The Girl He Was Supposed To Love

CHAPTER 2: Leanne officially regretted joining the literature club. Not because the club was bad. No. The problem was the boys. Specifically— They were all ridiculously attractive. “Lea, you zoned out again.” Leanne blinked as Chris waved a cookie in front of her face. “I was thinking.” “You looked dead.” “I am dead.” Chris dramatically gasped before placing the back of his hand against her forehead. “She’s dying. Kai hyung, do something.” Kai, who was organizing books nearby, sighed. “She’s probably tired because you keep bothering her.” “That’s discrimination.” “That’s facts,” Ren muttered quietly from the corner while reading his novel. Carl chuckled softly from the couch. Leanne stared at the four boys again. It had only been three days since she joined the literature club, yet somehow she already felt too comfortable around them. Too comfortable. Especially Chris. He sat beside her while eating sweets, constantly teasing her, whining dramatically whenever she ignored him, and smiling so brightly it almost felt illegal. And honestly? It was dangerous. Because every time Chris smiled— Leanne felt her heartbeat betray her. “You’re staring again,” Chris whispered teasingly. Leanne nearly choked. “I AM NOT.” “You are.” “She definitely is,” Kai added casually. Leanne pointed accusingly at him. “Traitor.” Kai smirked slightly. “…Cute.” The room went silent. Kai immediately froze. Ren slowly lowered his book. Carl raised an eyebrow. Chris blinked. Kai turned bright red instantly. “I-I MEANT THE SITUATION!” Leanne burst into laughter while Kai looked seconds away from jumping out the window. Chris started laughing loudly too. “Kai hyung called Lea cute—” “SHUT UP.” The peaceful atmosphere only lasted for five more seconds. Because suddenly— The clubroom door slammed open. “CHRISTOPHER!” A girl stormed inside dramatically wearing the academy’s elite uniform perfectly. Long curled hair. Designer bag. Expensive perfume. And eyes locked directly onto Chris. Chris immediately looked exhausted. “…Oh no.” The girl marched toward him before grabbing his arm possessively. “There you are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you!” Leanne blinked. The girl finally noticed her. And frowned. “…Who is she?” Chris gently removed her hand from his arm. “She’s Leanne. Our new club member.” The girl’s sharp eyes narrowed instantly. Leanne immediately understood. Ah. One of those girls. Chris sighed before introducing them. “Lea, this is Sabrina Villareal.” Sabrina smiled. It looked fake. “I’m Chris’s fiancée.” The entire room became awkwardly quiet. Leanne nearly choked on air. “Excuse me?” Chris looked horrified. “It’s NOT REAL.” “It is real,” Sabrina corrected proudly. “Our families arranged it.” Chris looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. Leanne stared at him. “…You’re engaged?” “I don’t want to be!” Sabrina ignored him completely and looked back at Leanne. “I hope you understand boundaries.” Carl’s expression instantly darkened slightly. Ren quietly closed his book. Kai stopped cleaning. The atmosphere changed immediately. Chris frowned. “Sabrina.” “But I’m only being honest,” she said sweetly. “Girls always misunderstand Chris’s kindness.” Leanne crossed her arms. “Don’t worry. I’m not planning to steal anybody.” Chris immediately pointed at Sabrina dramatically. “SEE? LEANNE UNDERSTANDS.” Sabrina looked unconvinced. Very unconvinced. Then suddenly— Chris grabbed Leanne’s wrist and pulled her behind him slightly. The movement surprised everyone. Even Chris himself. His cheerful expression disappeared briefly. “She’s my friend,” he said quietly. “Don’t make her uncomfortable.” The room fell silent. Leanne blinked slowly. Because for the first time since meeting him again— Chris’s smile was gone. And underneath that playful personality… She caught a glimpse of something else. Something tired. Something sad. Sabrina looked hurt for a split second before quickly hiding it. “…Fine,” she muttered softly. Then she glared at Leanne one last time before leaving dramatically. SLAM. Silence. Chris immediately smiled again. “ANYWAY—who wants pastries?” Too fast. The mood changed too fast. Leanne noticed it immediately. The others did too. But nobody said anything. Kai quietly handed Chris a cream bun. “…You okay?” Chris smiled brightly. “Yep!” Lie. Leanne could feel it. Carl looked at Chris silently with concern. Ren adjusted his glasses quietly. Nobody pushed further. Like they were already used to it. And somehow… That made Leanne’s chest hurt a little. Later that afternoon, after club activities ended, Leanne walked alone through the hallways while thinking deeply. About Chris. About Sabrina. About the strange sadness hidden behind Chris’s smile. “Careful.” Leanne suddenly bumped into someone’s chest. Strong hands steadied her before she fell. She looked up— And froze. A tall silver-haired boy stared down at her calmly with piercing gray eyes. Beautiful. Terrifyingly beautiful. “You should pay attention while walking,” he said smoothly. Leanne quickly stepped back. “Sorry.” The boy studied her carefully. “…You’re the scholarship student everyone’s talking about.” Leanne immediately frowned. “And?” A small smile appeared on his lips. Interesting. Most students became nervous around him. But not her. “I’m Adrian Cortez,” he introduced calmly. “Student Council President.” Leanne recognized the name instantly. The most untouchable student in St. Aurelius Academy. Great. Another rich genius. “Well, nice meeting you,” Leanne said politely before trying to leave. But Adrian suddenly spoke again. “You’re part of Christopher Reyes’s club now, right?” Leanne paused. “…Yeah.” Adrian’s smile disappeared slightly. “…Be careful around him.” Leanne frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?” But Adrian simply walked past her. Leaving those strange words behind. And for some reason— Leanne suddenly felt like joining the literature club was about to change her life completely.
