The Weapon She Could Not Kill

1841 Words
Years came and went. And if anyone had believed that Aura Fox had died years ago, they would have been wrong. Very wrong. The little girl who had once been kidn*pped from the Fox family had grown up inside the Hale residence. She was no longer the frightened child who had woken up in a hospital unable to remember her name. She was Chloe Hale. Veronica Hale's daughter. At least, that was what Chloe believed. And the strange thing was that Veronica had once brought Chloe to the Hale residence with only one intention. Kill her. The plan had been simple. Raise her for a short time. Wait until the right moment. Then destroy the Dragon Rite by destroying its chosen vessel. But Veronica discovered something she never expected. She couldn't do it. --- The night Veronica had planned Chloe's death had arrived years ago. Fredrick stood in a dark room, staring at Veronica. “It's time.” Veronica didn't answer. Fredrick stepped closer. “You said before dawn.” “I know what I said.” “Then we should do it.” Veronica's eyes hardened. “Leave her alone.” Fredrick stared at her. “What?” “I said leave her alone.” “Veronica—” A violent burst of dark magic struck Fredrick in the chest. BOOM! He was thrown backward across the room. He crashed against a wall and dropped to the floor. Fredrick slowly lifted his head. Veronica stood there, breathing heavily. Her eyes were filled with anger. But Fredrick saw something else. Something he hadn't seen before. Fear. Not fear of Chloe. Fear of losing her. Fredrick slowly stood. “You're attached to her.” Veronica said nothing. “You actually love that child.” Veronica's jaw tightened. “She is mine.” Fredrick stared at her. “That wasn't the plan.” “I know.” “You were supposed to kill her.” “I said I know!” The room went silent. Veronica looked toward the hallway. Somewhere beyond it, Chloe was laughing with Cindy. Veronica's expression softened. “She calls me Mum.” Fredrick said nothing. “She trusts me.” A pause. “She loves me.” Fredrick slowly understood. “So you can't kill her.” Veronica turned away. “No.” Then her eyes became cold again. “But that doesn't mean she can't be useful.” Fredrick looked at her. Veronica faced him. “If I cannot destroy the Dragon Rite…” She smiled. “I will control it.” --- The years that followed changed everything. Chloe grew. And so did her powers. Veronica discovered that Chloe's abilities weren't something that could simply be ignored. The Dragon Rite was growing inside her. Every year, Chloe became stronger. Her telekinesis became more precise. Then more powerful. Then terrifying. She could move objects without touching them. Open doors from across rooms. Lift people from the ground. Throw heavy objects through the air. And when the Dragon Rite surged through her... Her eyes could burn with an intense orange glow. Veronica watched every development. She trained Chloe. But she didn't send her to school. Cindy did. Cindy went to school, made friends, studied, returned home, and told Chloe stories about everything she had experienced. Chloe would sit beside her and listen. “What did you learn today?” Cindy would smile. “Something you wouldn't understand.” “Try me.” “Math.” Chloe would groan. “I hate math already.” Cindy laughed. “You've never even studied it.” “I don't need to. I already hate it.” Their bond became stronger every year. They weren't simply sisters because Veronica had told them they were. They genuinely became sisters. They protected each other. They fought together. They laughed together. And Veronica noticed something extremely important. If someone threatened Cindy... Chloe became dangerous. And if someone threatened Chloe... Cindy became dangerous. That gave Veronica an idea. A very dangerous idea. --- One afternoon, Veronica stood inside one of the Hale security facilities. Several armed security personnel stood inside the enormous training room. Cindy was there too. Veronica looked at the guards. “Take her to the lounge.” One of them nodded. “Yes, ma'am.” Cindy frowned. “What are you doing?” Veronica smiled. “Nothing you need to worry about.” The guards escorted Cindy into another section of the facility. They placed cushions across the floor. On the walls. Near the doors. Even around some of the furniture. One guard looked at the others. “Are we seriously putting cushions everywhere?” Another guard sighed. “You know what she does.” The first guard looked nervous. “Yeah.” He glanced toward the door. “I remember.” --- A few minutes later, Chloe entered the room with Veronica. “Where's Cindy?” Veronica looked at her innocently. “I don't know.” Chloe frowned. “You don't know?” Veronica shook her head. Then she pointed toward the security facility. “She is somewhere in there.” Chloe stared at the building. “Why?” “She is in a dangerous place.” Chloe's expression changed. “Dangerous?” Veronica nodded. “You should find her.” That was all Chloe needed. She walked toward the facility. Her expression became serious. The guards inside immediately noticed her approaching. One of them whispered into his radio. “She is coming.” Another guard looked around at the cushions. “Everybody ready?” A third guard swallowed. “No one is ready for this.” Chloe stepped through the doorway. Her eyes slowly turned orange. She