Simon, dressed in his riding clothes, bent over the figure of Alice on the floor. He shook her gently. "Alice? Can you hear me?" She started to come round slowly. He helped her up. Toby watched anxiously. He seemed like himself again: a caring, lovable little boy. "Is Mum okay?" he asked. "Did I spill my milk?" He looked troubled and contrite. "Watch TV for a bit, Toby," Simon suggested. "Don"t worry. I"ll take care of your mum." Toby obediently turned on the TV. He stood in front of it, staring at the screen with obvious lack of interest. Simon helped Alice towards the door. "It"s dreadfully stuffy in here. Let"s get you some fresh air." They went outside and sat on the garden seat. By now Alice was in tears.
