CHAPTER 3

1337 Words
Amber Alpha Nathan had walked away leaving behind Brian behind. When Brian walked towards where we stood, Maria began to cry as we all saw his eyes on her. “Dad, please I don’t want to go with him,” she pleaded. “Please Dad, don’t let him take me” “Beta Brian, we have two daughters you can take the other one” I turned abruptly to stare at Gabriel after his statement. Of course, if it means throwing me into the Lion's den to save his head or that of Maria he was going to do it. I wasn't surprised, it should have crossed my mind earlier that I was the actual one he had in mind to hand over as mate to the Alpha. “You are joking right? You were the one who made the offer to the Alpha, not me!” I exclaimed, losing my cool. He brought the idea, then he should at least be ready to shoulder the consequences. “You should be thanking me for saving your life! If it wasn’t for me your head might be rolling on the ground right, so quit the attitude!” He yelled. “Grateful? For what exactly? I wasn’t the one who asked you to go get a loan. I wasn’t the one who gambled the money away. I wasn’t the one who got the family in trouble, now tell me what I owe you?” My eyes were filled with tears. If Dad was here, if he was still alive all this wouldn’t have been happening. “Watch how you talk to me young lady or else—“ “Or else what? You are going to beat me up like you always do?” At this point I’ve lost my cool, i clenched my fists tightly, restraining myself before I let loose and lose all my anger and annoyance on him. “That’s enough!” Beta Brain yelled. “Beta Brian” Gabriel rose, his eyes lit with new determination as he walked forward. “Tell me, Amber, tell me you don’t know that the Alpha is your mate?” he asked, a gasp escaped my lips as I stared at him in horror. I wanted to keep that to myself, I wanted to keep that my secret. I mean what use was it if my mate couldn’t recognize me? But he just… he just… How did he even know that? “How—“ “—Is that true?” Beta Brian asked before I could complete my sentence. “It’s true.” I whispered, inclining my head to the side in defeat. Beta Brian straightened up, his head raised high as he spoke, “I guess we have found the Alpha’s mate” “Come on,” Brian said as he pulled me behind him. I glanced back to look at my Mom who stood rooted to her position while she cried. A part of me was happy I was finally leaving the house but another part of me was sad and nervous knowing where I was going and who I would be leaving with. Will he treat me right? I wasn’t sure about that though, with the tales I’ve heard, the tales surrounding him, it might as well be the case of out of the frying pan into the fire. Beta Brian opened the door and waited for me to be seated before he shut the door. I glanced at my side and watched Alpha Nathan reading through some documents on his laps. Noticing the cold aura emitting from him, I took my gaze away from him as I decided to focus on the scenery rather than think of my mate who was sitting next to me. I placed my head on the window as we drove past familiar routes and soon we got into another tarred part that was totally unfamiliar to me. I have never been to this part of the town. Although I knew where we headed; to Alpha Nathan’s home. As pack members of Silver Pack, we had a pack house and each house was built next to each other except that of Alpha Nathan which was at the far end of the pack, away from socialization. Soon the car began to slow down as it approached an ornate wrought iron gate and I noticed the illustration of a building behind it which became clearer as we got closer. The car halted to a stop and the door was held open for me by Beta Brian. “Thank you” I whispered in appreciation as I stepped out. My eyes flickered around taking note of the little details of the surroundings. For an Alpha who lived desolated away from human socialization, his house was properly beautified. The architectural and exterior design of the house had a classic yet modern feeling which I felt reflected the personality of the owner of the house. I took a step forward but Beta Brian pulled me back. “When do you intend to inform the Alpha that you are his true mate?” He asked. “I— I don’t know, and I would appreciate it if you let me tell him myself” I said. “And why would I do that? The Alpha deserves to know that you are his mate” Beta Brian disagreed, suddenly he turned towards me. “Are you sure that you are his mate or is this another part of your father’s ploy?” His tone which was light initially became hard as he addressed me. “No, no, it’s not. I swear to the moon goddess I’m telling the truth” I replied instantly. “I just want to be able to get used to this” I waved my hands around. “I am just coming to terms that I have been sold, given as an exchange the same day I found my mate.” “Please, give me time to get used to it then I will inform him myself” I pleaded. I watched as a series of emotions flickered in his eyes. Uncertainty, sadness, pity and then trust all displayed. “Fine, but don’t take too long or I will inform him about it myself” he said and then walked ahead of me, leaving me to catch up with him. Stepping inside, I was greeted by the ambience of the living room which exuded coziness and a sense of relaxation and instantly I felt my shoulders sag, it was like I was home. Where I belonged. “Welcome back, Beta Brian” I snapped my head towards the voice and saw a woman who I assumed must be in her late fifties but considering how we werewolves age slowly, she might as well be older than that. “Thank you, Matilda,” Brian replied. “Matilda, please show Amber the guests room” Brian said. “Of course, come on.” Matilda smiled warmly at me which I responded with my own smile as I followed her. The hallway was bare of pictures, plain and bland and I frowned. Was he really that mysterious that not even a portrait of him or his family stood on the wall? “Here is your room. I would leave you to get settled in, if you need anything please do not hesitate to ask me.” Matilda stopped as we approached a marble door at the end of the hallway. “Thank you Matilda” I said as she turned back while I entered the room. As I sat on the bed, the events of the whole day replayed in my mind like a movie. The realization that I was in the pack house of Alpha Nathan, my true mate, felt like a dream. It was both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. The more I tried to accept him as my true mate, the scarier the tales of his cold and ruthless nature became.
