Episode 12 – The Shattering Confrontation

1704 Words
The torches lining the east corridor of the Alpha’s private wing burned unevenly, casting jittery shadows across the stone walls. Malcolm’s boots echoed in the silence as he strode toward the chamber where Katrina waited. Behind him, Michael Berg moved more cautiously, sword sheathed but mind sharpened for betrayal. They reached a heavy oaken door carved with the Blackridge sigil. Malcolm’s hand hovered over the latch hesitation flickering in his golden eyes. This was not the battlefield where he could unleash his Lycan strength with abandon. This was closer to home. A killing wound here would scar his heart even more. He drew in a breath, squared his shoulders, and pressed the door open. The Gathering Storm Katrina Roberts stood in the center of a circular room, her back straight, arms folded, head lifted defiantly. The candlelight flickered on her uniform’s silver insignia and danced across the cold resolve in her dark eyes. Behind her, a single tapestry showed the united pack in its triumphant glory now a mocking backdrop to this moment of fracture. Malcolm’s entry was silent but instantaneous. He and Michael crossed the threshold together. Malcolm’s gaze burned straight to Katrina’s, Michael’s sharpened in anger. Malcolm spoke first, his voice low and controlled. “You stand accused of treason, Katrina Roberts. Of collusion with Thea Mark and betrayal of your oaths to Blackridge and to me.” Katrina did not flinch. She tilted her chin upward. “I betrayed no one but fate itself.” Michael stepped forward, hand on the hilt of his sword. “You ordered the wyrmbone delivered to Mara’s chambers. You opened the binding scroll. You aligned yourself with Thea. Those are the facts.” Katrina’s lips curled. “Facts can be twisted.” Malcolm stepped beside Michael. “You used your position to undermine me. You endangered my mate and my son. You risked this kingdom.” Katrina’s gaze flicked to Michael. “Has he told you yet of the prophecy?” Michael’s eyes narrowed. “I know enough: Thea promised you power for taking him down. But you cannot justify betrayal with threats of prophecy.” Katrina’s shoulders sagged almost imperceptibly. She looked at Malcolm. “You think I did this for her?” she whispered. “You think I’d throw away our history for some dark witch’s promises?” Malcolm’s breath left him in a slow exhale. He almost believed her. But the wyrmbone scar on her brow glowed faintly, a mark of dark magic he had never seen before until he had to. “Then explain it,” he said quietly. “Explain why my walls were breached. Explain why the council was poisoned against us. Explain why it smelled of Thea’s shadow magic in here.” Broken Oaths Katrina closed her eyes and let out a breath. When she opened them, tears shimmered but she did not look away. “I loved you,” she said in a voice too soft, too vulnerable. “I loved you more than loyalty. More than duty. I loved you before the crown. Before the pack. Before Mara… before she existed.” Malcolm’s fist clenched, the gold in his eyes dulling to bronze. “Love is not a license to betray.” She shook her head, stepping forward. “You chose her, Alpha. You gave her the throne of your heart. You gave her your bloodline. I knew I could never compete. But I thought” Her voice cracked. “I thought if I could remove the threat… if I could secure your kingdom from that cursed child… you would see me again.” Michael’s hand tightened on his sword’s pommel. “So you became the very thing you said you hated a monster in the darkness.” “No,” Katrina hissed. “I became what fate forced me to be a desperate woman. My actions… my failures… they are mine alone.” Malcolm took a step back. “The failures are ours, then,” he said quietly. “Because mine was to trust you.” Her tears flowed freely now. “I betrayed you,” she said, voice choking. “I accepted Thea’s bargain. I thought I was doing the right thing for you, for us.” She swallowed. “I was wrong. God help me… I was wrong.” The Weight of Mercy Malcolm’s gaze shifted between Michael and Katrina. Michael’s face was stormy, ready for the kill. But Malcolm’s eyes… they were haunted with sorrow. He sheathed his sword, took a step toward Katrina, and spoke with a quiet finality. “You will stand before the High Council tomorrow to answer for your crimes. Until then, you will remain under guard in the same chambers where you once celebrated with me.” Katrina nodded, white-knuckled. “Thank you.” Michael spat. “Thank you? For what? Betraying him? Betraying us?” Katrina looked at Michael. “I am sorry,” she said simply. “I wish I could erase the pain I’ve caused.” Michael’s eyes flared with