A perfect evening

Seryna As the music resumed and couples returned to the dance floor, I lingered near the dais, my fingers still tingling from Caius’s touch and my heart pounding from the whirlwind of the night. The chandeliers above sparkled like stardust, casting shifting halos across the marble floor, and the warm scent of spiced wine and enchanted roses drifted through the air. My friends waved me over, their faces radiant with pride and joy, but I stood still for a breath longer. The King’s words echoed in my mind, and the weight of the ring on my finger felt like a seal pressed onto the parchment of my fate. Around me, voices hummed—curious, reverent, and a few cloaked in envy. The King's declaration had done more than inspire awe—it had shifted the atmosphere, stirred conversations that would ripple through the capital for weeks to come. When I finally stepped down from the platform, my heel caught slightly on the gleaming floor, but Maria was there, steady as ever. Her hand found mine, grounding me. I saw the flicker of emotion in her eyes—pride, disbelief, and something tender. "You've come a long way, Seryna," she said quietly, guiding me away from the platform with gentle poise. I smiled, dazed. “I still feel like I’m dreaming. Everything’s changing so fast.” “That’s what happens when fate finally catches up,” Maria said, her voice soft but firm. “Come on. Your friends look ready to smother you in questions.” Before we could move, the servant who had driven us here appeared, his bearing formal yet respectful. “My lady,” he said with a courteous bow, “His Majesty requests you be seated at the royal family’s table. Your mother and friends are, of course, welcome to join.” Maria blinked, visibly moved by being addressed as my mother, then smiled. I nodded, and together, we followed him. Across the room, I saw another servant gesture to Nerissa and Liora, who looked equally stunned and curious as they fell in step behind us. As we walked, I felt the stares. Soft murmurs, wide eyes, subtle gestures. We passed between tables decked in gold thread and crystal glass, the enchanted candles flickering with soft green-blue flames. A golden aisle opened before us, and at its end, the royal table gleamed like something from a fairytale. The table was long and elegant, adorned with enchanted linens that shimmered like starlight. Crystal goblets reflected the chandelier’s glow, and fragrant white lilies rested in vases carved of moonstone. We sat—Maria to my left, Liora and Nerissa across from us—and the realization washed over me like warm light: we belonged here. Throughout the next hour, healers, scholars, and renowned doctors made their way to me, introducing themselves with warm smiles and curious eyes. We exchanged ideas, discussed rare herbs and restoration rituals, and even debated advanced healing runes. I was welcomed—not just for who I was, but for what I had done. It was humbling. Exhilarating. At the other end of the table, Maria was deep in conversation with a silver-haired herbalist named Dr. Alvaric Aspen. His laughter was warm and easy, and I caught her smiling in a way I hadn’t seen in years. They exchanged notes and made plans to meet again soon. Nearby, Nerissa was darting between columns with a sparkle in her eyes, evading the handsome merman from earlier, who’d apparently stepped on her one too many times. She laughed as she vanished behind a dessert tower. Liora, meanwhile, was completely enchanted by her dance partner—a vampire named Noctis, he was the royal packs Doctor which I found strange, him being a vampire and all. They sat shoulder to shoulder, deep in discussion about nocturnal physiology and restorative potions. His red eyes never left her face. As the music softened and laughter gave way to quieter murmurs, I let my gaze drift across the ballroom—opulent, golden, alive. My eyes caught Caius’s across the room. The world slowed. He was moving toward me. “I don’t want this night to end without asking you something,” he said gently, offering his arm again. “Would you consider staying here in the palace with me?” He turned to Maria, who had just rejoined me, and added with equal sincerity, “And you as well. It would mean the world to me if this became your home, too.” Maria exchanged a look with me. I didn’t need time to think. My heart knew the answer. “We’d be honored,” I said. — From the shadows of the ballroom, unseen by all, a figure lingered. Cloaked in dark velvet and illusion magic, he watched. So that was why she’d been impossible to extract. The Silver Wolf is The King's mate. No wonder the retrieval squad hadn’t returned. He pressed a hand to the obsidian pendant at his throat, a grin forming beneath his cowl. The Owl would want to hear this himself. He slid through the edge of the crowd, unnoticed. He would deliver this news personally. And soon, everything would change. — Later that night, Caius led me down a marble corridor lit with softly glowing crystals embedded in the walls. Each step echoed gently in the quiet, and I could feel his excitement pulsing through our bond. “This is where you’ll stay until the wedding,” he said as he opened a double set of carved moonthorn doors. The room inside took my breath away. It wasn’t just a bedroom—it was a sanctuary. An arched window framed a view of the moonlit gardens, the flowers below glowing in soft, magical hues. To the right, a closet big enough to be its own house. The air smelled of lavender and clean linen. A flickering wall sconce responded to our entrance, bathing the space in warm gold light. A polished bathtub carved of white stone rested on a dais, already steaming with water that shimmered blue. “It adjusts to your mood,” Caius said with a soft grin. “The water knows exactly what you need.” My hand trailed across the silk throw at the edge of the enormous bed, which had a carved frame embedded with tiny forget-me-not flowers—the same kind preserved in my ring. “Is this our room?” I asked breathlessly. Caius chuckled. “No, my queen. This is yours—for now. A tradition for brides. After the wedding, you’ll have full access to the royal wing. Including my room. And my bed.” His eyes sparkled with mischief. Heat bloomed in my cheeks. Caius gently touched the edge of my wrist, where the pulse fluttered. “You’ve earned more than this room, Seryna. You’ve earned a place in this world that no one can ever take from you again.” And as I stood in that room, surrounded by beauty, warmth, and magic, I finally let myself believe it was true.
