CHAPTER 002 SELENE’S POINT OF VIEW As our eyes met, an unseen force drew me in with such force that it felt as if it might suffocate me. My body reacted instantly while my mind lagged behind as my heart pounded against my chest walls. This moment was the culmination of my entire life's waiting. The Moon Goddess remained with me throughout my journey. The mate bond was real. The bond between us existed in a physical form that overwhelmed me to the point of being unavoidable. The years of suffering through misery and loneliness brought me to this moment where I stand before my destined mate. And he wasn’t just anyone. The Alpha King Viktor Stefan stood before me. King of the Seven Regions of the North. The most powerful wolf in existence. The atmosphere became dense with tension while raw electricity filled the air. My knees gave way beneath me while my wolf, Lana, screamed inside my head with intense desire. "Mate," I whispered with my voice just above a breath. A brief moment made me think I saw a flicker in his golden eyes, which caused my chest to tighten with hope. The moment passed before I could fully register it. "An Omega?" His voice boomed down the hallway with sharp disbelief. The Moon Goddess must be playing a cruel joke. I flinched. He moved before I had time to respond. He moved faster than my eyes could follow and ended up in front of me with his big hand around my throat while pushing me into the stone wall. I gasped. I dug my fingers into his wrist while my feet kicked wildly to escape his grasp. The crushing force against my windpipe became unbearable and cut off my ability to breathe. "Who are you?" His growl reverberated through the air while his warm breath brushed against my skin. His golden eyes burned with intense rage while his fangs showed menacingly. "Selene," I choked out. "Selene Radović." His eyes showed a moment of recognition, but it failed to match my expectations. "The breeder," he sneered. His voice carried contempt while his gaze scanned my body as though I were livestock instead of his partner. Darkness invaded my mind while my vision blurred and my lungs burned. My voice broke into a weak rasp as I managed to say, "Please." His grip loosened. I fell to the ground while coughing harshly as I desperately pulled air into my lungs, and my hand moved automatically to my neck. The imprint of his grip remained on my skin, which throbbed painfully as a brutal reminder of the recent events. Viktor growled at me. "Worthless wolf, listen closely." My body felt too weak to raise my eyes toward him. But I forced myself to. Let's be clear about one thing. I will never mark you. You will never be my Luna." His words cut through me with deadly accuracy like sharp blades. My heart broke into pieces. The mate bond existed as a sacred connection. A gift. A promise of love and devotion. But to him, it was nothing. Just like me. He demanded his pups without showing any emotion in his voice. After you deliver my pups, I will reject you because I am Alpha Viktor Stefan of the CopperHeight Pack and King of the Seven Regions of the North. My breath escaped in a choked gasp. The pain was unbearable. The powerful connection between us intensified his words so they struck me with devastating force as if fate itself wanted to destroy me from within. The mental image of Lana whimpered while she fought against the agony of our mate's rejection. The pain I experienced was completely new to me. I wanted to scream. I wanted to fight. I needed to confront the Moon Goddess about why she had chosen to give me a mate who hated me. But I couldn’t. My situation remained unchanged regardless of what words I used. I begged, "Please," before I could stop my words. "Please what?" His golden eyes bore into me. I didn’t even know. My only desire was to make the pain disappear. He issued a chilling command when he said, "This stays between us." Under no circumstances should anyone discover that you are my mate. After you fulfill my request, you can leave. A sharp laugh cut through the air. "There he is. The love of my life." My stomach twisted as I turned my head to look at her. Milena. The blonde she-wolf who appeared earlier approached us while her face formed into a mocking smile. She approached Viktor directly and looped her body around his arm. You’ve already met the breeder. Viktor let out a low hum. "I have." What did your breeder do to me? Milena turned toward me while her lips formed into a pout. "She attacked me. My hair got pulled so forcefully that I ended up falling backwards onto my behind. I stiffened. What? My jaw tightened as I stared at her in disbelief. "She’s lying," I declared through a voice filled with suppressed anger. Milena scoffed, rolling her eyes. "She’s crazy." I looked at Viktor with silent desperation, hoping he would recognize her deception. He completely ignored my presence. He released an exasperated sigh before turning his attention back to her. "Forget it. Milena, you’re wasting your time with that stupid Omega. She’s not worth your time." A sudden stabbing pain pierced my chest. Milena grinned triumphantly. "You’re right, baby. She’s not worth anything." She lifted herself on her tiptoes to deliver a gentle kiss to his cheek. A crushing sensation overwhelmed me as if I couldn't breathe. I couldn’t do this. I had to get out. I spun around on my heel and began walking as soon as they started to leave. Not toward my room. Not toward anywhere inside this place. I was leaving. I made the decision to never become a breeder. I refused to stay trapped in a pack where my mate hated me. I would choose death as a rogue over existing as a disposable object. I made it through the packhouse exit without encountering any obstacles. The moment my feet touched the outside ground, I started running at full speed. I sprinted into the forest while my lungs burned with each step. Lana howled inside my mind. "We can’t leave him!" He doesn’t want us. I shot back. "You saw what happened, Lana. He will never love us. He will never accept us. We can’t live like this!" Maybe he will change his mind. she argued. "He won’t." My body fought against the pain and heartbreak, but I pushed my legs to continue moving. Then I heard it. The unmistakable noise of heavy paws crashing through the forest reached my ears from behind. I wasn’t alone. Fear gripped my throat. "Lana, faster!" Our path forward stopped abruptly when a huge creature jumped in front of us, blocking our way out. A beast. The wolf before me towered above any I had ever encountered with its night-black fur and eyes that shone with golden rage. The identity of the creature became clear to me before it made any movement. Victor. My heart pounded in my chest. I found myself completely and royally trapped. What actions will he take against me at this moment?