anger. “Apologies don’t unspill blood!” Malcolm held up a hand. “Enough. She will face justice in the morning. Tonight, I will not send her to her death.” Michael opened his mouth, but Malcolm’s gaze silenced him. “She’s not your prey,” he said softly. “She’s mine to judge.” The Lonely Night The guards escorted Katrina away. The door closed, leaving Malcolm and Michael alone in the chamber. Malcolm sank onto a bench, burying his face in his hands. “I loved her like a sister… like a friend… maybe like something more.” Michael sat beside him. “She hurt you.” “I know,” Malcolm replied, voice muffled. “But she’s human.” Michael’s sigh was heavy. “So is she dangerous.” Malcolm pulled his hands away and stood, walking to the window. “I will protect my son at any cost. But I will not become the monster Thea wants me to be.” Michael reached out, a hand on Malcolm’s shoulder. “Then let’s be the wolves they fear. Together.” Malcolm placed his hand over Michael’s. “Together.” Outside, the wind rattled the shutters. The night was deepening, bringing an uneasy peace before the real storm a social war of loyalties, rumors, and old wounds. The High Council Awaits At dawn, the Great Hall once again filled with the pack’s most prominent figures council elders, generals, and chief sentinels. Mara stood beside Malcolm, silent support in her presence. Katrina entered, still in her full regalia, but her posture was humble. Her scar glinted under the torchlight, a living testament to her transgression. Elder Cain rose, gavel in hand. “We are assembled to judge one of our own. General Katrina Roberts, you stand accused of treason, of conspiring with a witch to undermine the Alpha and bring harm upon your pack.” Katrina bowed her head. “I do not deny my actions.” Cain regarded her thoughtfully. “Yet this pack is built on trust. On honor. Your betrayal threatens the foundation of all we stand for.” Katrina lifted her gaze to Malcolm’s. In his golden eyes, she saw both pain and compassion. “I loved this pack,” Katrina said, voice clear. “I have bled for this pack. But I was broken by love… by jealousy… by fear. I sought Thea’s power to protect what I could not bear to lose.” A murmur spread through the hall. Mara stepped forward. All eyes turned. “Alpha,” she said softly, “the greatest threat was never Katrina. It was Thea. And by punishing her, we punish the wrong wolf.” Cain looked at Mara. “What do you propose?” Mara glanced at Malcolm. He inclined his head. “She has confessed. Let her atone by guarding the borders. By patrolling the edges of our territory for the night creatures Thea summoned. Let her risk her life to prove her loyalty.” A tense hush followed. Elder Maren spoke. “She chooses the most dangerous post… but she protects our people.” A vote was called. In the end, a slim majority agreed. A Fragile Accord Katrina knelt before Malcolm after the council broke. She bowed deeply. “Thank you, Alpha.” Malcolm pressed a hand to her shoulder. “Walk the borders. Keep watch. Redeem yourself.” She rose, tears in her eyes. “I will not fail again.” Michael stepped forward. “You’ll have our support.” Katrina nodded once, turning toward the door. As she walked away, her steps were unsteady, but her resolve had never seemed stronger. Malcolm watched her go, then turned to Mara. “It’s done,” he said. Mara took his hand. “But at what cost?” Malcolm pulled her close. “At the cost of unity. We have to rebuild trust inside and out.” The Witch’s Response That night, as Malcolm and Mara shared a rare moment of peace in his private chambers, a tremor ran through the air. Outside, the wind roared, and the torches flickered. The tapestry of the united pack fluttered, though no breeze should have touched it. Mara shivered. “Something’s coming.” Malcolm’s Lycan instincts flared. He paced to the window, then turned. On the wall opposite stood a single raven impossible. The corridor didn’t allow entry. The bird landed lightly on the windowsill and observed them with gleaming silver eyes. It let out a single croak and dropped a folded scrap of parchment. Before Malcolm could react, the raven vanished in a wisp of smoke. Mara’s breath caught. Malcolm snatched the note and opened it. In Thea’s spidery hand, the message read: “Justice is but a play, Alpha. Watch as the queen of shadows takes the throne of your heart.” Beneath the words, a single wyrmbone shard was pinned with a drop of black blood. Malcolm’s eyes blazed. “She’s mocking us.” Mara placed a hand on his arm. His Lycan growled low in his chest. Outside, the wind howled through the corridor. Through the silent halls. Through every corner of Blackridge. The storm was coming.
