3 Two SquadI lie awake listening hard to every single sound. I am too scared to sleep. I've never been this afraid of anything, and I really don't know what it is I'm afraid of. I keep thinking if I am going to get killed tonight I want to go fast—I want to go to sleep so that I'll die asleep and not have time to be more scared than I am now. I constantly roll over trying to get comfortable. I leave my boots on, and they make my feet feel as if they're in casts. I begin to breathe too fast and have to sit up on my ammo-crate bed to get a deep breath. It is stuffy. There are animal sounds near my head. Rats? There are big noises in the distance, sounds of big rounds landing and, once in a while, the scary little pop of hand-held illumination going up on our perimeter. I can hear the guards
