Chapter nine

1275 Words
I woke up later that day and couldn’t stop thinking about the whole Michael-Kumbwa issue. Even though I had convinced myself I had no feelings for Kumbwa, Michael was right! A small part of me still felt attached to him. And if this baby was his, I'd be bonded to him for life. I hated him for what he did to me but part of me felt like I had betrayed him. My relationship with Michael was great so far, one of the best. He had his way of making me happy. Every guy has his own qualities that make a girl happy. I don't want to compare the kind of qualities that Michael and Kumbwa have. Michael has been one of the best guys I have been with, he has shown me nothing but true love and he deserved my absolute loyalty. Martha had prepared dinner for us, Michael was working late so I went down to eat the nice warm food alone. I told her to ask Jack to join us and as we sat at the table, he said a prayer to thank the Lord for the food that we will be eating. I felt wonderful, it was lovely, one day I want to have a huge family of twelve kids, that would inspire me not to give up on love. We finished eating and I helped Martha take the dirty plates to the kitchen. Martha was busy telling me about how she met her husband and how much fun they used to have. They'd go out dancing every friday. That just made me hungry for my own family. I was getting jealous over how she described her romance with her husband. As we were talking I heard a car pull up, I peeped through the window and saw Michael's car parked. In five minutes he walked into the kitchen. I rushed to him and pulled him to me, Martha:"Welcome back." Him: "thank you."He said over my shoulder, "how are you?" He asked while rubbing my cheek. Me: "couldn't be better, " I smiled and he took my arm and led me to his office. I sat down on his chair. Him:" I want us to talk to your parents now, It's time they knew I exist" Me:"as what? Friend?" I asked with my hands tucked in-between my thighs. He smiled and said, "that's your decision, Nikki." He sat on the table opposite me,"tell me what you want and I'll do it." Was he serious? It sounded sweet but who says that. What was he expecting me to tell him? That we should tie the knot? "My mom is Zambian, babe, she won't be happy to hear I am pregnant. And the first thing she'll ask about are your intentions for me." Him: "and that's what I am telling you."He smiled. "Am ready for anything, the final say comes from you. Do you want us to get married?" "To be honest, I'd love to but not now!" I looked up,"I don't want to feel trapped." Him: "you've answered yourself. I haven't talked about marriage because I can tell you aren't ready." He took my hand and kissed it. "The day I'll ask, I expect a yes! So call mum and we'll omit the pregnancy issue until I meet them in person." I dialed mum's number and she picked up on the third ring, Mum:"my baby! How are you? How were exams? You've cleared right? Your dad and ......" Me: "mum!" I cut her off. "One question at a time. Firstly, I am fine and yes exams were fair. How are you doing?" Her:"I'm great, thank you. I've just missed you. Your dad wants you to come over and join us, your siblings are all here, we don't want you to be lonely and we all miss you." Me:"I am afraid that won't be possible, mum. Bonnie is here so I can't be lonely. But that's not why I called you." "Yeah." She answered. Me:"you remember Michael, right? The....." Her: "the one that had your friend thinking of a fairy tale wedding?" She laughed. Me:"yes! We're dating." She was silent for a bit, "you're dating kruger's son? John kruger!" Michael: "the one and only." He said. I heard my mum scream and call dad. "Honey, i'm talking to kruger's son," I heard dad ask which kruger and mum told him the kruger they were meeting for the contract the following week. They exchanged a few words before she came back online and talked to Michael asking him why he hadn't visited them for so long then she wished me luck and hung up. Him:"That went well." Me:"so your dad is in Africa?" That's when he remembered mum's words about the contract. "s**t! I forgot to tell you. He's with the gang." That meant his siblings. That night he convinced me to sleep in his room. ****************************************** I woke up the following morning with a sharp pain in my pelvic region. It hurt so bad I called Martha up because she was an experienced mother and she told me it was normal to experience such pain as the body was expanding to accommodate the baby. She brought me some herbal tea and a pain killer. A few hours later I settled into a troubled sleep and dreamt someone had shot me in the belly. I awoke to find myself covered in sweat and blood. I screamed! Martha came rushing to my room,"What's wrong?" I showed her my bloody hand and she quickly came over to my side, I felt like someone was cutting my waist with a knife. I felt cramps in my lower back and abdomen, It hurt like hell and then I felt something drop from inside. I looked down to find a large clot of blood. "This isn't good," said Martha, "we need to get you to a doctor." I stood there one hand holding my belly and the other in between my legs. She took me to the bathroom to wash myself and helped me with a maternity pad before passing me a robe to cover myself. She and Jack drove me to a private clinic near Mopani Copper mines, I rolled myself into a fetal position on our way to the clinic. She called Michael and briefed him. When we got there the doctor asked me if I'd taken anything to enhance abortion. I looked at him with the "you're stupid!" look. I was told I was having a miscarriage and they had to remove whatever was in my uterus. Michael came a few minutes later and they briefed him. I saw pain written all over his face, he kissed me and said everything would be fine. The doctor stated that I had lost my baby. Since my cervix was not fully open, the doctor said I should have surgery. They took me to a room that smelled of medicine, had forceps and strange instruments. He called it the surgical room. Another doctor came in and told me he was an anesthetic doctor. He asked me if I was allergic to any medicine, how much alcohol I consumed. After the anesthesia, I felt nothing in my lower body. It was all numb I later learnt I'd had a minor surgery known as a D & C where they scrape out the rest of the tissue left behind to help stop the bleeding. They gave me medications to help the uterus contract and some antibiotics to prevent infection. An hour later, I was told I could go home. Michael didn't go back for work but stayed home in bed cuddling me.
