Chapter Five

1254 Words
Victoria's pregnancy was soon obvious in the fourth month. Lydia Wyndham and her grandson Roger, doted on her and made sure she didn't lack or stress herself. "Your child is going to be my grandchild" Lydia would say each time she and Victoria were reading. Victoria would only laugh at the lady's comment. "I am serious. I am taking your child as mine too." she sounded serious. Victoria was grateful for coming into the Wyndham family. Roger was still always having talks with her and would occasionally bring her flowers. "I hear they brighten a pregnant woman's mood." "Thank you, Mr Wyndham. You are very kind." "Tell me, Victoria who is the babe's father?" Roger had dared to ask. Victoria's body tensed up as she tried to rack her head for a possible reply that would stop the man from asking anything further. "Uh.. he died before I came here." The lie rolled out of her tongue easily. It was a lie, however, Simon Abernathy was dead to her the day he humiliated them and threw her out. Roger offered his sympathy and further assured her that he would care for her and her unborn child. Close to her seventh month, Lydia Wyndham dies and this saddens Victoria because she had loved the woman as her mother. " She was the only person who loved me." Victoria cried her eyes out and refused to be consoled, even by Roger The other workers in the Wyndham mansion murmured amongst themselves after the lady's death. They didn't know what their fate would be. They hoped that the young master wouldn't send them away. The lawyer comes after a few days to read the will and Victoria has been left 40% of the Lady's wealth which consists of a huge share in the family's business. "I...I...I.. can't believe this. I am not even a Wyndham." Victoria's eyes began to water with tears. "Madam Lydia had changed the will two months ago and had said that you deserved it." The lawyer said. "Congratulations, Miss Elston." He nodded at her and shook Roger's hand before leaving. Victoria tried to read Roger's reaction as he had gotten just 20%. Roger's face still had the friendly calmness and he drew her into a hug as she began to cry again. Victoria didn't know why the lady had done that but was grateful. Roger begins to court her officially and eventually proposes to her. She wasn't in love with him per se but she knew the choice she was making was good at least for her unborn child. The wedding was a rather quiet one, taking place in the sitting room with a minister present. Victoria's due date has arrived and she's writhing in pain. Roger paces back and forth as the family doctor and some maids attend to Victoria. The birthing took hours and she eventually birthed a son. "He's so handsome. Look he took your hair." Roger gushed as he held the tiny bit in his arms and rocked him. He was beaming with smiles like the proud new father that he was. Victoria had never seen someone as kind as Roger, taking another man's child as his. "Oh, he's so perfect. What do we call him?" He asked her. Victoria had already picked his name months before. " Lyon Ainsley Wyndham." "Hello Lyon Ainsley Wyndham, I am your daddy." Roger cooed as he rocked the child. Victoria smiled at the scene. Ainsley had been Lady Lydia Wyndham's middle name. Victoria knew she had made the right choice by marrying Roger. __________________________________ "Come on honey, this would be good." Roger was trying to convince Victoria to go to San Greta for a business convention. "Do I have to go? You can go in my stead." Victoria tried to get Lyon to sit still so she could clean his mud-stained face. "Lyon please" she begged the hyperactive three-year-old. The boy blew a raspberry at her. "He's just as mischievous as you." She sighed. "That's why he's my son. Come here, champ." Lyon ran into his arms and Roger spun him around three times before putting him down. Lyon staggered dizzily and fell on the couch. "I know San Greta holds some memories but that's where the Wyndham business is. The board is beginning to get impatient with waiting for you." Roger held her dainty hands and brushed them with a soft kiss. " I don't know if I am ready to go there, Lyon needs to be watched all the time and I can't do that over there." Victoria tried to drive her point home by pointing at her son who was running around again. " You are ready, Victoria Wyndham. That's why you took those degree courses on business. Lyon won't be a problem, we'll take one of the maids as a nanny for him while we go to the convention. This is going to be a good debut for you into the company and the business world as a whole. With both of us together, we'll snag multiple partners at the convention." Victoria sighed knowing that he had a point. "Fine, you win. How long do we stay there?" "Three to four months should be able to stabilize things. Plus, it'd be a good vacation experience for Lyon." Victoria agreed to this. Roger planned their trip and arranged for the Wyndham jet. They left three days later with a maid as agreed. The Wyndhams also had an estate in San Greta, this was where they would be staying. The mansion was similar to the one in Loxden. The convention started two days after their arrival. One of the top companies in San Greta was sponsoring the year's convention, so the first day was at the company " Xerox Holdings". Victoria and Roger arrived quite early. " I'll be back honey, I need to go say hello to some old pals." Roger excused himself, leaving Victoria standing there. Victoria looked around and saw people in class. She hoped that her outfit of an off-the-shoulder slight body-hugging polka-dotted gown, black pumps, and a white purse was alright. Her choice of jewelry had been a pearly necklace with matching teardrop earrings. Her blonde hair was styled to springy curls and cascaded down to her back. Simon walked in wearing a dashing grey business suit. He knew he would bag lots of partners today, especially the ones who were females. They tend to flock around him a lot. All he ever needed to do was to give a smile. However, today he was going for a bigger partner, the host of the business convention. His eyes searched the area for the company's CEO and was struck when he saw a familiar face. "No, it can't be." He said to himself. He moved closer to the person and his eyes widened. "It is her. What is she doing here?" Victoria was constantly checking her watch and looking around for Roger who had somehow disappeared into the crowd of CEOs. "Victoria? Victoria Elston?" A familiar baritone voice called from behind her. The hair on her skin stood as she recognized the voice. She hoped and prayed that it was just in her head until the owner of the voice stepped in front of her. "It is you. Victoria Elston, flesh and blood." He still had mockery in his voice. Victoria wasn't going to give in to his taunts. She stared hard at him, not saying a word but having an air of arrogance around her.
