Chapter 4: Daydream

1300 Words
Carran is a city with varying people. People who are committed to both their jobs and families. But within these people are secrets unknown to the world. Shapeshifters. Beings who can transform from something to someone. Beings regarded as myth, but in Carran, they are a reality. The system of Alpha and Luna came from these people, and this system exists only in Carran. Before civilization developed, they lived in hiding. Afraid that once their existence is known, they will be hunted. And their existence would become nothing but a piece of book. These shapeshifters are werewolves, but unlike normal wolves, they can transform into humans. At first, doing so is a struggle, but as they developed and reproduced, it became a lifestyle for them until they can completely hide their ears and tail. The now developed Carran used to be a dense forest, with these shapeshifters wandering around like other animals. But now, they have a job, a family, and a life no different from normal humans. Alphas are the leader of a pact. But unlike the past, where they all lived in caves, they now gather in a workplace. Companies. For one to be affiliated in a pact, they go through interviews. Wolves that used to bite each other now compete through business. While Alphas are the most dominant among the pact, they are vulnerable to the scent of a Luna. Luna, a female wolf, are dominant compared to others but not towards an Alpha. It is within their tradition that an Alpha and a Luna mate, regardless of whether they are fated or not. In Carran, where there are more than 1 Alpha and 1 Luna, they usually mate only towards those within their pact. It is considered a taboo to mate with an Alpha from another pact. And no one have ever failed to comply to this rule. Alphas and Lunas are rare. But among bloodlines, it became common. As the tradition states, a Luna must marry an Alpha within the pact, and it is usually decided between families. Caelia, a Luna born from the Moon family, has a sister 3 years younger than her. With a family of great status, it is deemed normal that they abide by the rule. And her sister, Cecil, was first chosen before she came of age. But Caelia, though reluctant, chose to offer herself for the sake of her sister. She refused to send her little sister to a man much older than her. And so she volunteered to a path she knew would hurt. Caelia and Darius first met when they were both 18. An age where love can bloom in their innocent hearts. If Caelia must say what her first impression was, then it would be "love". A mansion not much bigger than theirs. A place bustling with servants. Noises everywhere in the hall. And a joyous atmosphere that calmed one's heart. The Thorne family is also a family of 4. However, unlike Caelia's family, their forefather lives in the same house. Decisions are made by the elders, and the successor must always obey. When they entered the mansion, 2 boy not far from her age stood beside their parents. She had no way of knowing who she will be mating, unless they introduce him. Caelia stared at the two. Faces not similar but still has some features that shows their similarity. One boy, who seemed younger, stepped closer and offered his hand. "Darius Thorne." he smiled. Although he's tall, he never gave off an intimidating aura. His face showed a pure and innocent vibe, making anyone around them soften. 'He looks like someone I can get along well with." she muttered, lifting a burden off her shoulder. She had always been worried about her mated Alpha. This tradition of theirs forced them to mate with a person they have no feelings with. So her worries are completely valid. No one wanted to spend their whole life with a complete stranger. And Caelia felt the same. If she could avoid such situation, she would definitely run off. But that would make Cecil her replacement. Caelia couldn't forget the night Cecil cried so hard in her room. She refuses to get mated, she hated it so bad that she never left her room. Whenever their parents brings her food, she refuses to eat. And whenever they asked her to go out, she wouldn't answer. Caelia would never allow her sister's health deteriorate. The only solution she could think of is to replace her. The Thorne family first did not agree, but upon seeing Caelia's face, they finally acceded. It brought relief to Caelia when her sister finally left her room. She looked so different from before. Her eyes has sunken, lips chapped, and the usual glow she had was replaced with a gloomy expression. It's not that she did not understand her sister's situation. Once she leaves their home for her mated alpha, she would never be able to come back as freely as she could. She will have to live in a place stranger to her. She will have no mother or father to tend to her. Although they can have a maid, the maid would never treat her as warmly as their parents would. She will have to face the world alone. Without a mom, a dad, nor a sister. Only a strange man who might not even treat her kindly. Caelia finally felt secured after meeting her mated Alpha. And that was enough security for her parents too. "Caelia Moon", she returned his smile with a brighter one. They then sat on the couch to talk about their " mated contract". Caelia listened carefully, but it was all information she already know. 1. They must live in the same house. 2. They must spend the entire weekend together at home. 3. They must stick together even at work. 4. They must manage the pack together. 5. They must not betray one another. That was mostly about it. There were so many rules that she almost fell asleep. She couldn't understand why these rules are necessary. 'Isn't it normal to do such things with just common sense alone?' she wondered. The rules stated sounded more like a business contract than a mated one. She wanted to look for someone to share the thought, so her eyes wandered around the place until her eyes saw Darius, who was nodding incessantly at every word. She couldn't hide her smile and chuckled inwardly, but then, their eyes met. 'Did he catch me?' she was so embarrassed that her ears turned red. But she couldn't avert her gaze and continued to look at him. At that moment, she thought her world stopped. It was a feeling she never felt before, but it made her stomach funny, as if butterflies were circling around. Her heart started to beat uncontrollably as if she was having a cardiac arrest. Darius, noticing this, smiled at her. And then turned his focus back at the conversation. Caelia lowered her head and tried to hide her face. She couldn't believe what had just happened. The rules spoken by the elder was a blur to Caelia. She couldn't focus, not after what happened. Although it was her first time experiencing such thing, she knew it wasn't because of illness. She was inlove. Like that in fairytales. Like that of their parents. She was so excited that no voice could break her out of her daydream. She imagined a future with him. Them living in the same house, sleeping in the same bed, waking up side by side, greeting each other each morning, eating together, and spending all their time together. It was a dream that removed all her worries. But that dream would soon turn into nightmare.
