The river was frozen solid.
Valeria stood at its edge, her boots planted in the snow, her eyes fixed on the ice that stretched before her like a sheet of pale glass. The river had been a lifeline for the villages of the Eastern Spine—a source of water, of fish, of trade. Now it was frozen, silent, dead.
She had come here to think.
The confrontation with the council had left her raw, exposed. She had revealed her secrets—or enough of them to make herself a target. Malachar would use this against her. He would spread word of her "dangerous power," her "alien connection," her "reckless ambition."
She had made herself vulnerable. She had given her enemies the ammunition they needed to destroy her.
But she had also set something in motion. The truth was out now. She could no longer hide in the shadows, pretending to be something she was not.
She was Valeria Raven Spire. Heir to the North. Commander of the Raven Spire army. And she carried a power that would shake the foundations of the world.
She stepped onto the ice, her boots finding purchase on the frozen surface. The ice was thick, solid—safe enough to walk on. She made her way to the center of the river, where the ice was clearest, and looked down at her reflection.
Her face stared back at her—pale, sharp-featured, with eyes that had seen too much. She looked like her father. She had never noticed it before, not truly, but now she saw it clearly. The same jaw. The same nose. The same cold, calculating gaze.
"I am my father's daughter," she whispered.
The words felt strange on her tongue. She had spent so long trying to be different, trying to carve her own path, that she had forgotten who she came from.
Her father was broken. He had not spoken in three years. But he was still alive. Still breathing. Still waiting.
She had to reach him. She had to find a way to bring him back.
But how?
She thought of the voice in the dark. The ancient thing that had called to her from beyond the stars. It knew things—things that had been forgotten, things that had been lost to time.
Could it help her? Could it tell her how to reach her father?
She touched the horn at her belt. It was warm beneath her fingers, pulsing with a faint, steady rhythm.
"I need your help," she said. "I need to know how to save my father. I need to know how to reach him."
The horn pulsed, and she felt the connection—the thread stretching beyond the mountain, beyond the North, beyond everything she had ever known.
"Come find me," the voice whispered. "I am waiting."
Valeria closed her eyes.
"I will come. I promise. But first, I need to protect my people. I need to grow stronger. I need to—"
The voice interrupted her.
"You need to stop delaying. The Vraxxians are coming. The Voidborn are stirring. And your father's soul—"
It paused.
"Your father's soul is slipping away. If you do not act soon, he will be lost forever."
Valeria's heart stopped.
"What do you mean?" she demanded. "What's happening to him?"
"He is trapped," the voice said. "Trapped between worlds, caught in the space between life and death. The grief that consumed him has become a prison. He cannot escape on his own."
"How do I save him?"
"You must enter the prison. You must find him and pull him back."
"How? How do I do that?"
The voice was silent for a long moment.
"You must learn to walk between worlds. You must master the seam that separates reality from the void. You must become a Voidwalker."
Valeria stared at the ice beneath her feet.
"And how do I become a Voidwalker?"
"You must reach Bronze rank," the voice said. "You must unlock the ability to travel beyond your world. And you must come find me."
Valeria's hand tightened on the horn.
"I will," she said. "I will come find you. I will save my father. I will protect my people. I promise."
The horn pulsed once, then fell silent.
Valeria stood on the frozen river, her heart pounding, her mind racing.
She had a new goal now. A new purpose. She would reach Bronze rank. She would unlock the power of the Voidwalker. She would find the voice in the dark.
And she would save her father.
She walked back toward the shore, her footsteps echoing against the ice.
The forge was calling.
