Baby May

In the beautifully lit up garden, their voices could be heard as they chatted and laughed over dinner. It was dark and only their voices could be heard all over the place.
“See, you regained your beauty just after I made you feel good in bed,” he said, looking into her smiling face. She was wearing a white lingerie over black skimpy skirts with her natural black hair falling on the sides of her face.
“ I’ve always been beautiful,” she argued as she picked her meat with a fork.
“Argue with the hands,” he said while showing her his hands and she sneered in his face.
They both laughed and continued eating their food slowly. Just then, she began to feel pains in her waist down to her abdomen and she held her waist tightly.
“Love, are you okay?” He asked as he saw the tight look on her face.
She didn’t respond and he dropped his spoon as he saw her twisting on her seat.
“Love,” he called again.
“Argh,” she winced as the pain became unbearable.
“Love!” He voiced out while standing up abruptly.
He rushed towards her and held her arms.
“Help me up,” she cried and he helped her up slowly.
“What..what’s wrong?” He asked anxiously.
“I..I don’t know. Take me into the house,” she requested.
“Can..can you walk?” He asked.
“I can,” she said and they both walked slowly into the house.
“Should I call the doctor?” He asked as he saw her walking into the bathroom.
She didn’t respond and he heaved a sigh as he stood in front of the bathroom door waiting for her to come out.
“Love!” He heard her scream and he dashed into the bathroom immediately.
“The baby’s coming!” she panicked and he froze.

It was pitch black when they arrived at the hospital and only the hospital lights could be seen reflecting in the yard. He helped her out of the car and led her into the building slowly.
She was taken into the labor room immediately while he stood at the passage waiting for the doctor’s response. He began to pace slowly around the passage while he waited for the doctor to come out of the ward.
He heaved a sigh as he saw the doctor walk out and he rushed towards him immediately.
“How..how is she?” He asked immediately.
“She’s fine, strong and good to go,” the tall lanky middle aged man said with a smile.
He heaved a sigh of relief.
He stood in the dark night staring through space. Despite the coldness of the night, he could feel his body soaked in perspiration.
He was glad that Melisa's Aunt, Mrs. Thambisa, and her daughter, Thandi, came earlier to assist in caring for Melisa.
He reached for his phone and looked at the time. It was 4:15pm already. They’ve been here since 8pm and he needed his wife to deliver safely so he could be relieved of all these anxieties.
He clenched his fists underneath his chin as he exhaled deeply. He shut his eyes and began to pray with his heart racing fast. About a few minutes later, he heard his name being called and he rushed towards the building and saw Mrs Thambisa standing at the hospital’s entrance with the lights shining on her face.
His heart began to race as he saw the middle aged lady staring at him from the entrance. Her face broke into a smile and she made a nod. He became dumbfounded for a while and then he dashed into the building as she ran back inside.
He rushed into the passage and he could see her standing with a nurse in front of the labor room. He couldn’t hear Melisa’s screams any longer and he didn't know whether to be afraid or not.
“Nurse..nurse..my wife?” He inquired as he rushed towards the women.
He could see the women smiling at him and his heartbeat decreased. Just then, he heard a baby’s cry and his eyes shut for a moment and his knees crumbled to the floor immediately.
“It’s a girl, Daren,” he heard Mrs Thambisa’s voice.
“Oh, my God!” He exclaimed and burst into tears immediately.
“You can come in to see her,” the nurse said.
He stood up from the floor immediately and rushed into the room. He stopped for a moment as he heard the baby’s loud cry and his eyes fell on Melisa who was lying on the bed, sweating profusely. Her face broke into a smile as she saw him and he couldn’t control his emotions any longer.
He dashed to the hospital bed and knelt beside her and she reached out her hand to him. She nodded with a smile and he kissed her hand tenderly.
“Daren, come over here to see your baby,” he heard Mrs Thambisa’s voice and he wiped his tears immediately.
He could see the nurses dressing up the baby with Mrs Thambisa standing behind them. She was handed over the baby and she smiled as she looked ahead and saw Daren walking slowly towards her.
“Coko..your daddy’s here,” she said with a warm smile.
He heaved a sigh as he saw the baby wrapped beautifully in Mrs Thambisa’s arms. He wiped the tears dripping down his face as she handed the baby over to him. He felt a sudden feeling of relief as he held the baby in his arms and looked into her gentle innocent face. Her white round eyes looked into his and his heart skipped as he gazed at her beautiful face.
“Because of you, I became a father. And today, I became a proud man and a proud father. My little angel, your name will be called, May. Because in the month of may, you were conceived. The month of may has brought us something good and for this reason, I’m naming you, May. Welcome to the world, my baby, May,” he said emotionally and there was a spontaneous round of applause from everyone in the room.
