The gunshot echoed again.
Closer this time.
Emily’s ears rang as her body locked in place, fear crashing over her like a wave.
This was real.
Too real.
“Move.”
Alexander’s voice snapped her back.
His hand tightened around hers, pulling her forward as chaos erupted inside the mansion.
Shouting.
Footsteps.
Glass shattering somewhere in the distance.
Emily stumbled slightly as she tried to keep up.
“What’s happening?!” she cried.
“They found us faster than I expected,” he said coldly.
Another loud crash.
This time, right behind them.
Emily flinched hard.
Her grip on his hand tightened instinctively.
“Stay close,” he ordered.
“I am!” she shot back, her voice shaking.
They turned a corner—
and suddenly stopped.
Two men stood at the end of the hallway.
Dressed in black.
The same kind from before.
Emily’s breath hitched.
Her heart nearly stopped.
One of them smirked.
“Well… look who we found.”
Everything happened too fast.
Alexander moved in front of her instantly, pushing her behind him.
“Don’t come any closer,” he warned, his voice deadly calm.
The men laughed.
“You think you can stop this?” one of them said.
Emily’s mind screamed.
Run. Move. Do something.
But her body wouldn’t respond.
Then—
everything exploded.
A sharp movement.
A struggle.
A punch.
Emily gasped as Alexander lunged forward, moving with a speed and precision she hadn’t expected.
He wasn’t just a businessman.
He fought like someone who had done this before.
One man hit the wall hard.
The other tried to grab Alexander—
but failed.
Emily’s heart pounded wildly as she watched.
Fear.
Shock.
Something else she couldn’t explain.
“Alexander—!”
“Run!” he shouted.
She froze.
“I’m not leaving you!”
Big mistake.
One of the men recovered faster than expected.
And this time—
he didn’t go for Alexander.
He went for her.
Emily’s eyes widened.
Before she could react, a strong hand grabbed her arm violently, pulling her back.
She screamed.
“Let me go!”
Panic exploded inside her as she struggled, her heart racing out of control.
“Wrong move,” the man growled.
Everything blurred.
Fear.
Noise.
Chaos.
Then—
suddenly—
he was gone.
The grip disappeared.
Emily stumbled forward—
only to be caught instantly.
By Alexander.
His arms wrapped around her, pulling her tightly against his chest.
Too tight.
Like he was afraid to let go.
“Don’t touch her!” he roared.
Emily froze.
She had never heard his voice like that before.
Raw.
Furious.
Uncontrolled.
His body was tense.
Dangerous.
“Are you hurt?” he demanded, pulling back just enough to look at her.
She shook her head, breathless.
“I—I’m okay…”
His jaw clenched.
Relief flashed across his face—
but it disappeared quickly.
“Stay with me,” he said.
Not a command this time.
Almost a plea.
Her heart skipped.
More footsteps echoed.
More voices.
They were coming.
Alexander grabbed her hand again.
“Change of plan,” he said quickly.
“We’re leaving.”
“Leaving? Where?!”
“You’ll see.”
No explanation.
Of course.
They ran.
Through another hallway.
Down a staircase.
Through a hidden door Emily hadn’t even noticed before.
A secret passage.
Her mind spun.
Who are you?
They finally stopped in what looked like an underground garage.
A black car waited.
Engine already running.
Alexander opened the door for her.
“Get in.”
Emily hesitated.
Everything felt insane.
Out of control.
“Alexander… what is this? What are you hiding from me?”
For a second—
he looked at her.
Really looked.
Then he stepped closer.
Too close.
His hand reached up—
and gently touched her face.
A complete contrast to the chaos around them.
“I’m not hiding anything from you,” he said quietly.
A pause.
“I’m protecting you from it.”
Her breath caught.
Before she could respond—
he opened the door again.
“This isn’t over,” he added, his voice turning cold once more.
“They won’t stop.”
Emily’s heart raced as she got into the car.
As the doors slammed shut and the car sped into the darkness…
she realized something terrifying.
This wasn’t just danger anymore.
This was a war she didn’t understand.
And the only person standing between her and it…
Was the man she was supposed to hate.
