Chapter 2: Pack Dynamics

1370 Words
That night, the wind followed her home. Snow clung to Selena’s boots as she crossed the final rise above Frostclaw den. The forest was madly silent; the sharp pines were still. As she moved forward, the silver glow of the night faded behind her. There was the scent of pine resins, frost, and a hunt that had long since ended. She exhaled her breath like mist as she brushed off the snow from her hair. Beneath her was the pack’s den. It was glowing faintly under the moonlight: a half-hidden hollow cut into the mountainside. Smoke was curling out of its mouth. The unusual bustle could be felt in the den. Selena saw Packmates uncoiling themselves into human form, their muscles shifting under ragged wool and fur-lined coats. Selena felt at home, yet she was uncomfortable with all the prickling eyes focused on her. She could sense the uneasiness in the air. The pack were aware of the imminent threat, yet they reacted as if nothing had happened. Although they were all worried, they respected the fact that they were together. They showed their respect to those who were higher up in the pack. Still, everything felt like a weight over Selena’s heart. And then she saw Darian from a distance. Darian was standing at a rather darker area of the den; quite dark against snow. He was surrounded by the packmates. But strangely, they were not talking to each other. As she approached, others fell back slightly, giving her the space. His pale eyes, as pale as the morning frost, met hers. “Selena” He spoke to her in a calm, peaceful tone. He had the kind of authority which did not need to yell or shout. “Alpha” She slightly bowed her head as if she was recognizing his authority. The air between them was noticed by others too. But they could not conclude whether it was respect or relief. “You happened to be late,” Darian said in a plain tone. “I was slowed down by the storm in the way.” She hesitated for a moment and then said, “I was able to notice the tracks over the southern ridges.” The tension rose among them as she spoke. A few of the betas were stirred deeply and happened to exchange their glances too. “Tracks of humans?” Darian wanted to clarify. “Not humans,” she said, “of wolves.” Everything went silent. Before they could argue about it anymore, Darian announced, “We will talk about it after the meal.” His gaze softened on her, and he said, “It was a wise decision to come home before nightfall.” Selena reciprocated with a smile that did not reach his eyes. “I always come home,” she said. He stepped aside a little and showed her the way to where everyone was gathering for the meal. “Come, the pack’s waiting.” As she entered, everyone fell silent, and they bowed their heads in her respect. She heard someone murmuring, “The Luna has returned.” As she moved around the den, the rhythm changed. The Frostclaw den was carved on the heart of a stone. The firelight was flickering over its walls, making it come alive. The scent of meat roasting was mingling with the mist of pines and faint musk of fur and snow. The laughter of half-wolf children arose from the farthest end as they danced, played and wrestled with each other. Selena was watching them quietly. She always enjoyed the innocence, warmth and closeness these scenes brought. In this very corner of the world, their wilderness found a home, even for a while. The betas engaged themselves in the work already. Mara was sorting out the things quickly. Reid was standing with two hunters, training them. Selena moved towards them. She wanted to talk to Mara, so she said softly, “Mara.” The woman turned towards her and bowed her head in respect. “Luna.” “I need you to double the watch near the southern ridge tonight, will you?” Selena said, "Whoever left those marks on the tracks must be nearby waiting to attack us." Mara nodded and acknowledged. “I will take the first shift,” Selena said. A small girl was wrestling with a boy twice her size. She was beating the hell out of him. When Luna saw her, she froze but seemed unrepentant. "Take it easy, Moia." She touched her hair by bowing to her height and said, “Don't break the ribs of your brother; he might need them in hunting season,” and Moia giggled. She said, “He started it.” Selena’s smile was lost somewhere. “Then be the one who ends it with grace,” she said softly, her voice still lost somewhere. She patted the head of the girl and then straightened up. The laughter around her was immersing in the air and was making the rhythm of the night. Selena turned as she felt Darian’s gaze over her body. It was a reminder to Selena that they will stay together no matter what happens. They stay together, and they will lead together. Once everyone was done with the meal, Darian called them to gather around. His voice was powerful enough to make everyone pay attention to it. “Frostclaw,” his voice filled the air. “We hunt together; we eat together. Our borders are strong and thriving, but today, Selena has brought some unfortunate news we must pay attention to,” and every eye turned to Selena. Selena stepped forward. She moved with grace even in the face of danger. “I saw tracks over the southern ridges, and I fear that these were not of humans. Someone is testing our grounds.” There was a disturbance in the crowd. Some wolves growled. Selena waited these sounds to faint and then she said,”they moved silently as if they were trained to. They were neither rogues nor wanderers but the actual invaders who were making a cunning move on our grounds.” Reid’s hand was tightened across his spear. “Do you think another pack is around?” he asked in an enraged tone. “It is possible that they are nearby, but they are waiting, not attacking. They must be onto something.” The murmurs were rising. They were arguing and tensing over what Luna had just said until Darian’s voice cut them down: “Then we double the patrol on our borders until we know who it was on our borders.” “What are we waiting for? We should hunt them down before they strike.” It was the young hunter Kael who was passionate to shred the enemy into pieces. Darian’s gaze followed him. And soon he found him. “A wolf who attacks without thinking dies first.” Kael’s eyes dropped with shame. 'He must not have said that,' he thought to himself. Selena stepped in quietly. She said gently, “Alpha is right. We must not hurry. We should test our patience first. The true strength lies in being patient.” The edges of Darian’s authority softened with Selena’s gentle tone. Together they were two halves of one heartbeat of the pack. As they steadied the pack under their leadership, their eyes were shining with determination. Darian looked at her with sentiments of thankfulness. It was always like this: his command and her calm. As the meeting was concluded by the alpha, everyone returned to their duties. Some prepared for the nightfall, and some tended to the young ones. The Darian stayed behind. “You know you have a way with them,” he said while admiring her beauty as well as her brains. “It’s not my way; it’s their way. They only need reminding.” She said in a calm tone. "But still you balance perfectly.” He had admiration in his tone. She was in no mood for acknowledging her talents tonight. She said, “That’s what Lunas are for.” For the first time in this whole progression Darian took a sigh of relief.
