The photograph trembled in Serena's hand.
WE SEE EVERYTHING.
The words seemed to burn into her eyes.
She quickly looked around the Blackwood Global parking lot.
Luxury cars moved in and out of the underground garage.
Employees chatted as they left work.
A security guard walked past without a second glance.
Everything appeared perfectly normal.
Yet someone had been close enough to photograph her only moments ago.
Someone was watching.
Someone always seemed to know where she was.
Her phone buzzed again.
It was Damien.
Damien: Where are you? I've been trying to reach you.
Serena stared at the message.
She hadn't told him she was coming to Blackwood Global.
Had he simply gone to her office and discovered she wasn't there?
Or...
Did he already know where she was?
Her fingers hovered over the screen before she typed a short reply.
Serena: I wasn't feeling well. I went home.
She watched the message change to Delivered.
A few seconds later, Damien replied.
Damien: I'll leave work early. We'll have dinner together.
Serena frowned.
The message sounded perfectly normal.
Perfectly loving.
Exactly the kind of message an innocent husband would send.
She slipped the phone into her handbag.
Nothing made sense anymore.
---
Back inside Blackwood Global, Ethan stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands tucked into the pockets of his tailored trousers.
The city stretched beneath him.
But his thoughts were elsewhere.
A knock interrupted the silence.
Helen entered quietly.
"She left safely."
Ethan nodded.
"Any sign she was followed?"
"Not yet."
Helen hesitated before placing a thin file on his desk.
"We received another report."
Ethan opened it.
Inside were several surveillance photographs.
Every one of them showed Serena.
Leaving her office.
Picking Lily up from daycare.
Shopping for groceries.
Standing outside her apartment.
Some had clearly been taken weeks earlier.
Others...
Only yesterday.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"They've been watching her longer than we thought."
Helen lowered her voice.
"Do we tell her?"
"No."
She looked surprised.
"Not until we're certain."
"If she panics, she'll make mistakes."
"And mistakes get people killed."
---
That evening...
Serena arrived home to the smell of garlic and butter.
Damien was in the kitchen.
An apron hung loosely around his waist.
Lily stood on a chair beside him, proudly stirring a bowl twice her size.
"Mommy!"
She jumped down and ran into Serena's arms.
"Daddy is cooking!"
Serena forced a smile.
"Is he now?"
Damien laughed.
"I know."
"A miracle."
For a moment...
Everything felt painfully familiar.
The warm apartment.
Lily's laughter.
Damien smiling at her from across the kitchen.
If not for the messages...
If not for the hotel video...
She could almost believe her marriage was still real.
Dinner passed quietly.
Damien spoke about ordinary things.
Traffic.
A difficult client.
Lily's drawings.
Not once did he mention Ethan Blackwood.
Not once did he ask where Serena had really been.
It was almost as though...
He wanted her to believe nothing had changed.
---
Later that night...
After Lily had fallen asleep, Serena stood alone on the balcony.
Cool night air brushed against her skin.
She replayed everything Ethan had said.
"You're involved in something much bigger than you realize."
But why?
She wasn't rich.
She wasn't famous.
She was just a financial analyst trying to hold her family together.
What could anyone possibly want with her?
The balcony door slid open behind her.
Damien stepped outside carrying two mugs.
"I thought you could use some tea."
She accepted it quietly.
"Thank you."
For several minutes, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Damien broke the silence.
"Do you still trust me?"
The question caught her off guard.
She turned to look at him.
"What kind of question is that?"
"The kind that deserves an honest answer."
His expression was unreadable.
"I've felt you pulling away."
Serena looked down at the steaming tea.
She wanted to ask him about the woman.
About the hotel.
About the lies.
Instead...
She asked a different question.
"Have you ever lied to me?"
Damien didn't answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the city lights.
Then he sighed.
"Yes."
Serena's heart stopped.
"There are things I've kept from you."
The confession stole the air from her lungs.
"But..."
He turned to face her.
"I've done it to protect you."
Protect her?
Before Serena could respond, Damien's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
"I have to take this."
He walked back inside.
The call lasted less than two minutes.
When he returned...
The warmth had disappeared from his face.
"I have to leave."
"Now?"
"It's business."
"It's almost midnight."
"I know."
He kissed her forehead.
"I won't be long."
Serena watched from the balcony as Damien drove away.
Five minutes later...
She made a decision.
She grabbed her car keys.
Tonight...
She was going to follow him.
---
Across the city...
Damien's car pulled into the underground parking garage of an abandoned warehouse.
The building was dark.
Silent.
He stepped out and walked toward a steel door.
Before he could knock...
It opened.
The elegant woman Serena had seen at the hotel stood waiting inside.
She folded her arms.
"You're late."
"I had to make sure Serena didn't follow me."
The woman smiled faintly.
"And?"
Damien looked back toward the darkness outside.
"I think we're still safe."
Neither of them noticed...
Far across the street...
Another car sat with its headlights off.
Inside, Ethan Blackwood lowered a pair of binoculars.
He wasn't watching Damien.
He was watching the warehouse.
His voice was calm as he spoke into a secure phone.
"Team Alpha."
A pause.
"Do not move until I give the order."
His eyes narrowed.
"Tonight..."
"We finally find out who's really pulling Damien's strings."
At that exact moment, another vehicle quietly turned the corner.
Serena's car.
She parked a short distance away, unaware that both Damien...
And Ethan...
Were already there.
And neither man knew...
She had arrived.
