Chapter 9 - Entrees and Enemies Amaris POV I managed to get a two-hour nap in before I awoke feeling worse than before. The pain around my throat had gotten much worse and was now a constant throbbing pain that got worse every time I swallowed. I sighed as I looked in the mirror as all the various shades of the bruises all over me. This was going to take a lot of time and makeup. Good thing I had an abundance of both for once. The makeup took me around an hour to complete, so I focused on my clothes next. Sylas would expect me to look elegant and well looked after, the complete opposite of how I actually was. I rifled through my old wardrobe and lamented the lovely designer clothes I had that I used to take for granted. So many of the dresses I had would have been perfect for this evening, but they all showed far too much skin. After his outburst earlier, conservative yet elegant was definitely the way forward if I wanted to avoid my uncle's wrath. The only snag was that the 16-year-old me was neither of those things, and that is the person whose wardrobe I was currently raiding, belonged to. She was sitting under the shade of an oak on the packhouse grounds with her head slightly bowed as she focused on making a garland. Her beautiful locks were soft and curly and fell around her like a golden veil. She had just the hint of a contented smile on her face. Her long flowing dress in forest green hugged her form at the top and then flowed outward from her waist. She looked like the May Queen herself. As I sat daydreaming about my mother and how beautiful she must have been, there was a strange feeling that came over me. It was like I was being compelled to go to my mother's old room as though some invisible force was tugging at my very soul. I rose from my seat and followed my instincts to what had been her room. I had always stayed in the room that adjoined hers and had never dared to set foot in the room as though it was haunted. A small part of me had believed at one point that I couldn't go into her room because I was the one who killed her, and I didn't deserve that closeness. As I stepped towards the room, hand outstretched to the door, I nearly fainted from the jolt of electricity that shot through my hand. to be continued...
