The Truth That Didn’t Make Sense

The café suddenly felt smaller. Like the walls had quietly moved closer. Ethan stared at Claire, trying to process the words she had just said. I left to protect you. The sentence echoed inside his head like a cruel joke. He let out a slow breath. “Protect me from what?” Claire’s eyes darted nervously toward the windows before returning to him. “It’s not something I can explain here.” Ethan’s frustration rose immediately. “Oh, that’s convenient.” “Ethan, please—” “No,” he interrupted sharply. “You don’t get to disappear for weeks, cheat on me with my best friend, and then show up with some mysterious story.” “I didn’t cheat on you.” The words came out fast. Desperate. Ethan laughed bitterly. “You expect me to believe that?” Claire leaned closer across the table. “That photo you saw… it wasn’t what it looked like.” Ethan’s voice dropped coldly. “You were kissing him.” “It was staged.” The answer hit him like a slap. “Staged?” he repeated. “Yes.” Ethan shook his head in disbelief. “You’re saying you pretended to cheat on me?” Claire’s voice trembled. “Yes.” Across the table, Maya remained silent, but Ethan noticed something strange. She was watching Claire very carefully. Not like someone hearing a dramatic story. More like someone analyzing every word. Ethan leaned back in his chair. “You’re going to need to explain that.” Claire looked around the café again, clearly uncomfortable. “Not here.” “Then where?” “Somewhere private.” Ethan hesitated. Every instinct in his body told him to walk away. But curiosity pushed against that instinct. Because if there was even a small chance Claire was telling the truth… He needed to know. Before he could answer, Maya finally spoke. Her voice was calm. But firm. “That’s probably not a good idea.” Both Ethan and Claire looked at her. Claire’s expression tightened slightly. “And you are?” “Maya.” Claire nodded slowly. “And why exactly do you think Ethan shouldn’t hear what I have to say?” Maya met her gaze without hesitation. “Because people who lie usually need privacy to keep lying.” Claire’s eyes flashed with irritation. “You don’t know anything about me.” Maya shrugged. “I know enough.” The tension between them was immediate. Ethan suddenly felt like he was sitting between two opposing storms. Claire turned back to him. “Ethan, please.” Her voice softened. “You know me.” The words hit deeper than Ethan expected. Did he? Because right now he wasn’t sure he knew either of them. “I just need ten minutes,” Claire said. Ethan looked down at his coffee. His mind was spinning. Finally he stood up. “Fine.” Maya’s eyes widened slightly. “You’re going with her?” “I just want answers.” Claire looked relieved. “There’s a park down the street,” she said quickly. “We can talk there.” She turned and headed for the door. Ethan hesitated. Then looked at Maya. “I’ll be right back.” Maya didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes were locked on Claire’s back as she walked away. Then she finally looked at Ethan. “Be careful.” The way she said it made him pause. “Why?” Maya hesitated. Then shook her head. “Just… trust your instincts.” Ethan nodded slowly before leaving the café. ⸻ Outside, the air felt colder. Clouds had rolled across the sky, dimming the sunlight. Claire stood near the sidewalk waiting for him. She looked nervous. Like someone carrying a secret that weighed too much. “Thanks for coming,” she said quietly. Ethan crossed his arms. “You’ve got ten minutes.” Claire nodded. They began walking toward the small park nearby. For a while neither of them spoke. Finally Ethan broke the silence. “You look different.” Claire glanced at him. “Different how?” “Worried.” Her lips pressed together. “I am.” They reached the park and stopped near a bench beneath a large oak tree. Claire turned to face him. “I need you to listen carefully,” she said. Ethan crossed his arms. “I’m listening.” Claire took a deep breath. “The night you saw that photo… it was supposed to happen.” Ethan’s patience snapped slightly. “You’re not starting this off well.” “I’m serious.” Her eyes were filled with urgency. “Jason and I planned it.” Ethan stared at her. “You planned for me to catch you cheating?” “Yes.” He laughed again, but this time there was anger behind it. “Why would anyone do that?” Claire swallowed hard. “Because someone was watching you.” The words landed heavily. Ethan frowned. “What?” “There were people asking questions about you.” “What kind of people?” Claire hesitated. “That’s the problem.” Ethan felt irritation creeping back in. “You’re speaking in riddles.” “I’m trying to protect you.” “You already said that.” Claire ran a hand through her hair, clearly frustrated. “Jason works for a security firm.” Ethan blinked. “Since when?” “Since last year.” “That doesn’t explain anything.” Claire lowered her voice. “A few months ago he told me something strange.” Ethan’s stomach tightened. “What?” “Someone had been looking into you.” “Why?” “We don’t know.” Ethan stared at her. “This sounds insane.” “I know.” Claire’s voice softened. “But Jason said whoever it was had access to things they shouldn’t.” Ethan shook his head. “So your solution was to fake cheating on me?” “Yes.” “That makes zero sense.” Claire stepped closer. “If whoever was watching you believed we broke up, they would stop paying attention.” Ethan rubbed his temples. “You expect me to believe this?” Claire’s eyes filled with tears. “I hated doing it.” “Then why didn’t you tell me?” “Because if you knew, you might accidentally reveal something.” Ethan stared at her. The story sounded ridiculous. But something about the fear in her eyes felt real. “Why are you telling me now?” he asked. Claire hesitated. Then whispered, “Because it didn’t work.” Ethan felt a chill run through his chest. “What do you mean?” Claire glanced around the park. Her voice dropped even lower. “They’re still watching you.” Ethan’s stomach twisted. “Who?” Before Claire could answer— A black SUV rolled slowly past the park. Its tinted windows reflected the gray sky. Claire froze. Her face drained of color. “That’s them.” Ethan turned. The vehicle slowed slightly as it passed the bench. Then continued down the street. “What the hell?” Ethan muttered. Claire grabbed his arm. “You see why I had to do it now?” Ethan looked back at her. His heart was beating faster. “If this is some kind of prank—” “It’s not.” Her voice was urgent. “You’re in danger, Ethan.” Across the street, inside the café window… Maya stood watching the entire scene. Her expression wasn’t confused. It wasn’t surprised. It was something else entirely. Recognition. And concern. She pulled out her phone and quickly typed a message. Maya: They found him. Three dots appeared on the screen almost immediately. Then a reply. Then you know what to do. Maya looked back toward the park where Ethan stood with Claire. Her voice was barely a whisper. “I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this.
