Midnight Arrival

2353 Words
The car rolled to a halt just past midnight, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and old stone. Viktor stepped out into the cool night, stretching his legs after the long, silent journey. The towering gates of SEC loomed ahead, wrapped in iron filigree and ancient symbols that glowed faintly in the moonlight. Beyond them, the sprawling campus stretched out in shadow and mist, its buildings a curious blend of modern towers and weathered stone structures. A figure emerged from the gatehouse, their silhouette tall and slender. As they approached, Viktor could see they wore a dark robe embroidered with the SEC emblem — a symbol he was quickly beginning to associate with mystery and power. The figure pushed back their hood, revealing a woman with silver-streaked hair tied neatly in a braid, her sharp gaze piercing. "Viktor Night?" she asked, her voice carrying a soft but unmistakable authority. “Yes,” he replied, feeling a thrill as she looked at him. “I’m Professor Elara Drayke, Head of Orientation. Welcome to SEC,” she said, nodding toward the path behind her. “Follow me. You’ve arrived at an unusual hour, so we’ll need to expedite a few things. It seems your journey took longer than expected.” She led him through winding paths lined with lamps that flickered with an eerie blue flame, casting an otherworldly glow over the campus. As they walked, Viktor caught glimpses of students wandering between buildings, some with books floating beside them, others practicing levitation or quietly casting spells. Every so often, he felt a surge of magical energy pass through him, making the ring on his finger warm slightly. “The supernatural world is vast,” Professor Drayke said as they crossed a small bridge over a silver-lit stream, “and SEC is a hub for all manner of beings. You’ll find that no one’s quite what they seem here.” She glanced at him, eyes thoughtful. “Though I suspect you’re already familiar with that.” Viktor only nodded, feeling the weight of her gaze. Professor Drayke brought him to a large stone building with arched windows and heavy oak doors. “This is the Orientation Hall. Tonight, you’ll receive a few essentials — your class schedule, dorm assignment, and a guidebook,” she explained. “In the morning, you’ll join the rest of the first-years for a formal welcome. Now, wait here.” She left him in the hall’s shadowy foyer, and Viktor took a moment to look around. The walls were lined with tapestries depicting past SEC graduates and historic moments in the supernatural world, each woven in threads that seemed to shift colors. He felt like he was standing at the edge of something monumental, yet also deeply personal. SEC wasn’t just a school — it was a gateway to a world he’d only glimpsed. A few minutes later, Professor Drayke returned, handing him a leather-bound book and a small, metallic medallion. The book bore the title Guide to SEC: The Essential Manual, while the medallion was engraved with his initials and the SEC emblem. “That medallion will serve as your student identification and unlock certain areas of the campus,” she explained. “Your room is in Dorm Hall Seven, Room 203. There, you’ll find your roommate — if they’ve managed to stay awake this late.” She gave him a rare, almost amused look. With a nod, Viktor took his things and followed the path to Dorm Hall Seven, feeling the weight of new beginnings pressing down on him. Dorm Hall Seven was nestled on the edge of campus, close to the forest that bordered the school grounds. As Viktor walked through its dimly lit halls, he noticed the occasional flash of magic from beneath closed doors, giving him a brief glimpse of the abilities others possessed. When he reached Room 203, he hesitated. The thought of sharing his space with someone else was new and strange to him, and he felt a brief pang of anxiety. But he squared his shoulders and pushed the door open. Inside, a tall, wiry figure was sprawled out on the bed nearest the window, reading by the faint glow of a levitating orb. The boy looked up as Viktor entered, eyes widening slightly before a grin spread across his face. “Ah, the infamous Viktor Night! Welcome to the SEC dorms!” The boy swung himself upright, extending a hand. “I’m Kai Frostbite. They said you’d be showing up eventually.” Viktor shook his hand, eyeing his new roommate with curiosity. Kai’s hair was a striking platinum blonde, his eyes a vivid green that seemed to almost shimmer in the low light. He wore a long, hooded cloak over simple clothes, and