Caught in the Crossfire

The sound of gunfire echoed across the harbor. People screamed and scattered in every direction. Elena's heart hammered violently against her ribs as she crouched behind the vehicle with Alessandro. She had never experienced anything like this before. A few days ago, her biggest concern had been meeting project deadlines and paying rent on time. Now bullets were flying overhead. And somehow she was caught in the middle of a mafia war. Another shot rang out. Alessandro immediately pulled her closer to the vehicle. "Stay down." His voice was calm. Too calm. As if danger was something he dealt with every day. Maybe it was. Elena watched him peek around the side of the car. His expression remained focused. Cold. Calculating. The playful man from lunch had vanished. This Alessandro looked dangerous. Terrifying. Yet somehow she felt safer beside him than anywhere else. "Who are they?" she whispered. Alessandro didn't look away from the street. "I don't know yet." The answer worried her even more. If Alessandro didn't know who was attacking them, then the situation was worse than she imagined. Several black SUVs blocked the road ahead. Armed men emerged. Their faces hidden. Their weapons visible. Elena's stomach twisted. One thing became painfully clear. They weren't here by accident. Someone wanted Alessandro dead. Or perhaps... someone wanted her. The thought sent a chill through her body. Alessandro's phone buzzed. He answered immediately. "Marco." A pause. Then Alessandro's expression darkened. "Are you sure?" Another pause. His eyes shifted toward Elena. Something about that look made her nervous. Very nervous. "What?" she asked. Alessandro ended the call. For a moment he seemed to debate whether to tell her. Then he sighed. "The attack wasn't meant for me." Elena stared. "What?" "They were tracking you." The world stopped. Her. Not Alessandro. Not the powerful Moretti heir. Her. "That's impossible." "I wish it were." Elena felt sick. Nothing made sense anymore. Why would anyone target her? She wasn't involved in the mafia. She barely understood what was happening. Yet somehow strangers were willing to kill for information connected to her family. The realization terrified her. Alessandro noticed. His expression softened slightly. "Look at me." Elena forced herself to meet his eyes. "You are going to be okay." For some reason she believed him. Not because the situation was safe. Not because she wasn't afraid. But because Alessandro sounded absolutely certain. As if protecting her wasn't a choice. It was a promise. --- Minutes later, backup arrived. Moretti security vehicles surrounded the area. The attackers quickly retreated. Within moments they disappeared into the city. The danger had passed. For now. Alessandro escorted Elena into one of the vehicles. She sat silently during the drive. Her thoughts raced. Questions piled upon questions. The truth about her family. The De Lucas. The attack. Alessandro. Nothing felt real anymore. Eventually she realized the vehicle wasn't heading toward her apartment. "Where are we going?" "My estate." Elena blinked. "What?" "You can't go home." "I absolutely can." "No." The single word carried enough authority to stop any argument. Unfortunately for Alessandro, Elena wasn't most people. "Watch me." His lips twitched. A hint of amusement. "You nearly got kidnapped an hour ago." "I can take care of myself." "Clearly." Elena glared at him. He looked completely unapologetic. A few seconds later she looked away first. Mostly because she hated how attractive he looked when he was winning an argument. --- The Moretti estate was unlike anything Elena had ever seen. Massive iron gates. Beautiful gardens. A mansion that looked straight out of a movie. She stared through the vehicle window. "You're kidding." Alessandro looked up. "What?" "You live here?" "Yes." "You live like a king." "I live like someone who pays too many taxes." Elena laughed despite herself. The sound surprised both of them. For a brief moment, the tension disappeared. Then reality returned. Guards stood everywhere. Security cameras monitored every entrance. The entire property looked like a fortress. Which meant Alessandro genuinely believed she was in danger. The thought made her uneasy. Very uneasy. --- That evening Elena was given a guest room larger than her entire apartment. She stood near the balcony doors staring at the moonlit gardens below. Sleep felt impossible. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. She opened the door. Alessandro stood outside. For a moment neither spoke. The silence felt strangely intimate. "I wanted to check on you." "I'm alive." A small smile appeared. "That's not what I asked." Elena hesitated. The truth was she felt overwhelmed. Confused. Scared. And strangely comforted by his presence. "I'm trying to process everything." His expression softened. "Understandable." They stepped onto the balcony. The night air felt cool against her skin. Below them the gardens glowed beneath silver moonlight. For a while they simply stood there. No arguments. No family wars. No secrets. Just silence. Comfortable silence. Eventually Elena spoke. "Were you always part of this life?" Alessandro stared into the darkness. "Yes." "Did you ever want something different?" A shadow crossed his face. For the first time she saw genuine sadness. "Every day." The answer surprised her. She had expected confidence. Certainty. Not regret. "What would you have done?" He smiled faintly. "When I was younger?" "Yes." "I wanted to travel." Elena blinked. "That's it?" "That's it." She laughed. "The terrifying Alessandro Moretti dreamed of becoming a tourist?" "Apparently." For the first time that night, he laughed too. The sound was warm. Unexpected. Dangerously charming. Elena found herself staring. Alessandro noticed. Their eyes met. Neither looked away. The world suddenly felt smaller. Quieter. The distance between them seemed to disappear. Elena became painfully aware of everything. The night air. His voice. The way he looked at her. Not like an enemy. Not like a responsibility. Like a woman. Her heartbeat accelerated. Alessandro's expression changed. Something deeper appeared in his eyes. Something neither of them wanted to name. Because naming it would make it real. And reality was complicated enough already. A phone rang inside the room. The moment shattered instantly. Both stepped back. The spell broken. Alessandro answered. Within seconds his face darkened. "What happened?" Elena's stomach dropped. Bad news. Again. He listened carefully. Then ended the call. "What is it?" Alessandro looked at her. His jaw tightened. "The De Lucas have made their move." Fear crept through her chest. "What does that mean?" "It means the war is no longer hiding." The silence that followed felt heavy. Dangerous. Inevitable. Then Alessandro revealed the final piece of news. "They've announced a gathering." "A gathering?" "A meeting between families." Elena frowned. "And?" Alessandro's eyes locked onto hers. "They specifically requested your presence." A chill swept through her body. "Why?" Alessandro's expression remained unreadable. "That's exactly what I intend to find out." But deep inside... both of them feared the answer. Because every secret surrounding Elena seemed to lead back to one terrifying possibility. She wasn't merely connected to the war. She might be the reason it started. To be continued....
