Chapter 4

1187 Words
Days passed, and I didn’t hear from him, he never called or texted to check up on me. I started feeling lonely, abandoned, and alone. One day, I saw on the news that a U.S. soldier in Syria had been to war, and most of the soldiers were brutally murdered, while some were taken and held captive. “Oh my God, I hope Paul, my husband, is safe and not among those who were killed or held captive!, My Lord, please protect my husband from any danger and keep him safe from any harm.” I said and prayed with my eyes closed and my hands joined together. While I was praying, my phone rang. I looked at the screen, and it was Stephanie calling. “Girl, have you heard the news? This is a disaster. I’m telling you, girl, I just hope your man is safe and not among those who were held captive, let alone killed.” Stephanie said to me. “Stephanie, I’m sure that my man is safe and alive for me. Nothing can happen to him. Nothing will ever happen to him. Please be positive for my sake, and thanks for your concern, but I’m sure he’s fine, so worry less,” I said to Stephanie. That same morning, according to the female news anchor, there was a man named Paul. Coincidentally, he worked with Paul, my husband; his full name is Paul Alexander. At first, I was in the kitchen when I heard the news anchor say, “A 34-year-old Paul was also among those who were murdered.” Then I rushed out immediately, my heart beating and pumping fast. I was really scared because I thought it was Paul, my husband. Then my phone rang again. I looked at the screen. It was Stephanie again. Stephanie said, “Girl, I was still watching the news, and I heard the news anchor say someone named Paul is among those who were murdered. Crazy thing is, he is also from the USA, but he works at the military base in Syria, and you know that’s where Paul, your husband, also works. They are both the same age.” “It can’t be Paul, I’m sure this is not Paul.” I said to her. While I was on the phone with Stephanie, suddenly the news anchor mentioned his full name, saying, “A 34-year-old Paul Alexander is among those who were killed,” and then they uploaded his picture on the TV. Luckily, it wasn’t my Paul. I gasped with relief and hope, with a smile on my face, but at the same time, I felt sad for those who lost their precious lives protecting others. “Girl, look at the news, it says Paul Alexander, not Paul Anderson.” I said to her “Girl, I was already scared for you because I thought it was Paul. I mean, Paul, your husband. Thank goodness it’s not what I was thinking. By the way, what are you doing?”Stephanie said to me “I was just in the kitchen making breakfast when I heard the news. I mean, I heard on the news that a guy named Paul is among those who were murdered. Then I rushed out immediately, but now I’m so relieved after hearing the news. However, I feel for the family of Paul Alexander and for the families of the soldiers who lost their precious lives too.” I said to Stephanie After that, I had breakfast and took a shower. I’m dressed for work. On my way to work, my car stopped and left me stranded. I tried calling my mechanic, but he wasn’t answering the phone, and I didn’t know what to do other than to keep trying to reach him, but his phone wasn’t connecting. Then suddenly, a man pulled over, hopped out, and said, “What’s wrong? Is there a problem with your car?” “By the way, my name is Robert Anthony,” he said. “I am Camila,” I replied, and then we shook hands. And we both said at the same time, “Nice to meet you.” “What’s wrong with your car, Camila?” Robert Anthony asked. “I don’t know, but I think my car has run out of battery because it suddenly stopped while I was driving to work.” I said to Anthony “Oh, you work?” he said to me. “Yes, I do work at a restaurant as a cook. Why do you seem so surprised to hear that I work?” I asked him. “Is there anything wrong with me working?” I asked him again. “No, it’s nothing. Just surprised that a beautiful woman like you is working, and that too as a restaurant cook? You need to relax and be taken care of,” Anthony asked and said to me. “Do you want to help me with my car, or what?” I asked him. “Oh, my bad. Yeah, I will be glad to help you out. I mean, I will be glad to help a beautiful lady like you out,” He said to me. Then Robert Anthony tried jump starting my car, but it didn’t work. Then he called his mechanic to come and work on my car. He arrived within 5 minutes and replaced my battery with Robert Anthony’s spare battery, and it worked. Afterward, I thanked him, and we shook hands again before I got into the car. “Have a nice day.” I said to him “You too, Camila. He said Hey, Camila…” he called out my name. “Yeah?” I answered “Would you love to hang out after work? It’s okay if you don’t, though,” he asked. “Uhm, yeah, sure, I guess so,” I said to him. “Really? Thanks,” Anthony said. “Yeah, sure, you’re welcome. It’s a pleasure,” I said to him. “We can meet up at Blue Moon Tavern Bar.” He said. “Oh, nice! I will be there tonight.” I said to him. Then I took his number so I could reach out to him when I got to the bar. I actually wanted to make him happy by agreeing to hang out with him tonight after work just to pay him back for the favor he did for me by helping get my car running. Then I got to work and told Stephanie everything that happened on my way to work. I asked her if it was good to hang out with Robert Anthony. “Girl, of course that’s good! Just hang out with him. I mean, just go with him and see how it goes, okay?” Stephanie said. “Okay, girl, but only as just a friend and nothing else.” I said. “Yeah, you’re going as a friend and nothing more. And don’t forget you’re married! If he tries to flirt with you, call me, I will deal with him for you,” she said jokingly.
