Chapter 7: You’re Not Safe Without Me

724 Words
The car sped through the dark, nearly empty streets, its engine the only sound breaking the heavy silence between them. Emily sat rigid in her seat, her hands clenched tightly in her lap. Her heart hadn’t slowed since the attack. Every sound, every shadow outside the window made her tense. Gunshots. Men chasing them. Alexander fighting like someone trained for war. None of it made sense. “Talk to me,” she said finally, her voice low but firm. Alexander didn’t respond. He kept his eyes on the road, his expression cold and unreadable, as if nothing had happened. Emily felt something inside her snap. “Stop ignoring me!” she demanded, turning toward him. “I almost got taken! You don’t get to stay silent after that!” The car filled with tension. Then— “Enough.” His voice cut through the air like a blade. Sharp. Controlled. Final. Emily froze, her breath catching in her throat. Slowly, Alexander turned his head to look at her. His eyes were dark. Intense. Focused entirely on her. “You want answers?” he said quietly. “Then listen carefully.” Her pulse quickened. “For the past three years,” he continued, “I’ve been dealing with people who operate in the shadows. They don’t follow rules. They don’t negotiate.” A pause. “They eliminate threats.” A chill ran down Emily’s spine. “And now,” he added, his gaze hardening, “you’ve become one.” Her eyes widened. “That’s insane! I don’t even know what’s going on!” “That doesn’t matter,” he replied coldly. “You’re close to me. That’s enough for them.” The weight of his words crushed her. Emily turned away, staring out the window, her reflection faint in the glass. “So this is my life now?” she whispered. “Running… hiding… being hunted because of you?” Silence followed. But this time, it felt heavier. “If you stay with me,” Alexander said after a moment, his tone lower now, “you live.” A pause. “If you leave… I can’t protect you.” Her chest tightened. “So I’m trapped,” she murmured. Something flickered in his expression. Brief. Almost invisible. “No,” he said quietly. “You’re alive.” That didn’t comfort her. Not even a little. Minutes passed in silence. But Emily couldn’t stop thinking. About the girl. About the attack. About him. “That girl…” she said softly. Alexander’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. “You said she has information,” Emily continued. “What kind of information?” No answer. “Does it have something to do with me?” she asked, turning to face him again. That made him react. His eyes snapped toward her, sharp and alert. “Why would you think that?” Emily hesitated. “I don’t know… it just feels like I’ve been dragged into something bigger. Something I don’t understand.” Silence. Too long. Too telling. Alexander looked away. And in that moment— Emily knew. Her heart began to pound harder. “What aren’t you telling me?” she whispered. Still, he said nothing. Instead, he reached for her. His hand wrapped around her wrist suddenly, firmly, pulling her slightly closer. Emily gasped softly, her breath catching. “Listen to me,” he said, his voice low and intense. Her heart raced. “No matter what happens… no matter what you hear…” He leaned closer, his presence overwhelming. “…don’t trust anyone.” Her breath trembled. “Not even you?” she asked quietly. For a split second— his expression changed. Something real broke through the cold mask. Then it was gone. “Especially not me.” Emily froze. That answer unsettled her more than anything else. The car finally slowed. She looked outside. They were no longer in the city. This place was isolated. Quiet. Hidden. “Where are we?” she asked. Alexander turned off the engine. “Somewhere safe,” he said. A pause. “For now.” He stepped out of the car, then walked around to her side and opened the door. Emily hesitated before getting out. Because deep down… she knew one thing for sure now— This wasn’t just his world anymore. It was hers too.
