After sharing a moment of understanding with Princess, Dave was left alone for a brief moment as she returned to her conversation with the other students. He took a deep breath and tried to calm his racing heart, feeling both elated and terrified by the prospect of engaging with such a dynamic group.
"Hey, Dave!" one of the other students greeted him, offering a high-five, which Dave awkwardly reciprocated. "That was a great question you asked earlier!"
"Uh, thanks," he replied, his voice barely audible. The student gave him an encouraging smile before turning back to the discussion, leaving Dave to stew in his self-doubt.
*Why am I even here?* he thought. *Everyone else seems so much more confident and articulate than me. I'll never catch up to them.*
As he glanced around the room, his eyes inevitably fell upon Princess Ng once more. She stood out among her peers, not just because of her beauty but also due to the air of authority and confidence she exuded. Her laughter filled the room, and it seemed that everyone wanted to be near her, to bask in her brilliance.
*I wish I could be like her,* Dave mused. *She's everything I'm not: charismatic, outgoing, and effortlessly intelligent. It's no wonder people are drawn to her.*
"Hey, Earth to Dave!" another student called out, snapping him from his reverie. "Do you have any thoughts on this part?"
Dave hesitated, unsure if his input would be valuable enough. "Uh, well," he began, cautiously voicing his opinion. "I think that the author is suggesting..."
"Interesting point," Princess interjected, her eyes locked on Dave's. "I hadn't considered that perspective before."
"Really?" he asked, feeling a rare flicker of pride. "You think it's a valid interpretation?"
"Absolutely," she affirmed, her smile genuine and warm. "You have a unique way of looking at things, Dave. Don't be afraid to share your insights with the rest of us."
Her words struck a chord within him, momentarily dissolving the cloud of self-doubt that had been his constant companion. Perhaps he did have something worthwhile to contribute after all. But as the conversation continued to flow around him, Dave couldn't help but feel the weight of the contrast between himself and Princess Ng – a contrast that seemed to represent the gulf between their social standings and personalities.
As the study session came to an end, Dave gathered his things, still mulling over the events of the day. He knew that, despite their differences, he and Princess shared a mutual understanding and respect for each other's intellect. And though he still struggled with his self-confidence, he felt a small glimmer of hope that perhaps one day, he too could find his voice among the cacophony of brilliant minds surrounding him.
