Chapter 5: Getting to know each other.
Alex’s POV
I made breakfast for the both of us and I stole glances at her as she ate her food. She was no doubt the most beautiful person I had ever seen and I wished we had met under different circumstances.
“What?” She asked in amusement when she caught me staring at her.
“Nothing,” I said and she laughed. I knew she was hiding something but I didn't know what it was. At first, I suspected she was responsible for the murders but I soon discovered that that was impossible. Then I began to suspect that she was a werewolf and although some things pointed to that, there were other factors that didn't add up.
The wolfsbane issue was still bothering me and I was yet to come to my conclusion on it. In all the books and information I had on supernatural creatures and substances, there was nothing anywhere that talked about the diluted version of wolfsbane that she mentioned. Until I did more research, I had to be more watchful of her and hope that she would slip up one day.
“How long have you been in this town?” She asked me between mouthfuls of pancakes.
“Almost five years now. I moved here from New Orleans where I had been living all my life.”
“Why the move?”
“I got tired of city life and I also couldn't continue living in the city if I was going to continue seeing things that would keep reminding me of my sister. The house became too much for me to bear one day and I just packed up and left without looking back.”
She dropped her fork and looked at me with sympathy. “Sorry about that.”
“It's fine,” I said, waving my arm. “I was foolish to think that I could be somewhere and not remember my sister every time. I left the city to avoid anything that was werewolf related and look at me now.”
“Have there been anything relating to werewolves before these murders?” She asked.
“Yes,” I answered. “ A lot actually. There have been reports of werewolves sightings over the years but there was never anything concrete. There was also a time when a man got lost in the woods. He was found a few days later and he kept on swearing that he had been abducted by werewolves. I and other cops searched for days but we did not find anything. The man eventually kept his mouth shut and he left town a few months ago.”
“I can't even imagine. Poor guy,” She said.
“What? You believe he was really abducted by werewolves?”
“I don't know. It's a possibility. But then it doesn't make sense that they would let him go after uncovering their secret.”
“My point exactly.” I ate the last of my pancakes and rose from my chair. She was also done with hers so I grabbed her plate along with mine and I heard her following me as I walked into the kitchen. “How long do you plan on staying in town?”
She leaned against the counter and folded her arms. “I can't say yet. I am still trying to see if I am going to enjoy my stay or not. I have lived in four different towns now and this is the best one so far. I hope it stays that way.”
“And if it doesn't?”
“Onto the next then. I am kind of a snob when it comes to choosing a place to settle down.”
“I see,” I said. I dumped the plates in the sink and turned to face her. “Where are you from?”
“New Orleans,” she replied simply.
“Come on. Be serious.”
“I am.” The look on her face confirmed that and I chuckled.
“What a coincidence.”
“I only stayed there for my early childhood days though. After the death of my parents, I moved to Lafayette where I stayed with an aunt of mine for years before I was finally old enough to live on my own.”
“You've moved around a lot,” I commented.
“Yes, and I'm used to that kind of life. Even if I do enjoy this town, there is a possibility that I might be itching to move in three years or so.”
“Have you ever thought of settling down?” I asked. “Like settling down fully and starting a family.” I walked away from the sink and beckoned to her as I headed towards the doorway.
“No. Not really,” she replied as we went to the living room. I settled onto the long couch and she did the same but a few meters away from me. “I never really dated for a long while either. My last boyfriend was in the town I visited before the last one and that was a few months ago.”
“So you are a loner of sorts?”
“Something like that. How about you?”
“I had someone I was going to marry last year. It later didn't work out and we ended things. I heard she is married with two kids now.”
“Ouch,” she said.
“No, no,” I said, bursting into laughter. “It's nothing like that. I am actually happy for her and we ended things on good terms so I am all good.”
She suddenly remembered something and she jerked forward. “Oh my God.”
“What is that?”
“Josie. The bookstore. Oh, God.” She jumped to her feet.
“Relax,” I said, laughing at her reaction. “I called Josie when you passed out and she said it was okay for you to take the day off.”
“You really went all the way to make sure you could keep me in your house, didn't you?”
“If you say so,” I said and we laughed. I heard my phone ringing and I rose from the chair. I went to retrieve it from the bedroom and I answered the call as I headed back to the living room.
“Yeah?” I said into the phone.
“Detective, Keller speaking.”
“What is it, Keller? Have you guys found something?”
“There has been another murder,” he announced and the words felt like a bomb to my ears.
