The paved courtyard, dotted with garden beds and trees, was surrounded by most of the high school classrooms and students’ lockers. The trees in the courtyard had been selected for their “student friendliness”—a fancy way of saying their branches were unattractive to school boys who liked to practice fencing. There were plenty of benches to sit on and a large shade sail hung overhead, making it quite a comfortable spot for one to sit and talk to friends, or for one to sit and stress about the upcoming test one hadn’t studied for.
