Chapter 7: Lunch Predicament

1280 Words
Caelia enthusiastically rose from her seat as the sound of engine approached the mansion. "It must be Darius". She checked herself on the mirror again and hurriedly left her room to greet Darius. She somehow felt embarrassed because she is acting too much like a wife. However, there is no better way to improve their relationship than to initiate a conversation and ask each other how they are doing. The sound of footsteps approaching the door sounded louder than normal. With how quiet the place is, it's simply natural to expect the noises they make to sound louder. As the door swung open, a man with a suit appeared. It was the same face Caelia saw yesterday. But the smile that made her heart beat were nowhere to be seen. She wondered if something had happened back at the mansion. But his face looked naturally stern that she kept her question to herself. "Did you have breakfast?" she asked, intending to start a conversation. However, she soon regretted it as the question was just utterly foolish. She already know the answer to that question, and yet, she still asked like some wife waiting to cook for her husband. Although embarrassed, she tried to compose herself and waited for an answer. Darius, who finally saw her, only nodded his head and checked his watch. It was already near 9 in the morning. However, no light can be seen outside the mansion. Caelia wondered if the sky is gloomy today or it's just the mansion's atmosphere. After checking his watch, he brushed past Caelia and uttered a word. "I'm sleeping." then went upstairs without even a glance at her. Caelia, again, for the third time, was left alone. Her heart tightened, but she tried to understand him, not wanting to jump to conclusions. 'Maybe he's exhausted from the travel. He also woke up early so he must have not had a proper sleep. Or something might have actually happened back home. Once he wake up, I'll certainly tell him about the Greenhouse, then we will have lunch there.' Again, she exhaled a great amount of air and sighed. The tightness in her heart eased and she unclenched her fist. She decided to visit the greenhouse first. Clean the dirt if there is, and prepare later when the time comes. Without wasting a moment's breath, she head outside and made sure not to make a creaking sound to not wake Darius. The air was unusually cold. The sky looked clear, but the mansion remained loomed in darkness. Even the jasmines were slowly wilting because no light seems to bless the place. She felt bad. It would be a waste to let them wither away. She wondered if there is a gardener in the mansion, but as far as she remember, the only servant she saw was the old man. With his age, it would be an exhausting job to take care of the flowers. Moreover, watering the flowers is not what it needs, but sunlight. However, Caelia can't force the sky to bring light upon the flowers, so she left feeling helpless. Even her reflection from the pond turned unusually gloomy. The water lilies soon covered her reflection and she turned to the path leading to the greenhouse. The trees that surrounded the wall was tall enough for Caelia. Even when she's walking right to where she saw the greenhouse, the trees were too deceiving. If she hadn't seen it from the second floor, she's afraid she may not have known until the day she died. She finally reached a point where a gap was seen among the trees. She immediately entered without a second thought knowing it won't be dangerous. The greenhouse, once seen from her room, looked lively. But now, it was a place so full of life that can undoubtedly lift one's spirit if they see this view. The greenhouse looked ordinary outside, but upon a closer look, the flowers inside looked like rainbows which glowed despite the gloomy atmosphere of the mansion. However, it cannot be compared when one enters the place. Although all kinds of flowers surrounded the inside, it was organized in a way that doesn't look painful to the eye. Caelia is not an expert when it comes to flowers, so naturally, she know little of their names. But if she could name them all, it would be "beautiful". The greenhouse looked more like paradise to Caelia than a house to store plants. There was even a coffee table and 2 chairs at the center. She had no idea who designed it, but she can tell they must have taken into consideration the mated couple. However, she was soon washed with confusion. 'Who took care of this?' She couldn't think of anyone inside the mansion who could do such a tedious job. There was only one servant, and he was too old to tend to this. Moreover, if their job is to tend flowers, then wouldn't they have done the same to the jasmines outside? Her head hurt from thinking. She couldn't think of anyone who would do this job. Even if she forced herself to believe it was the old servant, it just did not make sense. The old man also looked too indifferent to even care for these lovely flowers. She sat in frustration. She just couldn't place her head on it. 'Maybe the gardener left after we were moved here?' she thought, but then something still felt amiss. With how well this greenhouse was taken care off, then why would the gardener leave? They even continued to tend to these flowers despite the mansion being empty. Moreover, the flowers looked perfectly fine despite a day without its gardener. Her mind drifted from one thought to another. Trivial questions filled her mind that she even forgot the time. When she realized it was close to noon, she rose so fast she even forgot to put the chair back to its place. She couldn't waste more time. She has to make a meal before Darius wakes up. After treading the path back to the mansion, she hurriedly went to the kitchen to prepare food. But what greeted her was a sight she completely forgot. The kitchen, with only 1 table and 2 chair, a sink with empty counter, and an empty multi-door fridge. She slapped her forehead, as if just realizing her foolishness. She decided to bring ingredients from upstairs and bring it to the kitchen, so she hurried to the second floor and slowly opened the door. The fridge was packed. But the problem lies exactly with that. She just realized that all the food in her fridge are ready-made, with no single soup or any hot food. She will have to heat them first but where? As if realizing the predicament she is in, she sighed in a defeated manner. In order to heat the food, she will need a microwave. However, the kitchen, with nothing but a table and 2 chair, a sink and empy counter, with an even emptier multi-door fridge, has no air of life. Where will she find a microwave in a kitchen with absolutely none? 'Should I just eat salad with him?' she shook her head with the thought. She can't invite him to a meal then present him with a food that won't even fill his stomach. She pondered for a moment. A few minutes later, the door of her room swung open. She did not even care about the sound it might make. With a look of victory, she stood in front of Darius's room. 'Since there is no food here, then we will eat outside.'
