A Mother’s Desperation

A Mother’s Desperation Mara sat on the edge of her bed, the parchment trembling in her hand. The moonlight through the narrow window cast pale lines across the floorboards, but she barely noticed the light. Her world had narrowed to one agonizing question: Could she really give up her son? The Threat Unfolds Just that afternoon, a messenger one of the Alpha’s trusted guards had slid into her chambers and placed the note on her bedside table. Leave the child in the forest by the Blood Tree before the next full moon. Or we take him ourselves and you will never see him again. She had stared at it for hours, ink blurring through tears. Fury rose in her chest first, a white-hot fire at the injustice. How dare they? How dare anyone threaten her son? But then a deeper fear took root. They will do it, too. The conspirators in the council wouldn’t hesitate. They believed the child’s very existence doomed their legacy. If Malcolm didn’t act, they would carry out their threat. And if he did… what hope did she have of keeping the baby safe? Malcolm’s Return A soft knock at the door broke her spiraling thoughts. “Mara?” Malcolm’s voice sounded anxious, low. “May I come in?” She folded the note tightly, hiding it under her pillow. “Yes.” He entered quietly, closing the door behind him. His golden eyes took in her drawn face immediately. “Something’s wrong.” She shook her head, unable to trust her voice. Tears glistened in her eyes. Malcolm sat beside her on the bed, pulling her into his arms. She melted into him, her body shaking. “They threatened him, didn’t they?” he whispered. She nodded, clinging to him like a lifeline. “They want me to abandon him.” His jaw clenched. She felt his anger ripple through her. “Who?” She pulled back and met his gaze. “Betrayers. A rogue faction in the council. They sent this.” She pressed the note into his hand. His eyes flicked across the words, then snapped to hers. “You must never consider it.” “I’m scared,” she admitted, her voice cracking. “I love him more than life itself. But if they come… if they take him” He silenced her with a kiss, urgent and fierce. “I won’t let them. I promise.” Yet she saw uncertainty flash behind his eyes. Even he could not control everyone in Blackridge. A Mother’s Resolve That night, sleep eluded Mara. She paced the nursery, eyes on the sleeping child, his silver lashes brushing a tiny cheek. He looked so peaceful so unaware of the storm gathering. She knelt beside the cradle and whispered, “My sweet child, mama won’t let them hurt you.” Her wolf a long silent part of her stirred, nudging her with ancient strength. But Mara was more than her wolf. She was his mother. She pulled a small leather pouch from her nightgown. Inside lay: A shard of moonstone for protection A sprig of nightbloom for camouflage A lock of her hair, bound with a mother’s oath If she had to… she would take him and run. But where? Blackridge was their home. Her only real home since childhood. To leave would mean abandoning everything Malcolm had built and risk them being hunted as fugitives. Yet the conspirators had given her a choice. Run now, or lose him forever. Unexpected Ally Dawn found Mara in the courtyard, pacing beneath frost-kissed pines. Michael approached, cautious. “Mara,” he said softly, “the Alpha has summoned the council. He knows there’s dissension.” She glanced at him. “What will he do?” “He plans to unmask the traitors publicly.” Michael hesitated. “But… some fear even then they’ll strike.” Her heart thudded. “Then I must be ready to protect him myself.” Michael bowed his head. “There is someone an old friend of your mother’s. She lives beyond the Western pass. She owes your family a debt. She can hide you and the child.” Mara’s breath caught. “The Western pass… the one through the storm cliffs?” He nodded. “Dangerous. But safe from Blackridge’s reach.” She stared at the distant mountain veiled in mist. *Could I take him there?* she wondered. Then she steeled herself. “Tell me how soon. I’ll leave tonight.” The Alpha’s Stand At high noon, the Great Hall filled with every pack member who could bear witness elders, warriors, even servants. Malcolm stood at the dais, his presence commanding silence. He dropped the traitorous letter before them. “These wolves threatened my mate’s child. They demand abandonment. But I will not stand for it.” His golden eyes swept the crowd. “Either stand with me, or step aside.” A murmur ran through the hall. Some warriors stiffened; others lowered their heads in shame. Katrina returned under guard stood silent, her eyes cold, unmoving. Malcolm met her glare. “You,” he said, voice low, “will answer for this.” She said nothing. He turned back to the council. “I strip you of your seats. You are banished exiled from Blackridge. And if you ever threaten my family again… I will see you killed.” He tipped his head, dismissing them. The hall emptied in stunned awe. Mara, standing beside him, felt a surge of pride and relief. But when the last conspirator left, a single guard remained pale and trembling. He approached Malcolm, eyes downcast. “There’s… one more. Someone within your inner circle.” Malcolm’s blade was in his hand in a flash. “Who?” The guard swallowed. “I… I can’t say. They told me I’d die if I spoke.” Silence fell like a blade. A Secret in the Shadows That evening, Mara packed a small satchel. She had decided to leave at midnight, heading for the Western pass with Michael’s guide awaiting. She knelt by the cradle, pressing a tender kiss to her son’s forehead. “I love you, my brave boy,” she whispered. Midnight bells tolled. Mara stepped into the corridor only to find Katrina Roberts standing at the end, cloak drawn, eyes glimmering in candlelight. “You’re leaving,” Katrina said softly. Mara’s hand went to the pouch around her neck. “Yes.” Katrina took a step forward. “So you trust him?” Mara’s voice was sharp. “I trust my mate.” Katrina smiled too wide. “But can you trust her?” She lifted her hood, revealing Thea’s Wyrmbone scar glowing faintly on her brow. Mara froze. Behind Katrina, another figure emerged from the shadows Michael Berg, sword drawn, eyes filled with regret. Katrina’s voice echoed, low and triumphant: “No one can hide in darkness forever.” And as the echoes of their betrayal rang through the corridor, Mara realized: The true enemy wasn’t outside the kingdom. It was standing right beside her.