there was a mischievous energy to him that Viktor couldn’t ignore. “Kai’s a Warlock, by the way,” came a voice from the corner. Viktor turned to see a petite girl perched cross-legged on his bed, completely at ease. Her hair was jet black, with streaks of dark purple, and her skin held a warm, olive tone. She wore fingerless gloves and had a crystal-studded choker around her neck that sparkled faintly. “Don’t worry, I’m not breaking in,” she added with a grin, noticing Viktor’s surprise. “I’m Kaila Frostbite, a Shifter. Just here to make sure Kai doesn’t give you the wrong impression about the SEC.” She winked at Kai, who scoffed in mock offense. “We’ll be in a few of the same classes, Viktor,” she continued. “It’s rare we get someone with your… reputation, so expect people to be curious.” Curious was an understatement, he quickly realized. SEC(Supernatural Education Coalition) wasn’t like St. Jude’s; it was filled with creatures and people who thrived on mystery and power, and Viktor felt eyes on him everywhere he went. Even Kai and Kaila, friendly as they seemed, couldn’t hide their fascination. But despite the attention, Viktor found himself settling in faster than he’d expected, drawn in by their welcoming energy. They talked late into the night, sharing stories about their strange lives and unusual abilities. Kai demonstrated his minor spellwork, creating shimmering illusions, while Kaila shifted her form into a small, sleek fox, darting around the room with a playful yip. As the night wore on, Viktor began to feel something he hadn’t experienced in years — belonging. Here, he wasn’t just the outcast or the orphan; he was one of them, a newcomer in a world of shadows and secrets. Finally, as they all drifted to sleep, Viktor lay awake, the weight of the ring on his finger grounding him. Tomorrow, his journey at SEC would truly begin, and with it, the answers he had been seeking his entire life. The morning sunlight poured through the tall, arched windows of Dorm Hall Seven as Viktor slipped out of bed, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. He dressed quickly, tossing on his dark jacket and grabbing the small medallion from his nightstand. The scent of breakfast drifting down the hall led him out of the dormitory and toward the canteen, where students were already gathering in clusters, chatting and laughing. The canteen was a whirlwind of supernatural variety. Vampires, Werewolves, Warlocks, and Shifters mingled with ease, their conversations punctuated by sparks of magic or bursts of laughter. Viktor scanned the room for familiar faces, spotting Kai and Kaila waving him over to a table near the back. “Morning, Shadow-Born,” Kai greeted with a grin, earning a smirk from Viktor at the nickname. “Don’t mind him,” Kaila said with an eye-roll as Viktor sat down. “He just likes to give people names.” “Better to have one than none,” Kai retorted with a laugh. “Besides, Shadow-Born has a nice ring to it.” They ate quickly, Viktor savoring the warm food — a welcome change from the meager meals back at the orphanage. He couldn’t help but notice the glances he was getting from nearby students, their expressions a mix of curiosity and caution. Word had spread fast about him, it seemed. After breakfast, a chime echoed through the hall, and students began to file out toward the assembly hall for the official orientation. Kai and Kaila led the way, guiding Viktor to the sprawling room filled with rows of seats and a raised platform at the front. The room buzzed with anticipation as students settled in, and soon Professor Elara Drayke, Head of Orientation, took the stage, her sharp gaze sweeping across the gathered crowd. “Welcome to SEC(Supernatural Education Coalition), new students,” she began, her voice carrying an air of authority. “Today marks the beginning of your journey in understanding not only your supernatural gifts but the roles you are to play in a world that needs balance between the seen and the unseen.” A quiet fell over the room as she continued, “This morning, you’ll receive an introduction to the year’s syllabus and the classes you’ll be taking. But first, you will participate in a General Evaluation, which will help determine your affinities, abilities, and, for some of you, your creature heritage.” Viktor stiffened slightly at the mention of heritage, a word that echoed uncomfortably in his mind. For as long as he could remember, his heritage had been a mystery, and being labeled a “halfling” had only added to his isolation. Professor Drayke went on, “The General Evaluation is essential. Many of you already know what you are and where you come from. However, there are those among you whose origins may not be as clear. This evaluation will help identify not only your affinity but the power your bloodline carries.” Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Viktor noticed several students glance at him, their eyes widening as if they’d heard rumors about his unique background. But he forced himself to keep his gaze fixed on Professor Drayke. “In a few moments, you’ll each be assigned to a small group. After the evaluation, you’ll attend your first classes, beginning with Magical Foundations and Defense. These courses are mandatory for all new students.” She raised a hand, and shimmering lists began to appear in the air, the names of each student grouped together in glowing letters. Viktor scanned the floating names, searching for his own, and his heart skipped when he found it listed with Kai and Kaila. “Looks like we’re sticking together,” Kai whispered with a grin, clapping Viktor on the shoulder. “Lucky us,” Kaila added with a wink, her violet-streaked eyes glinting with amusement. Professor Drayke raised her hands to silence the crowd. “Each group will follow their assigned mentor to the evaluation chambers. This will be a physical and mental test of your abilities, so prepare yourselves accordingly.” A tall figure stepped forward to lead Viktor’s group — a stern-faced instructor with piercing dark eyes who introduced himself as Professor Ryan Vale. He gave them a curt nod and gestured for them to follow. The group walked through winding hallways, eventually reaching a large chamber with stone walls covered in mystical runes and symbols that glowed faintly. “Stand in a line, please,” Professor Vale instructed, his voice sharp. “One at a time, you’ll each step into the evaluation circle. This circle will help us assess your magical and supernatural affinities. It may even reveal any hidden heritage.” Kai went first, stepping confidently into the circle. As he did, the symbols on the walls glowed a brilliant shade of emerald, matching the green shimmer in Kai’s eyes. The air around him pulsed, and faint sparks crackled at his fingertips. “A clear affinity for spellcraft,” Professor Vale noted, nodding approvingly. “You also possess traces of powerful Warlock heritage. Very promising.” Kaila stepped up next. As she entered the circle, her form shimmered and flickered, the runes shifting to a violet hue that matched the streaks in her hair. In a fluid motion, she morphed into her fox form, her eyes gleaming with intelligence before shifting back. “A Shifter, with traces of fae blood,” Professor Vale observed. “Well attuned to your abilities, Miss Kaila.” Then it was Viktor’s turn. He felt a knot form in his stomach as he stepped into the circle. The runes flared to life, shifting through shades of pure white and inky black, swirling and intensifying. The air grew dense with energy as two opposing forces emerged — Light and Darkness — each flickering, almost as if they were locked in some silent struggle. An intense silence filled the chamber as Viktor’s powers continued to manifest. His eyes took on a faint red glow, and he felt his canines sharpen and lengthen, his fingers instinctively curling into claw-like forms. A whisper of his vampire heritage was unmistakable, yet there was something else, something powerful and pure. Professor Vale’s face tightened as the god runes on the chamber walls lit up with a fierce silver radiance. Viktor felt the divine presence coursing through him, strong and undeniable. But Vale’s expression grew troubled as the light from the god runes pulsed, almost resisting the dark energy radiating from Viktor. “Interesting…” Professor Vale murmured, though his eyes betrayed a deeper concern. He observed Viktor intently, as if trying to decipher something hidden. “A dual affinity — Light and Darkness. This combination is… exceptionally rare.” Viktor stepped out of the circle, uneasy and uncertain. Something about the evaluation had unsettled Vale, and Viktor couldn’t shake the feeling that his powers carried implications that he didn’t yet understand. As they left the chamber, Viktor exchanged a glance with Kai and Kaila, feeling a strange mix of relief and unease. He didn’t know what his powers meant or what his heritage held, but one thing was clear: his journey at SEC was only the beginning, and the mysteries surrounding his origin were more complex than he’d ever imagined.
