CHAPTER 31: THE WATCHER IN THE DARK That night, I didn’t sleep well. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw that car again, parked across the street, silent, unmoving, like it had a purpose I couldn’t understand yet. I kept telling myself it was nothing, just a neighbor or a visitor, but my instincts refused to settle. They had saved me too many times before for me to ignore them now. I lay beside Paul, listening to his steady breathing, wishing I could borrow his calm, but my mind wouldn’t stop racing. Every sound felt louder, every shadow deeper, every second stretched thin with unease. Sometime in the early hours of the morning, I got out of bed and walked quietly to the window. The house was still, wrapped in darkness, and the only light came from the faint glow of street lamps outside.
