He held her a while in the alley across from the house. When she seemed to be more relaxed he reluctantly let her go indoors.

He lay on his bed trying to fit together the order of events from the day of the April flood. He relived the chase of Raggy through the flooded fields to the moment when their quarry turned to face them, crying no, no, no! in fear and panic. But something struck him as odd. He replayed the final frames of the chase over and over, image by chilling image; he hadn"t had the nerve to do it before. But eventually he was sure:
