CHAPTER 1: 48 HOURS!

558 Words
"Please... don't do this!" Serena Hart's scream echoed through the luxury apartment, raw enough to drown out the violent storm raging outside. Rain whipped through the open floor-to-ceiling window, soaking the marble floor beneath her trembling knees. Her entire body shook. Not because of the cold. Because three-year-old Lily was dangling several stories above the ground. Tiny fingers clawed helplessly in the air. Her frightened cries pierced Serena's heart. "M-Mommy..." Serena felt something inside her shatter. "No!" she sobbed. "Please hold on, baby. Mommy's here." Standing at the open window was the last person she had ever imagined would become her greatest nightmare. Her husband. Damien Cross. His once-kind hazel eyes had turned empty, his jaw tight with hatred. Rain drenched his clothes, yet his grip on their daughter's tiny wrist never loosened. "You forced me into this," he said coldly. Serena stared at him in disbelief. "What are you talking about? Damien, she's our daughter!" "Our daughter?" He let out a bitter laugh. "You suddenly remember that now?" A flash of lightning illuminated his face. For a split second, Serena couldn't recognize the man she'd spent five years loving. Where had the gentle man who promised to cherish her forever gone? Where had the man who kissed Lily goodnight every evening disappeared to? This stranger wore her husband's face. Nothing more. "Please," Serena whispered, inching forward. "Whatever happened between us... we can fix it. Just give me Lily." Damien's eyes narrowed. "One more step..." He lifted Lily a little farther outside the window. "...and you'll watch her die." Serena froze. Every instinct screamed at her to run. To snatch her daughter away. But fear chained her to the floor. Lily burst into frightened tears. "Mommy... I'm scared..." "I know, sweetheart," Serena cried, barely able to breathe. "Mommy is here. Close your eyes, okay? Mommy will save you." She had to. She had no choice. Because forty-eight hours earlier... Life had been perfect. Or so she believed. She had worked tirelessly as a senior financial analyst, often sacrificing sleep just to ensure her family lacked nothing. Every paycheck went toward building a future. Every promotion was celebrated with Damien. Every dream included Lily. She never complained. She loved them more than herself. Damien had promised he was building a successful business. She believed every late-night meeting. Every failed investment. Every excuse. She defended him when relatives mocked him. She ignored every warning that she was carrying the family alone. Because love demanded faith. Or so she thought. Until forty-eight hours ago. The first crack appeared. Then another. Within two days, every lie she had trusted came crashing down. And now... Her daughter was paying the price. "Damien..." Serena whispered, tears streaming endlessly down her face. "If you hate me... then hurt me instead." His expression didn't change. "I already am." The words struck harder than a slap. Serena searched his face for even a trace of mercy. There was none. Only resentment. Only anger. Only something far darker than hatred. Thunder exploded overhead. Lily screamed. Her tiny fingers slipped. Serena's heart stopped. "No!" She lunged forward. Damien instinctively stepped back. Time seemed to freeze. One tiny hand. One desperate scream. One impossible choice. Then... Lily's terrified cry echoed through the storm as Serena reached with every ounce of strength she had... ...and the world around her fell silent.
