Chapter 19 Shirley's Secret Revealed

694 Words
But Victoria remained calm and quiet. In the past, she had always longed to be their real daughter and felt sad about being just an adopted child. She had been used to being the family's adopted daughter for twenty years. She grew accustomed to keeping her distance from them and remembered that she didn't belong there. Her four brothers felt a pang in their hearts when they saw her reaction. Their lovely sister still... kept her distance from them and didn't forgive them! Shirley grew jealous and frightened when she saw her loving parents now focused on Victoria. Actually, at the age of ten, a distant relative of Sarah's had already told her that she wasn't the Smith family's real daughter. She bribed the relative with her pocket money to cover up the secret for her. She knew she had to keep this secret or she'd lose her place as the beloved daughter of the Smith family! She didn't want to be a humble adopted child like Victoria! From that moment on, she became even more jealous of Victoria. She made all the members of the Smith family stay away from her in case they discovered her secret! So, when they wanted to be near Victoria, she would get angry and pretend to be sick. That way, she could separate Victoria from them. But she had never expected a situation like this. The secret she had carefully guarded all these years was revealed! She glared at Victoria with anger and hatred. She desperately wanted to kill this woman! Meanwhile, Victoria turned to Shirley and, of course, could read the murderous intent on her face. But she only gave Shirley a smile, as if to say, "What's that about? Shirley, you're the outsider!" She had made a promise that she would take everything from her! Ward caught up and suggested, "Mom, now that we know Victoria is our real family, we should let her live with us. And Shirley..." I just kicked her out! They knew Shirley had been bullying Victoria for years. However, their parents hadn't acknowledged it. Shirley panicked and repeated her old trick: "Mom, Dad, my head hurts so much... I can't breathe!" Her actions brought Sharon and Walfred back. Sharon had cared for Shirley for over twenty years and had unconsciously developed a protective instinct. Seeing Shirley faint, she rushed to her side and hugged her tightly. Walfred hurried to get the maids to help her and intended to send her to the hospital. Victoria wasn't surprised to see this. Shirley was born weak. So, as soon as she showed any sign of weakness, everyone rushed to her, cared for her, and loved her. But when she felt unwell and had a fever, she could only suffer in her own room. She had to take care of herself and not disturb them because they would choose to take care of Shirley. Just now, she had already seen through her trick. She only wanted to curry favor, just like in the past. Once she said she felt uncomfortable and asked the family for attention, the family would always grant her wishes no matter what. The four brothers, too. They had seen Shirley pull that trick hundreds of times. Shirley took advantage of their parents and got their attention, and they had grown accustomed to it. They were going to comfort Victoria and promise to kick Shirley out as soon as possible! "Vic..." But Victoria showed no emotion and remained calm. This had happened so many times before. So she decided to leave. "I have business to attend to. I'll go back home." Without hesitation, she turned and walked away. Did they really regret it? Perhaps they did, a little. But that wasn't enough! Seeing Shirley getting all the attention and being sent to the hospital, the four siblings grit their teeth. What a lovely "sister"! They would tolerate her only because she could keep their mother company and be useful to them. But now their real sister had returned and wouldn't give everything back! They were determined to drive her away. They would get Victoria back and protect her from any harm.
