Part 4 As I came to consciousness, I saw Sylas standing over me with a menacing look. He gave me a sickening grin as his shoulders heaved up and down from his heavy laboured breathing and it was as though time stood still. My vision was still spotty, my throat raw and head throbbing with pain when I noticed Kevin appear behind my tormentor. Sylas must have registered the shock or relief in my eyes because he whirled onto Kevin, seeming ready for a fight. What Kevin did next will always in my mind stand out as the single bravest thing I have ever seen anyone do. He crossed the room very calmly in two long deliberate strides and punched Sylas square in the jaw. I wasn't sure who was more shocked at Kevin's actions, him, me or Sylas. Evidently, it was Sylas. He held his jaw in disbelief, eyeing Kevin as he moved his jaw back into place while his wolf healing factor worked its magic. Kevin had taken a step back by this point and taken a strong stance, seemingly preparing himself for the coming fight. He had the look of a man ready to lay down his life for honour. While they were distracted, I did my best to get to my feet, using the wall to brace myself. My movement must have snapped them both out of their trance because they both suddenly adjusted their stances and cleared their throats. A tense moment passed before I decided to take my opportunity to leave. "I should probably go finish the welcome packs and be ready to receive your guests, Alpha." I said quickly, I turned to Kevin, "Kevin, I'll be back after lunch service to confirm the guest numbers once everyone has arrived." They both looked at me, each giving a nod of agreement before locking eyes again as I left the office. I could hear Kevin's foot-falls following close behind me. He was following me to make sure Sylas didn't. As I hurried back to the kitchen, I flinched as I heard the sound of crashing furniture coming from down the hall. Kevin stopped me once we reached the kitchen, placing a hand on my shoulder and gently turning me to face him. He gave me a sympathetic look as he pulled me into a hug. I sagged into his arms and sobbed quietly into his chest. I'm not sure how long we stayed like that but once the tears stopped, I hurried back to the luna's apartments to clean myself up. I looked in the mirror and I was a mess. My hair was dishevelled and my makeup streaked down my face. Thankfully, my clothes were still fine. By the time I had cleaned myself back up and gotten back down to the kitchen it was nearly 8am. That meant I had roughly 4 hours before the first guests started to arrive and, consequently, was required to greet and be given their welcome packs, of which none were ready. Excellent. Just what I needed. I headed back to my office and began the mammoth task of the welcome packs. I swear sometimes it felt like I ran a hotel rather than a wolf-pack house. So much of running a pack nowadays is just diplomacy, hosting guests and fancy parties. Kevin talked about how it used to be more based on rituals and religious ceremonies. Most wolves were pagan and, as such, observed all the pagan festivities. I wish our pack still did. I'd love to be able to celebrate Imbolc, Summer Solstice, Beltane and especially Samhain. Sadly, Sylas didn't believe in anything that didn't directly benefit or serve him in some way, so a belief system based on worshipping and sacrificing to other entities never appealed to him. Once I had printed out my full list of overnight guests, I discovered we had roughly 100 guests, which I could more than easily spread over 56 rooms. With most of our guests being mated and lot of the unmated guests being brothers, sisters or cousins, there was a lot of doubling up and room sharing, which made my life easier. So, with that figured out, I began compiling the welcome packs. I started by typing out a little welcome note which read: "Welcome to the Silvermoon Pack house! To help your time with us be as pleasant as possible, please find enclosed within this pack the following: A map of the manor and grounds to help you find your way. " Once I had this typed up, I began the long and arduous task of filling and assembling each welcome back. Once I was around half way through and I assumed breakfast service was winding down for the morning, Kevin joined me and sat in silence with me and helped me assemble the last of the welcome packs. Each pack was neatly arranged within a little square-bottomed re-usable jute tote bag and placed into plastic crates to be transported to the foyer where I had set up a little "welcome desk". Around 11am, two relatively young omegas arrived on Sylas's orders to carry all the boxes to the foyer. I followed them dutifully there and began my set up. Once I had everything methodically arranged, I sat on my high stool behind the table ready to greet everyone. Right on cue, after all the work was done and right at the last moment, Sylas arrived looking all smug and proud of the completed work which he had no part in. And thus began the tedium of welcoming 100 people. I, of course, did the hard work while Sylas was doing the smiling, hugging, handshaking part, which involved no actual real work. After 2 hours, everyone but the King and Queen had arrived. Sylas gave me leave to "go about my business until otherwise required". In other words, he was sick of seeing me and wanted me out of his sight and mind for the time being. I was all too happy to oblige. He probably didn't want me to meet the king and queen anyway and wanted to privately welcome them. Fine by me. I headed back to my temporary accommodation for the time being and slumped on the bed for a short nap before dinner. I definitely needed it.
