The street lights were coming on as Red approached the bridge. He wondered if he would have enough time. Would there be sufficient daylight to see detail on the river? But, if there was too much light, he might be spotted. And he couldn"t let that happen. He was relieved to see that the bridge was deserted. Everyone was in the snooker club, the cinema or the pubs. As he crossed the bridge he could hear the muffled thunder of the flood water raging underneath. On the far side he dismounted and lifted the Carlton over the stile at the start of the riverside path. The path followed the southern bank of the river upstream to the east of the town. It was darker on the path away from the streetlights, but not too dark to see. He pulled the cap down and his collar up and hoped if he met someone
