Chapter 3

“Are you being serious right now, Steph?” Come on, he is my man, take your eyes off him, girl!!. I said to Stephanie. Then Stephanie whispered to me, saying, “Girl, would you be free tonight?” “Free tonight? Yes, I will, but why are you asking?” I said out of curiosity. “Girl, if you would be free tonight, then that would be great because I’m hanging out with my new man tonight, and I would love for you to join me. Maybe you will find a new Prince Charming there.” Stephanie said. “Prince Charming? Are you kidding me right now? I thought I told you already that I have a man and I’m legally and happily married to him!!” I said. “Well, you will drop me off at the bus station because I didn’t come with my car today. Yes, I know you told me you’re married, but girl… your beloved cute husband is not here in the USA with you, instead he is far away from you. I mean, very far away from you, girl… You need to wake up and think straight.” Stephanie said. “You clearly know that in this generation, you can’t trust any man, What if he is cheating on you over there with some random lady?” Stephanie said. “I won’t come with you tonight or any day. Just go and have fun and enjoy your new man, okay?” I said to her. It was already 7:30 PM, the restaurant's closing hour, and it was time to go back home. I was so tired from cooking, I was really drained of energy, and yet I was getting ready to go home when Stephanie walked in. “Gurl, you really won’t go with me tonight?” Stephanie said to me. “No, sorry, I can’t,” I said to her . Then she went into the restroom, spent 10 minutes changing into a beautiful black elegant dress, and applied some makeup on her face while I was outside waiting for her to come out so I could drop her off at the bus station. Then she suddenly came out and said, “How do I look?” she asked. “Gurlll… you look like a queen; you look so beautiful,” I said to Stephanie . Then I teased her, saying, “Can I be your man for the night?” We laughed and went to the car. I dropped her off at the bus station and drove home. When I got home, I took a shower, had dinner, and went straight to bed. However, I couldn’t sleep. Even though my eyes were heavy, I just couldn’t sleep because my mind was replaying the conversation I had with Stephanie at the restaurant. I kept thinking about what she said regarding my husband cheating with some random girl. “Could he be cheating on me? No, he can’t be cheating.” I asked and said to myself. But I kept hearing voices in my head saying, “What if he is cheating on you or cheats on you over there in Syria? Then what?” Still, I tried to remain optimistic about everything, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the fact that I kept hearing this voice in my head telling me Paul would leave me for another girl in Syria. Then I tried calling the number he once used to reach out to me, but it wasn’t reachable or connecting. I had to try five times, but none of them went through. Then I closed my eyes and slept. The next morning, I woke up, brushed my teeth, ate some food, and then dressed for work. I looked at this picture, like always, and left for work. When I got to the restaurant, I tried calling the number again, but it wasn’t connecting. I tried several times, but it still didn’t connect. I tried calling his main line, but I remembered he told me his phone screen got cracked while he was in the barracks. With a sad face, I walked into the restaurant. Then James, the restaurant manager, noticed it and asked, “Why do you look so sad?” “I’m okay, I just had a bad morning today. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” I said. I got into the kitchen, and Stephanie noticed my sad face. She asked, “Girl, why are you sad now? Is it about Paul again? Baby girl, talk to me.” “Nothing,” I responded while trying to shift away from the question. “Girl, you know you can tell me anything. Just tell me, is it about Paul again?” But unfortunately, I couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Yes, it’s about Paul,” I said to her. “What is it this time? What is wrong? Tell me,” Stephanie asked. With a cracking voice, I said to her, “I don’t know, but I feel like Paul is cheating on me. My spirit tells me that he will leave me for another girl in Syria.” “But girl, trust me, I am trying to remain optimistic. I trust Paul, and I love him, and I don’t want to lose him to any girl.” “I understand you, Camila, but these days you can’t trust men. Hold on, have you tried calling him lately? Have you spoken to him since then?” she asked. “No, the thing is that he told me that in the barracks while on duty, they are restricted from using their mobile phones or accessories, and they only get to use their phones when off duty,” I said to Stephanie. “Whatever, girl. But what if he’s lying to you just to cover up so you won’t bother him or call him or even text him?” she said to me. “No, Stephanie, I actually asked about it, and I was told that in the barracks, soldiers are restricted from using their phones while on duty. They only get to use their phones when off duty, so of course, Paul is not lying.” I said. “Whatever, girl. But I think it’s time to link you up with a handsome and rich man for now. I mean, you need a man to keep you company, right?” Stephanie said and asked. “Yes, I do, but I want him to be Paul always,” I said to Stephanie.
