Chapter 6: Sense of Disappointment

1293 Words
Morning came faster than Caelia thought. However, it did not greet her as warmly as she expected. Back home, she was used to the chirping of birds, the sunlight that peeks through the thin curtain, and her mom's constant humming. But now, all she heard was nothing but the gust of wind blowing the curtains roughly. The mansion loomed with darkness, and even the footsteps of the servants were nowhere to be heard. Caelia rose from her bed and peeked through the curtain. There, she saw the backyard with the pond and jasmines scattered in each side. But with a proper look, she noticed one thing she did not see yesterday. It was a place hidden because of the trees surrounding the wall. A greenhouse. Unlike the gloomy atmosphere of the mansion, there stood a place which unusually glowed in the yard. She grew curious. Caelia thought it would be the perfect place for Caelia and Darius to have their breakfast. She closed the curtain and got ready to go out. After taking a warm bath, she pulled one book from the shelf and entered her walk-in closet. However, she realized late that she has never taken a thing out of her suitcase yet. The clothes she brought were inside, and the rest of the things she will need. 'I guess I was so exhausted to even unpack my things.' she let out a sigh. The walk-in closet is empty. Although the room had everything an entire house would, it had no clothes. But she did not complain. In fact, everything in the room is perfect. She also expected that they wouldn't buy clothes without knowing her size. It may only be a peck from their pockets, but she still considered it a waste. Without waiting any further, she took out a set of cloth and changed from her bathrobe. She decided to unpack later and have breakfast with Darius first. She wondered if he was also not aware of the Greenhouse hidden behind the trees. 'I bet he'd be surprised.", she chuckled, then checked herself in the mirror before going out. Caelia's room is just in front of Darius. While the guest rooms are on the other side. She wondered if Darius was already awake. She pondered for a moment before deciding to knock on the door and figure out the rest. "knock, knock" Silence. She raised her hand again to knock on the door and reluctantly called out his name. "Darius? It's me, Caelia." She waited for a moment, thinking that he might still be asleep or is getting ready. But even after 10 minutes of waiting, no Darius went out to greet her. 'Is he really asleep?' 'One last time', she thought, then attempted to raise her hand to knock when someone suddenly spoke. "The master has left the mansion." She flinched as she stopped her movement and turned to look at the source of the voice. It was the servant from yesterday. The old man's glowing yellow eyes made her uncomfortable. He had the same eyes as Darius, but strangely, the servant's eyes looked more like a predator looking at its prey. She gathered her courage to speak up and clenched her fist. "Where did he go?" The old man, though looked uncooperative, honestly told her where Darius was. "He received a call from the master of the house. He had departed an hour ago and will be having a breakfast at the Thorne mansion." As if he had read her intention, he did not waste any more time and indirectly told her not to wait. Caelia, feeling embarrassed, lowered her head and thanked the servant. But what weighed heavier was the disappointment she felt. It's understandable that he doesn't feel the need to tell her where he was going, but shouldn't he have at least told her he won't be having breakfast here? The rule clearly states they should stay together, but is the rule too vague? Should she have listened more carefully? Caelia thought Darius wouldn't be as cold as she thought. She even believed they will get along well. Darius clearly did not dislike her, and even if they don't act as a mated couple, they can still act as friends. She had accepted not sleeping on the same room. It may be too much for him since they only entered the relationship to fulfill their obligations. So she let it go. However, his behavior was too unpredictable. Yesterday, he was all smiley towards her, then the next moment, he won't even speak a word. She felt disappointed, but such feeling should only arise when one have an expectation. Did she also expect better than what she should? The servant, as if sensing that she no longer have questions, bowed his head and went downstairs. Caelia, once again, was left alone. She hurried out of her room to have breakfast with him. She was so excited but then again, she was left feeling disappointed for nothing. The receding footstep of the old servant vanished into thin air—leaving the house empty once again. Cold wind passed through her from the window placed at the center between her room and Darius'. The once excited heart sank and she lost her appetite. But once again, she tried to understand him. "He must have been in a hurry. Perhaps he decided to have his breakfast there as his last. He must have missed his family, and so does his family." She smiled at the thought that he was just being a good child. She composed herself—as she was always taught, and entered her room to have a light breakfast before starting her day. She did not want to jump to conclusions. As a mated couple, she doesn't want to make a big deal out of nothing. She wanted to be seen as a matured woman. Someone he can rely on. And so she will continue to understand him. Even if it pains her, even if it break her. *** After the light meal she had, she immediately went to her walk-in closet to unpack her stuff. Since she did not bring that much in the first place, she finished in no time. The once empty closet was now filled with her clothes. The bookshelf with only 1 book used to open the closet was now filled with colors as her favorite books took place on it. Her desk, with only a lamp, was now crammed with miscellaneous things. Even the empty cabinet were packed with things she brought from home. It was mostly things her family and friends gifted her. Although she won't be able to meet them as much as she used to, she can at least feel them with the gifts they gave her. All of which hold a special meaning in her heart. The hairpin gifted by Cecil. The necklace her mother bequeathed to her on her 18th birthday. The watch her father thought of so carefully as to match her character. The diary she had clumsily written on, and all the things she received in all of her 18 years on earth. She couldn't help but smile at it. However, what really improved her mood was the teddy bear she had carefully placed on her bed. It was the gift Darius gave her the other day. Both of them gave gifts after their introduction. It was a sign of goodwill. The plush had the form of a pup. However, it has white skin and eyes that resembled hers. She couldn't help but smile at the thought that Darius must have chosen it with her in mind. However, her daydream was soon interrupted by the sound of engine that perked her ears. "Darius?"
