked road when people rushed to enter the tunnel. "ZAMORA!" Kate screamed. Gunfire erupted nearby. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. The bodies fell immediately on the streets as the rest of the survivors crawled into the tunnel before it was closed. The mysterious person caught Kate before she could fall into the tunnel, but more survivors ran between her and Zamora. A survivor suddenly grabbed her arm desperately. "HELP ME—" TARGET IDENTIFIED. A drone laser immediately locked onto the man's chest, and she shoved him away just as the shot was fired. BOOM. The body collapsed beside her, and then her phone vibrated one final time. PLAYER GUEST223 HAS BEEN TERMINATED. LEVEL ONE REASSIGNMENT INITIATED. BLACK MARKET ACCESS: 00:00:59 REMAINING. The screen glitched wildly before a final message appeared. DISTRICT 9 ACCESS GRANTED. COME ALONE. She looked desperately through the chaos searching for Kate and the stranger, but the streets had become a nightmare of smoke, gunfire, acid rain and fleeing survivors. She looked around, but they were gone, and the tunnel doors were closing.
