themAfter a while she left the bandstand. Her step was firm and she felt strong. She walked to the railway station and caught the next train back to the town. * * * Red, his face still swollen and bruised, delivered papers to the terraced houses below St Margaret"s church. It began to rain, just a few scattered drops at first, then the drops grew bigger and more frequent. He looked at the sky. It was heavily overcast, with the lower edges of the clouds obscuring the upper slopes of the hillsides to the north and west of the town. There was no doubt a storm was coming.
