JUNE; I watched the flames crackle and dance in the center of the bonfire, the orange glow casting long shadows across the circle of students. The evening air was cool against my skin, carrying the scent of burning wood and distant pine. Each student in a sweatshirt, it was a really cold evening following the rain. Romy sat pressed close to my side, unbothered about whatever Madam Lucy was saying, her shoulder bumping mine every few seconds as she chirped excitedly about her day. Her day she had spent at only God-knows-where. “You won’t believe what happened,” she said, her voice bubbling with energy. “I spent the entire morning and almost the entire afternoon with Mr. Ben. He was showing me the old architectural drawings in the main hall. The man knows so much about rural structures.