stopped. “Give me back my sister.” The guards exchanged nervous looks. One raised his weapon. Chloe took another step. “Where is Cindy?” No answer. Chloe's voice became louder. “Give me back my sister!” The doors suddenly flew open. BANG! A guard was thrown across the room. Then another. WHOOSH! Another man lifted several feet into the air. He screamed as an invisible force carried him backward. Chloe didn't raise a finger. She simply walked. One step. Then another. FLING! A heavily armed security officer slammed into a padded wall. Another was lifted toward the ceiling. Several weapons flew from their hands. Some guards were suspended in the air, completely helpless. The room descended into chaos. “GET HER!” A guard shouted. Another screamed, “Don't shoot!” “Why?” “Because you'll make her angry!” Chloe continued walking. The doors ahead of her suddenly burst open. BOOM! She walked through. Security personnel flew in every direction. Some landed safely on cushions. Others slid across padded floors. The entire facility had practically become a playground for Chloe's telekinetic power. Finally, she reached the lounge. She saw Cindy lying comfortably on the floor with several toys around her. Chloe's expression immediately softened. “Cindy!” Cindy looked up. “Oh!” She smiled. “Chloe!” Chloe rushed toward her. “I found you!” Cindy looked around. “What happened?” Chloe looked behind her. Several security officers were groaning on the floor. She shrugged. “They were playing.” Cindy looked confused. Veronica watched from the doorway. She smiled. She had learned exactly what she needed to know. Chloe would destroy an entire building for Cindy. And Cindy would burn anyone who tried to hurt Chloe. Cindy's blue fire had become stronger because of the magical band Veronica had given her. It wasn't ordinary fire. It was supernatural blue flame. If Fredrick had ever tried to kill Chloe behind Veronica's back, Cindy would have burned him alive before he could get close. Veronica knew it. That was why the two girls were perfect together. They were each other's weakness. And each other's greatest weapon. --- As the years passed, Veronica repeated the training in different ways. Sometimes Cindy was placed in a locked room. Sometimes she was surrounded by armed personnel. Sometimes Veronica simply told Chloe that her sister was in danger. And every time, Chloe came. Every time, the same thing happened. Doors flew open. Security personnel went flying. Weapons were ripped from hands. Walls shook. And Chloe never needed to touch anyone. She only had to walk. “Give me back my sister!” That became the sentence the Hale security personnel feared most. Because when Chloe said it, someone was about to go flying. Veronica watched everything from a distance. She wasn't just raising a daughter anymore. She was building leverage. The Dragon Rite was a weapon of unimaginable destruction. And Veronica knew there was almost nothing Sterling Fox could do against it. If she could control Chloe... She could finally destroy Sterling. --- Meanwhile, Chloe continued growing. Six became seven. Seven became eight. Eight became nine. Then ten. Eleven. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen. Fifteen. And finally— Sixteen. The little girl who had once played with toys on the floor of the Lincoln family home had become a young woman. Her orange hair had grown long. Her abilities had become frighteningly powerful. She was confident, intelligent, protective, and fiercely loyal to the people she loved. Especially Cindy. Cindy was now eighteen. The two sisters were inseparable. Cindy had continued attending school throughout the years. Chloe had not. Veronica had always given the same explanation. “You need to master yourself first.” And Chloe had accepted it. The Dragon Rite, Veronica called it, was a problem. Something Chloe needed to control. Something dangerous. Something that could hurt people if she lost control. Chloe believed her. Until one morning, Veronica walked into Chloe's room. Chloe was standing in front of a mirror, adjusting her clothes. She turned. “Mum?” Veronica smiled. “Are you ready?” “For what?” Veronica stepped into the room. “School.” Chloe froze. “School?” “Yes.” Chloe's face immediately lit up. “Wait…” She smiled. “I'm finally going to school?” Veronica nodded. “You're sixteen now.” Chloe almost jumped. “Really?” “Really.” She rushed toward the door. Then stopped. “Wait! Cindy!” She turned around. “I have to tell her!” Veronica watched her run down the hallway. A faint smile appeared on her face. Sixteen years. Sixteen years of raising the Dragon Rite. Sixteen years of keeping Chloe away from the world. And now the time had finally come. Chloe would leave the Hale estate. She would enter the outside world. She would meet other people. Make friends. Discover things Veronica couldn't completely control. Veronica's smile slowly faded. Because there was one thing she hadn't considered. The more Chloe grew... The harder she would be to control. And somewhere in the world, Chloe's real mother was still alive. Sterling Fox. Still searching. Still waiting. Still unaware that her lost daughter had grown into a sixteen-year-old girl living under the name— Chloe Hale. And the Dragon Rite was now stronger than ever.
