Valeria could not sleep.
She lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind racing with thoughts of the battle, the wounded, the dead. The horn pulsed faintly at her belt, a constant reminder of the promise she had made. The voice in the dark had been silent since she returned from the battlefield, but she could feel its presence—a weight at the edge of her consciousness, waiting.
She rose from her bed and walked to the window. The moon hung low in the sky, a pale sliver of silver against the darkness. The snow-covered mountains stretched to the horizon, their peaks gleaming in the faint light. The wind howled against the glass, carrying with it the distant echo of the battle.
"What do I do?" she whispered.
The horn pulsed with warmth.
"You seek answers," the voice said. "I can give them to you. But first, you must come to me."
Valeria's hand tightened on the horn.
"Where are you?"
"I am beneath the mountain. In the depths where the light does not reach. You will find me if you follow the seam."
"The seam?"
"The connection between worlds. You touched it when you forged the horn. You can follow it to me."
Valeria hesitated. She remembered the flicker in her father's eyes, the faint movement of his fingers. She remembered the weight of the dead, the grief of the wounded.
"I will come," she said. "But I need to prepare. I need to—"
"You need to trust yourself," the voice interrupted. "You have the power. You have the will. You have everything you need."
"How do you know?"
"Because I have watched you, Valeria Raven Spire. I have seen your struggle. Your sacrifice. Your refusal to give up. You are not like the others. You are something more."
She closed her eyes.
"I will come tomorrow. At dawn. I will find you."
"I will be waiting."
The horn fell silent.
Valeria walked to the door of her chamber and stepped into the corridor. The fortress was quiet, the only sound the distant howl of the wind. She made her way through the empty halls, past the sleeping soldiers, past the silent guards, until she reached her father's tower.
The door to his study was open, as always.
He sat in his chair, facing the window. The same chair. The same window. The same view of the frozen North. The fire had gone out, leaving the room cold and still. Dust covered the furniture, thick and undisturbed.
Valeria walked to his side and knelt beside his chair.
"Father," she said softly. "I spoke to the prisoner today. The voice in the dark. He told me that you are trapped. That your soul is slipping away."
She reached out and touched his hand.
"I am going to save you," she said. "I am going to find a way to reach you. I am going to bring you back."
She squeezed his fingers.
"I don't know how. Not yet. But I will find a way. I promise."
For a moment—just a moment—she thought she saw his fingers move. A faint tremor, barely visible.
She held her breath.
"Father?"
Nothing.
But she had seen it. She was certain.
She rose and walked to the door.
"I will come back," she said. "I will keep coming back until you speak to me."
