Chapter 4: Whispers of Destiny

667 Words
The next morning, Lena woke to the pale winter sun filtering through her blinds, her mind already tangled in the events of the night before. Sleep had been elusive, her dreams filled with fragments of mistletoe, stormy gray eyes, and the weight of words she didn’t fully understand. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, pulling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the screen, half expecting another message from the triplets. Instead, it was a text from her best friend, Mia. Mia: Okay, spill. WHAT happened last night? Lena groaned, burying her face in her pillow. Of course, Mia had heard about it. How could she not? Gossip spread through their high school like wildfire, and being kissed by the Alpha triplets under the mistletoe was practically gasoline on the flames. Reluctantly, Lena typed back. Lena: Can we talk later? It’s… complicated. The response came almost immediately. Mia: Complicated?! Girl, you’re the talk of the pack! Everyone is losing their minds. Are you okay? Lena hesitated. Was she okay? She wasn’t sure how to answer that. Lena: I don’t know. Just give me some time, okay? Mia didn’t reply right away, and Lena let out a sigh of relief. She wasn’t ready to face the endless questions or the weight of everyone’s curiosity. After forcing herself out of bed, Lena shuffled downstairs to find her mom sitting at the kitchen table, sipping coffee and flipping through a recipe book. The smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls filled the air, but Lena’s appetite was nowhere to be found. “Morning,” her mom said, glancing up. “You seemed a little off last night. Are you feeling okay?” “I’m fine,” Lena lied, grabbing a mug and pouring herself some coffee. Her mom frowned, clearly unconvinced. “You know you can talk to me, right? If something happened at the party…” “Nothing happened,” Lena interrupted, her tone sharper than she intended. “I just— It was a long night.” Her mom studied her for a moment before nodding slowly. “All right. But if you change your mind, I’m here.” Lena mumbled a thanks and retreated back to her room, the coffee warming her hands but doing little to soothe the storm inside her. She had barely closed the door when her phone buzzed again. This time, it was Ryker. Ryker: Morning. Did you sleep? She stared at the message, her heart skipping a beat. It was such a simple question, but coming from him, it carried a weight she couldn’t ignore. Lena: Not really. The response came almost instantly. Ryker: Figured as much. Want to talk? Lena hesitated. Part of her wanted to shut him out, to pretend none of this was happening. But another part—a curious, reckless part—wanted answers. Lena: Why me? There was a pause before his reply. Ryker: You’re our mate, Lena. It’s not something we chose; it’s something we feel. The bond is undeniable. Undeniable. The word echoed in her mind, stirring something she couldn’t quite name. Another message popped up, this time from Ryder. Ryder: Hey, don’t let Ryker get all serious on you. He’s bad at explaining this stuff. Just know we’re here for you, okay? And then River: River: You’re probably overthinking everything. Don’t. We’ll figure it out together. Lena stared at the messages, her chest tightening. She didn’t know what to think or feel, but one thing was clear: they weren’t going to let this go. Her phone buzzed again, and this time it was Mia. Mia: I’m coming over. You can’t avoid me forever. Lena sighed, setting her phone down. She wasn’t ready to face Mia, the triplets, or the weight of the bond they claimed to share. But as much as she wanted to run from it all, she knew deep down there was no escaping it. Her life had changed. And whether she liked it or not, destiny had chosen a path for her.
